It's not about racism *or* sexism, HUZZAH!!
This wank has comic fans getting ripped off, Doctor Strange telling someone to fuck off and John Byrne actually being a nice man (Though he'l probably still deny he's Canadian).

Forum structures make formatting this in an organised maner hard, so I apologise for that, but I figured that questions of professionalism, blatant lying, threatening lawsuits and one of the better spelling wanks on the side made it worth it.

It seems that comic artist Michael Golden is doing cons and comissions again. The only problem is that he seems to be taking a bit longer than expected to complete comissions. It seems that art he promised to finish in 2 months has been taking much, much longer. Though, he claims that he never promised it in that time or industry work comes first or verbal contracts don't count or something. Apparently, four individuals who had each paid several hundres dollars may have tried to check in and see why there art was taking several extra months and/or threatened Mr Golden, depending on which side you ask. As a result, Michael Golden sent each of them super-half-assed pieces that barely met their comission descriptions and at least two of them have confirmed they have the message written on them, "Patience is a Virtue". Golden gets bonus points for mispelling "Virtue" on one of them, instantly making the entire situation seem more campy-rediculous than an issue of She-Hulk.

You can view the piece with the mispelling here at John Byrne's forum, along with discussion:
http://www.byrnerobotics.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=19898&PN=1&totPosts=13

A few entries down on that page, you can see John Byrne offering to send the guy a drawing of his that is "actually worth $500". Somewhat cocky and possibly with a personal agenda, but it seems like Byrne is actually trying to be nice to someone on his forum. Armageddon may be upon us.

And here is the response from Golden and his art rep, Rene Witterstaetter of EvaInk (A woman whose last name makes my eyes cross) in which he denies that the art was meant to teach a lesson while still trying to teach that same lesson (bonus points for admitting he signed someone else's name on a mail slip):
http://www.tcj.com/messboard/viewtopic.php?t=2470

So, Golden claimed that people threatened him and were moved to the top of his pile. It also kind of seems like he sent these pieces out without his art rep seeing them and then left her to clean the mess.

There's a fun parody image if you scroll down here:
http://www.byrnerobotics.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=19898&PN=1&TPN=18

On this page, a final resolution is passed wherein it seems that at least one or two people were kind of lying and no one was moved to the top of the pile and people might be getting their money back or something (Gerry Turnbull's second comment on the page):
http://www.byrnerobotics.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=19898&PN=1&TPN=19

Unrelated, but on this page, you can seem images of a giant ocean bug that makes me feel itchy just from looking at it:
http://byrnerobotics.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=19898&PN=1&TPN=10

Originally, I found the whole thing here and then explored links on my own for the whole story: http://comicsworthreading.com/2007/07/28/bravo-for-byrne-goldens-pettiness/

Messed. Up.

Not that I'm.. you know, in any position to decry someone else's unpunctual commission practices *guilty cough* but that IS why they're the professionals making the big bucks.

It looks like he spent more time on the (misspelled) text than he did on the actual drawing. *boggles*

That Mr. Turnbull takes exception to a portion of the character being in heavy, dramatic shadow may suggest that he is unaware that such rendering is intrinsic and maybe even necessary to depicting this particular character in the context of mood and impact. --At least in my mind.
"You hear that? It was an artistic decision. ARTISTIC. Not half-assing at all! I've been to art school, bitches! I can use words like mood and impact!"

But I do confess that I felt compelled to do a slightly comical take on the usual Ditko hand-gesture by making it look as if Dr. Strange was blowing the smoke-like mystical effect from his hand as if it were a pipe.
"But I also wanted it to be comical! You just don't understand it!"

...as I type this it's dawning on me that his whole statement can be summarized as "MR. TURNBULL IS INTERROGATING THIS PICTURE FROM THE WRONG PERSPECTIVE." Oh, F_W. You have a meme for everything.

"It is simply a truism that I chose to make part of the work, given the history and context of its production. However, I admit that the misspelling does make it seem far sillier than intended. --I'm not in possession of a drawing board compatible Spell-Check, I'm afraid."

So not only does Golden fail at interpreting bullshit, he also is incapable of grade school editing. Good thing his art makes up for the rampant dumbassery of everything else--oh wait, it doesn't.

You know, since that resolution comment of Gerry's is actually Renee Witterstaetter using Gerry as a mouthpiece, I'm surprised that I'm the only one who's jumped to the rather obvious conclusion-- Golden and Witterstaetter made Gerry "disappear" and are now speaking through him, using his good name, to make themselves look good. How typical of the art world!

Actually, I just wannted to type Witterstaetter, which makes me think of "twitterpated".

Yeah, ditto. I'm still kind of boggled at the idea that anyone could claim that picture was done in any kind of "good faith." And it doesn't match the rest of his other posts at all.

I know it's being used to describe Golden's piss-poor attitude, but the instances of "Shut the fuck up, nerd!" and "fuck you hippie!" are absolutely hilarious!

And that bug is quite awesome in its disturbingly-hugeness.

It's always wankier, and more fun, when it's famous people being the wankers.

This Golden guy....definitely needs to check himself...he is one ass of a man.

Idiot famous people being asses to fans = fun to read wank. This one even included pictures. Double the fun.
