WANK OF THE TITANS?
Or, Indie Comics Rumble: Round One.

Harlan Ellison is suing Gary Groth's Fantagraphics. Something about TCJ being snotty or just first amendment hate. I'm not sure.

Gary hits Shannon Wheeler (creator of Too Much Coffee Man) up for some cash to help the cause.

Shannon does his best Janet Jackson impression and asks "What have you done for me lately? Oooooh yeah!"

Things get cross-posted over to THE BEAT ( When Gary Met Shannon) from Shannon's LJ.

I got out of work not too long ago, which means my brain is dead and I can't figure out how to link comments directly, but oh boy. Gary is in there, with Shannon and Harlan with assorted guest appearances by other big indie comic names. There are insults, wrongly interrogated text, and challenges to settle things in a fistfight. An honest to God fistfight.

This all happened about a week or two ago, but I couldn't NOT post this.

I love the opening paragraph of that legal document. "Harlan Ellison, all around really great guy (who's FAMOUS btw), is suing this

uppity ungrateful lowlife."

(Random paragraph break [sic].)

Christ, that's a big pile of tl;dr. I think I'm still scarred by the part where HARLAN ELLISON told us about his vasectomy while offering to bear Wheeler's baby two-headed calf. Thanks, HARLAN ELLISON, for letting us know you got snipped. The status of your 73 year old dangly bits is, of course, vital to every conversation, HARLAN ELLISON.

Also, thanks for being the only one whose name was in all-caps, so none of us would miss out on any of your words of wisdom.

From the lawsuit:

Groth has gone too far in his obsession and, even though Ellison has better things to do, he elects by this action finally to prosecute Groth’s defamation

Heh. Yup, he's way too busy fighting it out on the internet.

Any time Harlan Ellison refers to Heidi, I wonder what Heidi from HP fandom has to do with anything.

Was Ellison's run-in with the Penny Arcade guys ever wanked?

This action arises from a well-intentioned attempt on Ellison’s part, over twenty five years ago, to magnamously assist a then-struggling writer with his own career, defendant Gary Groth. Unfortunately, Groth revealed himself to be a scheming pathological liar and little more than an obsessively vindictive and petty man trying to be a mover and shaker. The phrase “no deed goes unpunished” speaks volumes in this instance.

Something tells me that Harlan, and not his lawyer, drafted this document.

I also adored the description of Fantagraphics as "a tiny but hostile publishing outfit." AWESOME! No wonder this guy is famous!

The interview was characteristically candid, and Ellison provided Groth with a long, controversial and gripping piece.

Is this a lawsuit or a book promo?

In most regards Groth has been cowardly about his “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” routine with Ellison, and Ellison has tried simply to avoid the distaste of Groth’s infantile vendetta.

Calling Groth a girl? Burn! He's gonna cry himself to sleep tonight!

Groth has systematically, obsessively and repeatedly traduced Ellison’s character, achievement, motivation and notable perception by a general readership.

To my surprise, that actually IS a word. Now I can't wait to use it.

I kind of want to print out that lawsuit and hang it on my wall. It is a masterwork. Ellison couldn't have crafted a better opening shot in a wankwar if he tri- oh, right.

The comicwank is also a thing of beauty. Everyone is equally belligerant and condescending! Oh comics, never change, please.

Wow. I definitely recommend reading the entire lawsuit, as it just keeps getting better and better as you go along. I can't decide whether my favorite part is the litany of Ellison's virtues in the opening, the "Enemies of Ellison": a "hate group" "operated primarily to vex and harass Harlan Ellison, and to cause him extreme financial and reputational damage" or the fact that their most recent campaign against his repeutation involved the most grievous insult known to Man: “Famous Comics Dilettante.”

This whole thing is COMEDY GOLD. I love seeing adult men acting like 8-year-olds. "I know you are but what am I?" "I'm rubber and you're glue!"

I still dig Fantagraphics (hey, any company that publishes Los Bros Hernandez, Jim Woodring, Dan Clowes, and Peter Bagge can't be all bad) and Harlan Ellison is lolarious. Maybe they can all have a cage match or something. My money's on Shannon Wheeler.

I must admit I imangined HARLAN ELLISON making dramatic poses and facial expressions like a bad soap actor while reading his ode to the malice and savagery that is small print publishing.

ex.1

Fantagraphics is a tiny but hostile publishing outfit which both men, Groth and Thompson, run out of their shared home in Seattle

Definitely said with a shaking hand held like a claw. He may have also pulled his cape to eye level (if he has one, I think he does.)

Ex.2
This is a grotesque and ludicrous fabrication, a florid lie. Groth creates from whole-cloth paranoid fantasies about imagined Ellison misconduct in the case.

Yes only over exaggerated sobbing could heighten the sense of betrayal and entrapment of that statment.

The law suit fails at the start.

The phrase “no deed goes unpunished” speaks volumes in this instance.

Urmm! So helping little old ladies with carrying their shopping will be punished?

I will now have to be a bad person because:
The reward is the same as the punishment,
It’s more fun being bad,
I can sue people for being nice to me.

Give me a break. I just wrote and produced an opera. The first opera based on a comic book and you did zilch reporting.

I'm sure he meant that to seem like "damn bitches don't respect my work!" but as soon as my eyes hit 'opera', I couldn't help but read it as "I wrote an opera, that's seriously serious stuff. No laughing, take me seriously!"

*runs around yelling "I wrote an opera, bitch!"*
