Like shooting huge fish in tiny barrels
A little bit of back story, The Frenz Of The Enz forums have always been known within Finn Brothers/Crowded House/Neil Finn/Tim Finn/Split Enz fandom for being wanky, to the point that many fans myself included rarely post there. Crowded House are an antipodean (assigning them a nationality only leads to more wank) pop band that initially existed from 1985-1996. Long story short, the band were immensely popular in the antipodes and were at various stages immensely popular in the rest of the world, the band broke up, Neil Finn went on to a solo career and Paul Hester, their former drummer committed suicide in 2005.

In January of this year Neil Finn announces that he is reforming the band with a new drummer, they will be releasing a new album and going on a world tour through the latter half of 2007. This, at the time led to surprisingly little wank.

Flash forward to mid-June 2007 and the album, which is due for release in late June-Mid July depending on your region is leaked on the internet.

The first member of Frenz, mac to get their hand on it posts this gem.

Well,I hate saying this but.......Ive been listening to TOE for three days now and honestly dont like any of it.It bothers me because Ive NEVER felt that way about ANY of crowded house's work.

Eight pages and counting of wank ensues.

Serial wanker John/WestCoast immediately goes for the personal attack with this:

Mac:
I have been thinking about what you wrote and this is my response:
To go on a site where a lot of us are huge fans of all things Finn and say that you "honestly don't like any of the songs on TOE" is just ludicrous. Don't get me wrong here...I am very open to free speech, your ability to state your likes and dislikes, etc. but to do it here?

In my humble opinion that just reeks of grandstanding and borderlines on someone who needs a lot of attention. You really want us to believe that there is not a single song on the new album that appeals to you? I for one am not buying it. Don't be confused. I am buying the album, just not your post.

You claim that you have seen Split Enz, Tim, Neil and CH so I infer from that you are a fan. To go on a site like this and make the statement that you have seems fairly juvenile, if not dishonest.
Others have stated that this album may grow on you. It really matters not to me. Even if you stick with your original story about not liking "any of it" many people will adore this album. The only opportunity that I have had to listen to the new releases was on the LA Weekly page and I honestly loved each song for different reasons. Tonight while cooking dinner I found myself humming "Don't Stop Now" and smiled to myself.

Here is another wonderful quote from you from one of your postings:
___________________________________________________________________
I dont like the videos at all......except for one..."your not the girl you think you are" thats it,the rest can go out with the trash
___________________________________________________________________

Maybe there is a pattern here, huh?

In my experience there is always someone that will rain on our parade (metaphorically speaking) and you appear to be that guy. For CH to get back together and tour again is possibly going to be the highlight of my summer. Whether or not this was supposed to be a solo album from Neil or not doesn't seem important to me. They are back with new music.

This is the simple truth:
They have a new album.
They are touring again when many thought they never would.
They will develop a new fan base that will reach a younger generation of listeners.
They have made many thousands of people very happy. That includes me.

If you can tip your head to the side and let a little bit of the negativity pour out you will be much happier.

I am done now.
Sheesh.

scottishcrowdie88 chimes in with this response to John/WestCoast complete with the non-use of punctuation:

john/westcoast i applaud you for standing up for what you believe, but i think you're one of the many people blinkered by an unconditional adoration of CH into thinking that everything they do is perfect - it isnt. the album is essentially a neil album, a different CH sound maybe but one so similar to much of Neil's solo stuff that this cannot be ignored. CH and NF music is different - people can like one without liking the other, with some people it just takes a bit of time. i think mac's determination to go to gigs and support the band in spite of his reservations about their new album is to be admired, not cynically questioned. each is entitled to his own opinion, and wherever it's not classed as incitement, each is entitled to express it however and wherever he wishes, just like mac did, and just like you have

nailsinmyfeet drives by with this classic:

I've stopped posting here regularly largely because I'm sick of the whinging and negativity.

And it continues on and on and on.

Fuck me, I love Finnwank. And so rare to find the one where Neil isn't the one wanking.

I loved that piece he wrote where he put down the self-congratulatory, cliquish, heavily subsidised circle-jerk which passes for the New Zealand music industry these days.

(Disclaimer: I am a Kiwi musician and they won't let me into the clique.)

Fans aren't supposed to post their opinions on fannish discussion boards unless their opinions are 100% positive? Boy, the internet's going to be boring when it learns that.

(Me, when I was into HP I bonded with people in the Harry Haters Club, the Ron Haters Club, and other such on the forums I used. Actually, those were possibly the most fun on-topic threads.)

nope. It's always "How DARE you say anything negative about (fill in the blank for band name of your choice) U R NOT A TRUE FAN!!" which is always countered by "U R DRINKING THE KOOL-AID, WAKE UP".

Wow, different music fandom, same wank. It really is universal isn't it?

This is why I'm glad the Police haven't recorded a new album (yet?)

We've got enough wank just over the tour.

They are touring again when many thought they never would.
They will develop a new fan base that will reach a younger generation of listeners.
They have made many thousands of people very happy. That includes me.

If you can tip your head to the side and let a little bit of the negativity pour out you will be much happier.

I could have just cut and pasted that off the Police board, seriously.

Oh, Finnwank. Never change.

The Frenz forums scare me, to the extent that I would NEVER try posting a negative opinion of ANYTHING on there. Once an album's been out for a couple of years, they can be safe game if you keep your language neutral and NEVER EVER EVEN THINK of suggesting that Neil might just have written a crappy song.

Look, I'm happy (...ish; I've still got a lot of mixed feelings about this) for the new album and the tour. I'm going to three of the dates. But I'm not expecting to uniformly love the album, I don't get why this is happening at all, and I'm..... I'm kind of starting to wank here. I think I'd better get a room.

Back when finnbros.com had its own forum (does it still?) there was some fabulous wank there as well, particularly about fanmeets with Neil and the inevitable "NO UR JUS JELUS, NEIL ROX N UR LYING!!! GO AWAY!!! :(" responses to anecdotes about either one of the Finns being less than charming. But nothing like Frenz. Yeesh.

My love for the Finns is the same as my love for JKR - they could poop in a bag and release that as an album and I would love it and cherish it and listen to it for the rest of my life, but damned if they don't know their actions and words cause wank.

Ahahah, totally same wank, different band. The 'official' New Order boards get so hilarious that us jaded older fans just slag off albums we love to death to see trollish fans worshippers flailing like jellyfish because "THOSE OLD BINTS DON'T SUBSCRIBE TO THE TRUE FAITH!" *snicker*

I used to think that the day would never come
When a fan couldn't express an opin-i-on
My thoughts on it are said to be "grandstanding"
Not to mention my icon's ego expanding
I used to think that the wank would never come
When I said I wasn't a devout Finn-i-an

Bandwank is always the uglies. I mean always.

You have your True Believers, who absolutely positively aver that for one to say that the band or members thereof have EVER written a so-so song or done something the True Believers deem "unthinkable" is simply a sign of possible demonic possession, the channelling of pure undiluted eebil or at best a warning that said poster is just really, really stupid.

I could cite specifics ad nauseam from just about every fandom of any band or musician who gives me the happies, but I only have so long to live. Thirty more years is not enough time to do the subject justice.

I'm glad Finn et al are creating again. Creating is good.

As for the fandom; stop reminding me of rabid Michael Jackson fanpoodles. It's an ugly thing to evoke.

My first reaction to Neil's stuff is always lukewarm, and I panic a bit too. But then I remember one wee bit from Psych. 101 - that people tend to like better that which is more familiar to them. So I play the new album A LOT and, remarkably, I become totally engaged. Worked this time, too.

Okay, I totally get the idea that some albums you need a few listen-throughs to wrap your mind around, and some music grows on you, la la la. But this girl's saying it like she played the new album until she MADE herself like it, ha-HA! Way to trick your brain! Now you can totally like whatever you've decided you're supposed to.

Crowded House/Neil Finn are my favorite band of all time. I've got the street cred- my domains? All Neil songs. The tattoo on my foot? Neil lyrics (from Anytime).

But I do not participate in any way with the general fandom, save from the mostly dead group on LJ.

Because I HEART it. It's secret, its' special. It's mine.

And I don't want to know anything other than the tour schedule. Because Neil Finn could be the wankiest human on earth, and it wouldn't matter- I've only got the music. And the music is generally love. Hell, even the bad songs can be fun- I got them to play "parrot fashion love" a few years ago, and by any measure? That song is awful.

I'm feeling glad I've never ventured to the frenz forums.

(confessions: in the mid 90's I joined the mailing list "tounge in the mail". Everyone on it was going to Farewell to the World, and the last concerts. I was in Gainesville, FL. And I wasn't going to shit. I dropped it for the sake of my blood preassure. And it was one of the best things I've ever done)

Anyway. Crowded House making fandom wank just gives me warm fuzzies. It's like peanut butter& chocolate. You can't go wrong.
