The Life and Times of Shannon
...because I posted to the wrong fandomwank before. *shame-face*

Stephanie van Doleweerd is mad as hell and she's gonna send a letter!

In addition to being the Web Developer for Lynn Johnston's rapidly deteriorating comic For Better or for Worse, she is also the inspiration for the speech-impaired character Shannon. (Correction: Stephanie is a different person than the web developer,</a> and thus may not be the wanky party, even if she did ask for this action to be taken.) The denizens of [info]binky_betsy, among many other places, resent the way Shannon is used only to impart life lessons to the youngest Patterson child April, or the way her character is developed only to be good and saintly and not a complete person. Recently, Shannon made a speech to her high school's cafeteria reminding everyone that making fun of her and her friends was not cool - and the response in-strip was the comics equivalent of the slow clap. Since most people on the Internet have actually attended high school in the past couple of decades, however, more likely responses and storylines for Shannon were outlined in parody strips.

Van Doleweerd, whose boss Lynn is well-acquainted with internet parodies of her work (and has been featured here before for quashing such), quickly found these parody strips and interpreted them as making fun of Shannon-Stephanie personally. (There is also some debate that Lynn's employees may have purposely brought the parodies to Shannon-Stephanie's attention.) Instead of making a speech like comic-Shannon, however, she responded with a flurry of C&D to anyone whose IP sat still long enough. The result was not a slow clap.

Sure, LKH is wanky, but FBorFW wank seems to be epidemic, y'all. I presume that in the next act, Farley's real-life counterpart is gonna get wanked for saying he's racist against pit bulls.

ETA: The prior Lynn Johnston cease-and-desist wank.

Also: Icon is now more pleasing to brain and psyche. Though I'd always liked having the little sprite gambol about on my screen. Any more lip, though, and I'll dig up that picture of Carrot Top's... Carrot nethers!

You would think that someone who writes a comic strip would have a sense of humor. *le sigh*

Can we have a "don't touch my precious work!" author death-match? Please? *makes puppy eyes at the mods*

You would think that someone who writes a comic strip would have a sense of humor.

Recent strips suggest she's mislaid it.

Be funnier if the parodies hadn't gone away already *sadface*

I gave up on this strip so long ago I don't remember when it was, so I have no idea; where'd this "Shan...non" thing come from? Reads like zombies talking, y'know?

And "copywrited"? *twitch* At least "copywritten" shows marginal awareness of grammar. How people can talk about copyright without getting that it's about the right to copy, I'll never know...

See, that's one of the reasons I like Malcolm in the Middle. Stevie was more than his disability. He made friends, had hobbies, had a complete personality. He still didn't fit in, but that was more because he was a Krelboyne than anything else.

Lynn has lost it. She lost it around the time Lawrence came out and was promptly dropped from the strip. Michael never showed any animosity towards his once-close friend even after he came out, so why the sudden change in character? And now that gay marriage has been legal in Canada for how long now, they could easily have him show up again with a husband.

And about Shannon, heck, I was *in* the disabled classes and *I* would have laughed at her for that speech.

I read the parts of those linked strips that weren't altered for parody and all I can say is if that's Johnston's idea of an uplifting, inspiring character and speech, then she needs to take some more writing classes.

All I remember about Binky Betsy is being confused at why while you give excellent reasons for their annoyance, all I got out of them during Shannon's arc was 'how dare they show that disabled kids get bullied, what about NORMAL KIDS. THAT'S RIGHT'

I don't really get them. They're too angry. They made me like FBoFW.

I used to like For Better of for Worse. I liked that the characters aged, that there was a bittersweet feel to the stories -- just like life.

But when Farley WAS BRUTALLY MURDERED FOR THE EMO BY THAT HEARTLESS COMIC-DRAWING BITCH!!!! crossed the Rainbow Bridge, I lost interest.

And, boy would I have loved to see Charles Schulz write the Snoopy hit by a car storyline.

My brother has Downs, and I found these hysterically funny. Because YEAH there's a lot of mean kids out there (though there's always about two in every class that serve as defenders). Yeah, no way would they get a round of applause exception in an Afterschool Special (or FBOFW, which has evolved into the same thing).

Also? Standing on the table? Let's talk about detention...

I fucking resent the Something Awful forums for the fact that I know exactly what's going on in FOOB and can discuss this, but...

I find it kind of hilarious that Shannon rides the short bus because cleft palate surgery made her talk funny. Even assuming that a cleft palate can do that to a person (which seems kind of far-fetched), how the fuck does that make one retarded?

God, I love to hate this comic. ;_;

Oh man. I loved FBoFW up until April hit her teens, and then the strip seemed to lose touch with reality. I keep reading it for Michael's story, but everything revolving around April is unrealistic and plain ole' bad. Shannon on that table? My eyes couldn't have rolled harder. Becky having a change of heart when she hears April's telethon song? Oh, please. Where is the old Lynn Johnston, and what have you done with her?

I just don't understand why she couldn't get the cleft palate fixed until she was four. I've heard some bad things about socialized medicine, but that just takes the whole biscut.
I guess if Marvin Zindler had been Canadian, we wouldn't have Shannon to laugh at show us the error of our ways.
