Nothing I could say by way of introduction could make these posts funnier than they already are.

An Open Letter To Modeling Agency Workers: Leave me alone!

I loath the 'fame' aspect of fandom. I don't want it.

I'm glad that both these young ladies took the time to clear this up. Otherwise we might have thought they were looking for attention.

Both HP, although could be any fandom, I s'pose.

So, recommendations didn't ever exist before little_needle came along?

Good to know.

We could check her ML ... it's hprecs or something.

I don't think the idea of recs in any fandom is original, but if this is what she needs to believe in order to pull herself out of bed in the morning ...

Who exactly is this "mildly famous" person? I've been in the HP fandom for three years and I've never heard of her before.

Even odder than that is the claim that Sushi writes "the obscure."

well, it's a good thing she "loaths" fame, because otherwise she might be bothered by that.

maybe what's she saying is she "coulda been a contenda" if she ... i dunno. wrote fics or something?

Actually, I can see where that first girl is coming from - I'm really sick of all those modelling agents coming up to me on the streets as well. I mean, seriously, I know that this might be difficult for some to believe, but that time when I was on television 10 years ago and the whole world saw the right side of the back of my head? Pure chance that I looked that damn good.

It's hard being famous and beautiful. Ugly people just don't understand.

It is the authors who write the obscure (Zahra, Sushi, AJ Hall, etc.) that we should be putting on pedestals. These are the authors we should be imitating and praising.

Now that can't be right. Surely no one's gonna praise a fic based solely on the obscurity of a pairing or a novel idea. If the person can't write for shit, then it's not worth praising.

i agree, but these authors are good & widely respected, so i'm not sure your argument applies in this specific instance

In your opinion they're good. Some people may think they can't write for shit. Like mynxkittie, and myself to a degree.

I've never read them, really, so I can't say if they're good or not, but I meant that in general, people should not be praised for writing something that hasn't been done.

But if you imitate the authors who are writing the obscure, won't their subject matters thusly stop being obscure? Then what do you do?

Actually, what I was getting at was the fact that Sushi, at least, writes almost exclusively Snape/Harry fics, which is possibly the LEAST obsure pairing in the entire fandom. She's pretty much a BNF in the Snarry corner of the fandom, which is pretty damn huge. So to say she's obscure either in her preferred pairing or her reputation is pretty wanky, coming from this person who I doubt anyone even knows exists outside of the list she moderates.

[Disclaimer: [info]anidraugluin is a friend of mine. Not that I haven't been aware that my friends (and myself) can be wanky. But just in case someone points that out.]

Um. The first post has nothing to do with HP fandom, or in fact fandom at all. If you find it annoying, well, okay, fair enough. And I know that sometimes the lines between what's "fandom" wank and what isn't get blurred. Speaking just for myself, though, y'all, I'd rather this not feature too many wanks about people's personal, non-fandom, lives, even if they put them in their LJ. (Because god knows, if we do that, I'd probably provide more wank material than the tinhats. ;) )

And now I shall go away, having said my own wanky little piece.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, and I do agree with you in principle, that RL shouldn't be wank material.

In this case - and I don't know your friend *at all*, I just found this through friendsfriends, so no personal axe to grind here - it was just such an obvious bid for ego-strokes that I thought it deserved the attention she was so blatantly asking for. It seemed like wank in the original jerking-off-in-front-of-the-mirror sense of the term.

::hangs head::

You're right, though.

"I've been here longer than you! Nyaaah!" uh. I don't know about you guys, but I've been lurking around in online fandoms since something like 1995 and there have always been recs lists lying around, for every fandom. But surely whatsherface must have pioneered the concept if she was around at the same time as the veela! I mean, that's like, the dawn of hpfandom.

Wait, no.

Oh for fucks sake! I just found this two minutes ago and dude, it doesn't matter. I never claimed to be the first or only recs girl. I was talking about recs pages being the new fandom 'it' thing.

If you find it good and fun to talk about people when they're not looking all is fucking fine for you. The people I wrote about in that post are mainly friends and if I want to write about them I damned well will. Fandom fame is nothing I care for and this wonderful little thread is nothing I am going to spend my time worrying about.

I will not talk about this anymore. It's long over.
