Robin Hobb hates the Internet!
So, Robin Hobb posted a rant on her website, decrying the eeeeeeebil of LJ. To wit:

What I saw filled my heart with dread. Her letter was brief. It said she had finally caved in to reader pressure and was going to keep a blog. I was immediately struck with a lurch of dread. Not another one. Not another writer falling to the ever insatiable Live Journal and the tawdry lure of the blog!

A gleaming blue link in her letter flashed seductively, inviting me to visit her new LiveJournal blog. A single click was all that stood between me and the anti-fiction!

...

In the next moment, my conscience smote me. I was abandoning her to her fate. Yet didn’t I deserve at least part of the blame for her fall? Oh, my dear young writer, didn't anyone tell you that Live Journal is actually where the Living Dead of the writing world are created?

There are many kinds of vampire in this old world. Some suck ambition and confidence from you. Others press white teeth to your throat and actually draw off your blood. But give me teeth at my throat, real teeth, a thousand times over before I am left to face alone the specter of a LiveJournal Blog of my own.

...

But my dear friends, it is NO COINCIDENCE that blog and blood begin with the same three letters!

Daily you will rise and go to your keyboard. You will blog. And you will read what people write in response to your blog. And you will write responses to what they have written. And then you will visit the blogs of those who have responded to you. And you will write pleasant and cheery comments there. And then you will go back to your own blog, to see if anyone has responded to your responses. And then you will go back to the blogs of others, to see if anyone has responded to your responses to them.

And the clock will suddenly say midnight. And you will look at your manuscript in consternation. How can it be that there are no new pages, not even a paragraph? Where has the time vanished? Why are your hands so weary?

Too weary to type so much as a sentence of your book.

Tomorrow, you will say to yourself. Tomorrow I will start afresh, and I will type all day to make up for the pages I have not written today. With the best of intentions, you will go to sleep.

But on the morrow, when you wake and rise, you will not write. You will blog.

So it will go. Slowly. Inevitably.

Basically, LJ EATS YOUR SOUL. Because it is evil.

It is also full of haters. Just like Amazon.

I'll also admit, sheepishly, that when I'm already having a bad day about something, that's when I'll masochistically go and look at those LiveJournal sites that love to hate me (why do they keep reading the books, one wonders, if I can't get anything right?) or look at what is said in a 1 star review on Amazon. That, my friend, is called wallowing in misery. I'm sure I'm not the only writer who does it.

And furthermore, the entire Internet is poopy.

The Internet is a necessary evil. I cannot tell you how many times I have deeply and ardently wished that the whole thing would Just Go Away. It’s a distraction, and an interruption and tending to it eats up hours of what used to be my writing time! The Internet is like someone blasted a big hole in the wall of my office and decided to let the whole world parade past it while I was trying to write. I know I should not look in that direction. I know I need to get my writing done. But then the email dings or something chimes, and I take a peek. And suddenly it’s three in the afternoon, and my character is still hanging in mid-sentence. It’s an awful invention.

...

So, I would say that the Internet isn’t that ‘important’ to me. Keeping up with it all is mostly a form of self defense.

In short, Robin Hobb is a delicate flower who thinks that the Internet is instantly addictive to everyone and ruins lives.

...Okay!

I was going to say that from the beginning it MUST be a joke, but it's in the same place on her website as her giant anti-fanfiction rant was a few years ago, so, uh. Not sure.

Ah, my writer friend. It is harsh but it must be said. Compared to the studied seduction of the novel, blogging is literary pole dancing. Anyone can stand naked in the window of the public’s eye, anyone can twitch and writhe and emote over the package that was not delivered, the dinner that burned, the friend who forgot your birthday. That is not fiction. That is life, and we all have one. Blogging condemns us to live everyone else’s tedious day as well as our own.

...The fuck kind of blogs is she reading?

Robin Hobb is also the one who rewrites all sorts of fairy tales and folklore but thinks fanfiction is completely evil, right?

No doubt about it, the woman's having an anal sexual relationshiip with a bug... but, who is she and why should I care? Where's the response? I always thought it took two to wank.

Live Journal is actually where the Living Dead of the writing world are created?

So Charlie Stross, Warren Ellis and George RR Martin are the living dead? No wait, they're actually writers I've heard of, rather a writer I've only ever run across as a whiny footnote on the Pit of Voles.

Aaaw, Megan. Stop doing things like this, or I'll have to feel ashamed of having you as one of my favourite authors. THE PAIN OF IT.
(A quick google and whoops, Renegade's Magic is already out! I need to go hit on some friend who's bought it.)

I cannot tell you how many times I have deeply and ardently wished that the whole thing would Just Go Away. It’s a distraction, and an interruption and tending to it eats up hours of what used to be my writing time!

So the idea of unplugging her modem or halting payment to her ISP never crossed her mind. Huh.

And anyway, why is she pissing in our ears about blogging? Doesn't she realise her post is exactly that? Makes me want to write fanfic about her works, except then I'd have to read them and it's my policy not to read works by known batshit insane authors. The crazy might be contagious.

...So... the fact that she has no self-control and is not interested enough in her own writing to actually write things when she could be reading what other people write on the internet... is the internet's fault?

Heck, I'm not even actually a writer (consider myself an artist, that's where my passion is), and I still get the obsessive burning urge to tell the story and do it fast before it devours my soul sometimes, to the point where I just get annoyed if anyone tries to make me look at anything online. I thought most people who actually do consider themselves fiction writers would probably have the same thing, and probably more frequently and stronger. Unless, of course, it's the variety of writer who doesn't really want to write stories, but does so because they managed to do it well enough to get a paycheck out of it.

Which is okay, you know. I know lots of free-lancers who are writing stuff they don't especially want to write because they need the money. But if you've got fictional novels rolling around in your brain, entirely your own... how can they not demand being let out? This confuses me.

man, I don't care what she thinks of blogs--especially since it sounds like a joke--but boy HOWDY am I not ever reading anything of hers after that over-the-top NUDGE-NUDGE-I'M-SO-HILARIOUS overly-stylized piece of...*whatever* it is. I wrote like that when I was trying to be funny in middle school, for crying out loud.

(Well, and also she's a big hypocritical whiner about fanfiction, but now I'm definitely not even taking her out of the library, if this awaits me.)

But then where would we get our porn?

Then why not log off and stop paying for it? No one is forced to use the Internet.

Then she will get icons.

This is, however, actually true. Well, for me.
*looks at self doing it RIGHT NOW*
