I always thought his was kinda wanky, re: X-Files.
This disclaimer has been up for years on Jamie's X-Files site:

Disclaimer: Everything contained on this site and the following pages are property of Jamie and The X-Cellent X-Files X-Perience. Everything contained within is for private, noncommercial use only. Any other use including, but not limited to, using on other home pages is also strickly prohibited, unless you have permission from me. (In which case, I will be inclined to say yes, if it is for linking purposes only and they are not my self made images, but you MUST get permission, and you MUST follow my restrictions) If they are certain images that I either made, scanned, or snappied, they are my property and may not be used. For your own personalized image for FREE, see the instructions here. These rules apply to ALL pages and images on this site.

Wasn't the big outcry from webmasters over FOX shutting down their sites about the question of intellectual property, which included snapshots and images? FOX bullied sites that had snaps (and sounds) up, telling them that the snaps were property of FOX, not the webmaster.

*shrugs*

*steals her snaps for his own purposes*

Edit: Bah, I found a better site with DVD snaps anyway. *steals them instead*

*shrug* I don't think this is wanky, except in the way she states it. This page is from the mid-to-late nineties (before the FOX men in black kerfuffle), when capturing equipment was rare, expensive, tied up your computer for hours at a stretch, and probably crashed it six times in a session. Many if not most sites said, hey, don't lift my stuff wholesale, and they didn't mean it in any strict legal intellectual property sense - they meant it in a fannish give-and-take sense. I think she's a bit heavy-handed in her wording, and she should have changed it to something more circumspect when the landscape changed around Season 7, but it's not wanky.

The FOX Nazi crap started well before what you're implying (probably in reference to the whole Buffy and HP thing). Cease & desist letters were already being sent to Millennium, X-Files, Simpsons, and King of the Hill site owners starting in 1996, hence the beginning of that "Free Speech on the Web" campaign. Screencap equipment wasn't THAT expensive around 1998 (I got my Snappy for $50).

Doesn't matter anyway, because that other site I found has a much less wanky disclaimer that read that the snaps on their site aren't their property and that "no copyright infringement is intended". I.e., we're ripping the prop of FOX, so go ahead and rip/make art/backgrounds/banners/whatever.

You missed "strickly." ;) And yes, I see the general disclaimer wank. "I can steal anything I want BUT DON'T STEAL FROM ME WAAAAUGH." I especially enjoy ones who are under the delusion that scanning or screencapping something means it belongs to them somehow.

Bah, I wasn't even paying attention to that part (just wanted to get me snaps), but yeah, "strickly"'s pretty funny. I just slapped it up there because it's the same damned disclaimer that chick's had up there for at least 5 years.

Her snaps suck now though because the DVDs are out and one of the Fredfarm sites has a buttload of high-quality screenshots...ripe for thievery. I needed some to make a background and icons for mine and Sissybunny's new X-Files drabble adventure.
