FanLib
Once upon a time, there was a film producer, an internet whiz and a CEO.
Together they invested three million and created Fanlib, a multi-fandom archive for fanfiction. The plan was to make money of these fics and somehow "build a bridge between fandom and corporations" or something like that.

They started by spamming inviting a select few authors. Most invited authors either ignore the entire thing (probably because the invitation mail sounds like an offer for a seedy credit card) or got upset.

Then fandom, at least the Lj part, kinda explodes as the fanfic authors gather to blog about how and why they dislike Fanlib.

But oh! This hurts the feelings of the Fanlib CEO. And the real wanking starts...

I'm Chris one of the founders of FanLib> it's really late and i have been working on the site all day. I'm exhausted but i just realized what was going on here and all of the commentsts are making me sick.

i care deeply about what you think but this is crazy. we're good people here and you make us sound like we're an evil corporation or the govt. sending your kids to war or something.

Aw. Poor baby.

Icarusancalion has a pretty good summary of the entire story so far. Also, stewardess has gathered a bunch of links but the wank is spread all over lj and beyond.

Special highlights include feminism, is-fanfic-illegal-or-not? disucssions and of course the Fanlib people trying to defend their company.

I especially like how, a bit down in this thread, jdsampson who works for Fanlib, tries to avoid answering questions by dissing ff.net
chicgeekchick : The question is how do YOU get paid. Who signs your paycheck and where does THAT money come from? Where does the money to pay the webmaster and the server comes from? The ads? The sponsors? Do you run this place at a loss? Or do you gain something? If so, how?

jdsampson : Fanlib is a company - Fanlib.com is not the only thing they run. We have been running fan events online for several years, we are currently running huge promotion called IntheMotherHood.com with spring, MSN, The Ellen Show and we're working on an event for one of the biggest media brands around which will be unvieled shortly. Those events pay the bills. And what also amazes me about the question is why does no one ask it of Fanfic.net. Do you have any idea how much money they really make.

It's much more than it takes to run the servers.

ETA: The whole mess has inspired the creation of a new, fanrun multi-fandom archive. Of course this suggestion also creates some wank.

For some reason they seem to think fanfic authors are stupid docile cash cows. When those cows prove to have teeth, those poor folks get their widdle feelings hurt. Somebody underestimated the dark side of fandom. They might want to invest in some tougher skin if they want to play in our sandbox and make money from our sandcastles. Someone's gonna end up with sand in their vagina eyes and I don't think it's going to be fandom.

I'm seriously surprised how long this has taken to end up here. I don't think I've ever seen fandoms so unified in anything before. I'd furiously type some more about this but I so totally have to go study for a test.

Don't you just love it when some business hack with no experience in fandom tries to blunder into the community and make money off it? Hi-larious.

I agree with what a lot of people are saying: no way is he going to get any established fanfic authors or anyone actually involved in fandom to use his site. Just noobs with no previous experience wandering onto the internet and going, "Fan . . . fic? Why, what a splendiferous concept! Gosh, these people are smart for thinking of it!"

I also look forward to how, during this proposed bridge-building between fans and companies, these oh-so-savvy businessmen are going to deal with the pr0n. Synergy is all well and good until someone stumbles upon that Shrek/Gandalf/Harry Potter threesome BDSM fic and has an aneurysm.

You'd think Mr. CEO would know how to use the shift key at least. Nothing says professional like a note that makes you sound like a teenage fanthing on a message board. Considering the tone of his post, I find myself wondering how long it'll be until he leaves fandom FOREVAH because everyone's so MEEAN.

A friend of mine who writes both het and slash (but mostly het these days) got the invitation back in March. She remarked that no one who writes primarily slash seemed to have been invited, though that may have changed in the last two months.

She also contacted them for clarification, and aside from "we want to make this the best fic site EVAH!" she couldn't get a straight answer from them on anything.

If I remember correctly, someone also mentioned that there were fandoms listed for which the creators had previously squashed fic writing. Which makes me wonder what Anne Rice would say about all of this.

because lists are so nice

a) The site is fugly beyond belief.
b) There is little to no actual fan support for this endeavor and no one I know is posting their fanfiction there.
c) Without decent authors (see b above) they will never get any readership whatsoever.

Conclusion: FAIL

I can't believe someone paid three million freaking dollars to get that piece of shit up and running. It's going to be the next incarnation of ff.net, a place to go dumpster-diving for readable badfic when your favorite authors are on vacation or whatever.

And it's very very funny that these people don't seem to have any actual knowledge of fandom. They have clearly never lived through the Buffy Inquisition, or the Ray Wars, or Ginmar. Oooh. Wonder if we could set Ginmar on them? That might actually be a really good use of her, erm. talents?

(also, I got an invite very late...wonder if that's because I write slash? They don't even have "slash" listed as a search option on the navigation menu...nice, guys. Very welcoming. Bleh.)

Odd question as a Fanfic archive founder
[info]anarchicq
2007-05-21 08:38 pm UTC (link)
Ok, here's a question:
I own a fandom archive. I have google ads on said archive (With hopes of getting enough revenue for a .com).
FanLib has come across on my Adbox. I don't want to give Fanlib Anything Ever.
So should I just remove the googleAds?
Or am I just being petty?
