*cough* Having gotten that out of my system, on to the wank.

Jahanx, judging by his/her quote, is not a fan of Sparta.

I'm not seeing the Sparta=Nazi Germany connection here. Not that I'm seeing indications that Sparta was good, either. Based on what my pretty little book here says, I'd say Sparta was kinda of a jerk of a place that kept mostly to itself.

If you're saying that Greeks cheering on Spartans would be like Germans cheering on Nazis, then yes, you're actually drawing a parallel between Spartans and Nazis.

As someone of Spartan descent, I think I'd get wanky if I went on, so I'll stop there ^.^

There's a huge difference. Modern Greeks saying "Woohoo Spartans!" would be like modern Germans saying "Woohoo Nazis!" Either one would be icky. It does not imply that Spartans were like Nazis, though.

You know, I got an 800 Verbal on the SAT, which theoretically means I'm supposed to be good at these "apples are to oranges as spartans are to nazis" sorts of deals and the violet_tigress1 thread has still given me a headache trying to figure out what the hell she is attempting to say. Does she make sense to anyone else? If so, please explain!

I'm still waiting for someone to point it out more clearly than using the word 'modern' in italics.

Sure, you can point that out and say it's not the same comparison, but will you go the extra mile and point out that at the time of the Nazi regime, the things they did were considered heinous, but at the time of the Spartans, the things they did were innovative and kind of to be expected, war-wise?

Ah, 300. The movie I watched without glasses or sound, at 2 am with a dude I had just met (hurrah for Kung Fu club bonding parties).

How anyone can manage to take that thing seriously long enough to wank over it makes my mind boggle.

Then again, I have a friend who seriously cannot understand how I could come away from that movie and not think the Spartans were The Coolest Thing EVAH!11!!, so I guess it's possible for people to take just about anything seriously.
