Spider-Wank: Mary Jane, Domestic Goddess
Rosie the Riveter must be in tears over this one, and it's obviously set back feminism 30 years. Apparently the boys at Sideshow Collectibles have produced a very very popular maquette of Mary Jane doing what any modern girl would do for her super hero man...wash his costume. In a thong, pearls, and low cut shirt. Not exactly a thrill to me admittedly, but ZOMG people, it's the fall of civilization!


At any rate, Here's the thread, plus pictures of the maquette in question.

Because you know, there's no sexism in the comics industry!

I was wondering if this would pop up. I'm waiting for a dissenting opinion though. Everybody seems to agree that it's horrid. Other than a few guys dehydrating from drool on the Sideshow forums, everyone's on the same page.

Though, the Girl-Wonder forums did add a few interesting new words to my vocabulary. Cockwaffle, buttpizza, nipplesteak.

Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. How is this different from all the other maquettes or statues or whatever that the comic book stores carry? They're all built in that unrealistic fashion, and a lot of 'em, particularly the anime characters, are wearing WAY less. Granted, I don't think many of them are wearing a *snickers cos she's 12* pearl necklace.
I think it's cute. Especially the kinda coy look on her face, like Pete's just walked through the door and is making silly "Guh" noises.

I'm more bothered that the figure's legs seem longer than is humanly possible. Ack. (The print it was based on had some sense of proportion, at least, and MJ looked like she'd eaten in the last week.)

There's also this post from [info]devildoll, who linked to a thread at Sideshow's forums. Apparently someone was deleting the negative comments they were getting.

I saw some commentary on this on my friends list yesterday, and the basic conclusion was "Comic people, you say you want more girl readers, but the things you're actually producing don't support that argument."

I'm not really getting the whole "And she's even BAREFOOT" thing. I mean, yeah, there's that whole thing about being barefoot and pregnant but honestly, I do laundry in bare feet. I wash the floors in bare feet. I just like having bare feet. I was not aware that I was demeaning myself through my lack of footwear. :(

But damn, that thing is all sorts of fugly.

I think the real problem here is that it's a crappy piece of plastic that just takes up shelf space and doesn't even do anything like an action figure or real toy. It's a useless piece of garbage even before getting into the "ANYONE WHO OWNS THIS WILL NEVER KNOW THE TOUCH OF A LIVE HUMAN WOMAN" aspects.

My biggest problem is the anatomy and the "where the hell is her center of balance?" I actually tried standing in that exact position, complete with the slight arch of the back. Couldn't do it without falling over unless I was leaning on something.

We were looking at this at work (I work with some fun people) and the general reaction from my cubemate chicks was hysterical laughter. Mostly because of the absolutely ludicrous posture of the figurine and how it's not actually possible to stand like that without causing severe pain, especially with THOSE proportions. And the thong. The thong got a lot of hilarity.

Then we got into a discussion of the potential sales value of "Precious Porn Moments" figurines and how EVERY mom would want one for Mother's Day.
