You've got lyrics that have got me cringin', you're like a fish-wife, quit your damn whingin'...
It may not be as scandalous as the ACen hullabaloo but hopefully it'll still be wanky enough to provide a few laughs. Sorry if it's long, kinda hard to explain sometimes...

The Beastie Boys are set to release a new album this summer, The Mix Up, their seventh studio album. It's been three years since their last as they take a notoriously long time between albums (the longest being six years) so naturally, the fans are excited.

Word got out recently that the album is, in fact, going to be completely instrumental, no hip hop tracks, no rapping, no screaming or serenading, no lyrics or vocals to be seen or heard of at all. Most (sane) fans don't have much of a problem with this, since the Beastie Boys have proven themselves proficient in the area of instrumental tracks before, but, well...

Over at the Official Beastie Boys Message Board the fans seem to have divided into two factions: those who are fine with an all-instrumental album, and those who are gritting their teeth over it. There are also those who, despite multiple press releases and information sources providing the contrary, insist there must, must be lyrics on the album and that it's all an elaborate joke by the Boys.

At first, people take the news well, many are even excited at the prospect of a full instrumental album that's promised to be unlike their previous instrumental tracks.

Some are not so pleased, however, especially user BeastieAlbum07, who cannot accept the fact that there will be no lyrics. In several threads in the forum (honestly too many to pick from) they've gone around hoping for lyrics or vocals in some way to outright saying there will be vocals, damnit, even if the Boys have to scramble to add them at the last minute due to a fandom outcry!

It's easy to find (there are so many threads, Christ) and there's outright denial, minor kerfuffles, accusations of not being one of the "true fans," accusations of sockpuppetry, BNF-hating, "Don't they know they're going to lose SO MANY FANS", accusing informants of being fake, OMG SPOILER, deliberating over whether the album cover that's been shown is real or not (it is), etc. You name it. And the speculating... oh god, the speculating.

"Enough is enough!":

J-BAN: I rarely post on this board but I read it everyday! I am tired of people complaining about the new album being instrumental.

The In Sound From Way Out! was instrumental and one of my favorite records to date! The Beastie Boys are diverse, always have been and I have been waiting (like many other fans) for another instrumental record to be released.

If you are not a fan of their instrumental work, that's fine but don't dis their work because you are upset at their choices!

If you want to hear hip-hop listen to their other releases, or take in some of their shows over the summer but please, please stop tearing into this record, without a doubt it will be great!

Peace!

JasonP: You only have 15 posts so your opinion doesn't count. But if it did, I would agree with you completely.

J-BAN: I can understand criticizing it after it's released but to do it beforehand is ignorant.

These threads will be documented, so if those that 'shudder' at this album comeback after the release loving it, there will be hell to pay! j/k

cjhood: its an instrumental record.....whats to love........"oh snap, did you hear that organ.....its awesome"......

as opposed to "i'm on your mind, its hard to forget me/i'll take your pride for a ride if you let me" is an incredible rhyme......

Brother McDuff: you pretty much said it. some poeple love organs, some love rhymes, some love guitars, some love singing, some love drums, some love drum machines. but some love it all. this statement kind of offends those of us that really do say things like "oh snap, did you hear that organ, its awesome".

"the next new album will have vocals":

Michelle*s Farm: Let' presume this album has no vocals.

The odds are that the next LP in 2010 will be have em. So no need to fret.

Lyman Zerga: you mean when they are still alive then

The Padster: In 2010 the boys will be nearly 50... if there's no vocals on this record then we can pretty much wave goodbye to ever hearing any hip-hop from the boys again.

BeastieAlbum07: Agree.

What a shame...

They could be the first 50 Year-olds to have a platinum hip-hop album.

I bet Ad-Rock would want one...

"you are all in denial":

DeeJayZap: OMFG THERE'LL BE NO LYRICS!!

deal with it.

RaZoRbLaDeKiSs: I hope that the Bboys are happy knowing that the anticipation they are causing is making everyone create all these god damn threads that are making me want to slowley kill myself.

Lo_Lyfe: [...] Zap, people can do what they want. I won't tell you to shut it, no matter how bad I want to.

SOME PEOPLE ARE DISAPPOINTED. DEAL WITH IT

cypressphil: [...] maybe Yauch & co are sitting back havin' a laugh about all this speculating. Patience is a virtue, wait & you will be rewarded. The way everyones goin' you'll all be in therapy with stress.

Its a music album, not some mysterious conundrum that Columbo is gonna solve with the Enigma machine!

"Immense Dissapointment... Probable Instrumental Album":

BeastieAlbum07: Maybe it is a "Mix Up" just to trick the fans.

ggirlballa: get over it man

Lo_Lyfe: Yeah we've figured out you're an alias. Probably belonging to the 'Better Fans'.

Fuck off.

BeastieAlbum07: I may be an alias, but what is "Better Fans"?

Lo_Lyfe: Yeah cool. I know who you are.

BeastieAlbum07: I WILL NOT GET OVER IT. What a waste of immense lyrical talent.

---

JohnnyChavello: If that leaked song is real and the info on Mic to Mic is legit - I hate to say it, but immense disappointment is somewhat of an understatement. I know there are a lot of teenagers in here who think In Sounds From Way Out was an album, and who think everything they touch will turn to gold - I used to think so, too - but fuck! Are they a fucking lounge act now?

I'll try to restrain myself, wait, and listen with an open mind, but I have a bad feeling about this.

BeastieAlbum07: The drum machine rocks, literally. Screw instruments.

Darko: I still have doubts about this because if there was anyone who would fake a massive hoax about the album being all instrumental, it's the Beastie Boys. But you never know, it could be true.

"new album has lyrics":

beastmasterflex: people who think this is instrumental also think they record in a submarine or have a disguise room at oscilloscope. they will play instuments but they will sing dance and rap over the instruments. this is a major release...not like the insound from way out.....beasties and their record company are not total idiots. this record is gonna be big.

Mr Films: oh good we can finally close the book on this debate ... pffffth

TommyD: come on - deal with it - IT'S AN INSTRUMENTAL (YES, ONLY INSTRUMENTS) ALBUM. I think there is enough signs that point to this (ie. mic-to-mic info, Mike D's "effortless" and "jazz oddysey" quotes, instrumental tours happening, etc.) That's not such a bad thing considering EVERY Beastie Boys album is:

1) Guaranteed Fresh EVERY time
2) Fucking wicked
3) A different style, all of which will slice your head off.

Hip-hop is shit anyways, these days, people need to be subjected to the phatness that is jazz. Especially their bass-laden, rhythm jazz.

Brother McDuff: funny how a handful of people are so positively sure that it's not instrumental. they really need to come to grips with this, cause they're only going to look like jerks when the official official word finally drops.

RaZoRbLaDeKiSs: Ugh god damnit, I hope this is the last 'NEW ALBUM!!' thread unless its posted by Minton, TKP, or fucking Yauch himself. This is so annoying, and it just makes me angry. We will know if its gonna be an instrumental or not when the damn album is released, if it is then it is, if you dont like it, dont freaking buy it. Simple as that. The bboys will make millions still without someone buying ONE of thier damn records. This is shananagans and I dont wanna hear another damn thing about it.

beastie_I_Be: Yes the new album will be instrumental...instrumental in securing their legacy as the greatest hip-hop band of all time! The people who are assuming that instrumental means no vocals are wrong. That is "The Mix Up".

"i still say the new album has lyrics!!":

beastmasterflex: sure there might be some instrumentals, but the new album WILL have lyrics......i'm taking wagers

mikizee: Does Iraq still have WMDs too?

"Check Out the Camera":

RaZoRbLaDeKiSs: Ah i know! But I dont think it should be this big of a deal! I just really dont think people should be spilling facts/info about the sound of the CD. I dont want to be listening to it and think "Oh yeah, i remember hearing someone saying something about this part." I want to listen to it and think "DAMN! this is increadible!" I really think thier ruining it. People should learn to include "WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS" or something like that. Its like waiting to see a movie for a year and then going to a site and finding out what happens at the end. Its tom foolery!

Finally, the voice of reason. Er.

acamus: Attention all planets of the Solar Federation. We have assumed control. We got the, we got the funk and the control. Set them for the sun, Emily. See spot run. Roast dumplings and kasva, man. Wash dat shit down wid a sorell. Batty!

Yeah, I don't know either.

It's still going as we speak and will probably keep going 'til the album drops in July. I look forward to the fallout after its release... send out a search party if I don't come back a week after July 10th.

If this is too long lemme know and I'll cut it down a little. So much crazy...

Edit: This exchange was too classic for me to pass up (Sub-edit: now with extra Godwin's!):

mate_spawn_die: i'm a huge beastie fan but.....

i just wanted to say that. TT5B had the most terrible rhymes and flow of any beastie boy album. the lyrics just plain sucked. so i'm very excited about new album. there ya go.

...in fact, almost everything sucked about TT5B it seemed rushed and was very bland. biggest disappointment ever. im glad i got that off my chest. sorry beasties but its my opinion. i still love you.

Pootytang: It took 2 years to come up with that? That is the shittiest first post I think I've ever read on this message board.

edit: My bad... 3 years

The Padster: What is shitty about it? The fact that his opinions don't correlate with yours?

Nice fascist logic you got there, Hitler.

Okay....I guess I'm just not 'with it' enough for you crazy kids, but I can't figure out which of those words means bad and which means good. I need a dictionary, or something.

In an attempt to shorten the waiting period for the loyal fans and in order to avoid ballooning production costs, the decision was made to release the songs on this album instrumental.

Later on there might be a lyrics patch though.

Still, it's amusing; do they actually think whining on the internet is going to make the band go, "Oh, HELL NO, now we HAVE to put lyrics in?"
