Blizzard is like Hitler!!1!one!
Blizzard decided, a while back, that it was time for a worldwide World of Warcraft championship, 5v5 arena style.  And lo, there were high-ranked teams, of which "Pandemic" was one. They were going to be going in with two healers (Nathan 'Kintt' Quinn and Jared 'Vhell' Coulston) (...it is me, or does that style of name-referencing seem ridiculous?), because ... well, tht's just how they roll.

But then, a complication!  Blizzard decided to check to make sure that each player's listed name matched the name on the account.  Why, you ask?  Well, the Terms of Service do state that the names have to match.*  And lo!  People on 5 of the 8 qualifying teams  got disqualified, including the above-listed Kintt and Vhell.  And lo, Blizzard disqualified those players from the tournament.

Amped runs an article including an interview with the famed Kintt: ]In order to practice, you have to put in such a huge amount of time commitment before you can even begin, and when people kinda take short cut to get to that point (buy/borrow an account) they can't even participate in one of the bigger tournaments.

Sadly, I can't find a way to link to specific comments (help?).  Comments range from "You break the rules then you cry about not being able to play when you get caught. Sounds like a bunch of cry baby cheaters to me" to "I feel as though I've been stabbed in the back, and I'm not even a member of one of the teams."  Justification stems from "it's just arena!" ("you dont share accounts then automatically win, just because some person doesn't want to level the grind again from 1-60 doesn't mean they're exactly cheating in WoW Arena to win."), and tjr2mental decides to take on the whole lot of them.  With varying results.

Over on the WoW forums, things are going about in the same way, only with the addition levity ("Damn you, now I want Dairy Queen."), the incomprehensible ("cause they thing they be special but really they be sad special short bus. get a job hippies"), and conspiracy theories ("For all you know, GMs could be sending them free gold/consumables/mats every week so they can continue to stay on top of the raiding progress charts.") here and here

I knew about cyber-gaming, but this is way wankier than I expected.  Cyber-athletics are srs bizness!

*A friend, upon retiring, cannot give you his or her account.  Buying accounts on Ebay is right out.  A switch of name can only go through between two family members, and it is usually only acceptable if it is a parent-child thing (for a minor, the billing would go to a parent's credit card).  Furthermore, all of these people had to be above 18, so that a switch most likely should have been made already. When I put this in an lj cut, it apparently killed the formatting and links, so they aren't embedded anymore. Sorry. o.O

Additionally? This may be wanky, but quite frankly, you bought the game to play. Why would you decided to *not* play it to achieve a goal? Really?

I'm kind of on that side, too.

I gather that the stuff you can do as a low-level character isn't really as fun, though. I guess that would explain why someone would want to skip ahead.

(Although really, a game should be fun at all levels....)

I think it's more a matter of low-level characters not being as much of a status symbol, or the fact that it's harder for low-level characters to find groups with which to mindlessly clear the same dungeon of monsters hour after hour.

I actually think the game is a lot of fun at low levels. But then, I *enjoy* the leveling aspect.

You mean people get together...in person...to play an online game that requires people to sit on their asses until they develop bedsores? What's next, a Second Life con where all attendees receive a platinum-plated novelty penis extender as part of their $2,876,348.49 admission fee?

Or is this WoW LARP? WoW LARP would be hilarious.

There is another side here, which is that a lot of people don't even know that transferring an account to another name is possible (I certainly didn't, and I had tried to look into the matter). Plus, it's impossible to transfer characters between accounts unless they share the same name on the account. All of this means that if you start off sharing an account, when you both get your own one of you has an account that's not in your name, even though all the characters on it are yours and you did all the leveling work. So getting screwed on something like this hurts, since you've put a lot of time and effort into the characters.

(As to why someone would hate leveling, my warrior was 5 levels from cap and I just couldn't take it any more. It took her literally a minute to kill any monster and I had spent nearly half a year leveling her. When quests read "go kill 30 of this monster type," (and there are 6 of those quests...damn you Nessingwary) that makes you want to shoot yourself. In the end, I didn't cheat, but I did get my boyfriend to party his mage with me to up my kill speed.)

That said, these guys are talking about buying characters, or getting chars power leveled, which is a whole 'nother animal. That is lame, and it is cheating, and I can't understand playing the game and not doing the work yourself.

Well, in that case, they're still breaking the TOS by sharing an account.

Kill quests I don't mind so much (since I duo with my husband). It's the freakin' drop rate quests that drive me nuts.

But yeah, this is just nuts. I'm glad I don't do arenas/BGs/PVP...

Blizzard has long since screwed the teams that actually worked hard for that stuff by requiring that all members of a team be from the USA even if though of the team qualified for the arena.

So, for 5v5, you can have 10 people on the team, because after all, not everyone can be online all the time. Their rules stated that if your team had 5 qualifying members (played X number of games a week, has a non suspended/banned account, lives in the US, etc), those 5 qualifying members would get e-mails saying they were in the tournament. The top 3 arena teams in each realm, iirc, are qualifiers. There has been a huge thread calling out Blizzard for the past month and a half, started by a few members of the #2 and #3 teams from the same realm whose teams that got e-mails were the #1, #4, and #5 teams. Blizzard comes back and says 'oh, but ALL your members have to be qualified!! sry!!' So essentially because Blizz either changed their rules or lied, they could have been in the tournament had they only kicked out the unqualifying members before the cut-off date.

Oh, and to further the mystery, the #4 and #5 teams from that realm had sponsors. Anyway, I'm not surprised they have made a complete and utter mess of this, because it's been a mess from the beginning. Those people probably should have been told they weren't eligible BEFORE the tournament.

Cry more,
It is stated VERY clearly that selling or buying an account from someone else is a nono. Besides when you buy an account with a character not played by you, it is highly frowned upon by most.

Hell I kicked two of those fuckers out of a raiding guild for that..
