Stargate Atlantis - fanfiction challenge wank
You know, I've been waiting for this to happen for a while now. SGA wank again.




In the LJ community sga_noticeboard user partners4life (check out her profile, I almost feel bad) posts a fanfiction challenge to celebrate the launch of the new community kill_sam_carter.

To celebrate kill_sam_carter and its bright, shinning go-to girl, Sam Carter, I am announcing a fanfiction contest. The winner will receive 6 months paid LJ time (I will pay for it).

What do you have to do you say to get this prize? Well, you have to write a story in which Sam Carter is killed. I am calling it the: Kill Sam Contest!

Why do I do this? Because I don't have time for drama. There has never been a flame war on this journal and I'd like to keep it that way. Plus I've never been nominated to Fandom Wank and it is my goal to keep it that way. (Hey, I love F_W, been a member of it for years, but I do not want to be the subject of a wank, if you get my meaning. *g*)

I do feel a bit bad. I expected wank, but I didn't expect that much, after all the 'Kill Weir' community been around for a while and hasn't caused as much negative reaction. (I believe someone mentioned that in the thread).

I went to a convention earlier this year where David Hewlett talked about Sam Carter and most of the audience booed, now that was an embarrassing moment. and I can't stand Sam

Since I'm not a Stargate or Atlantis fan, it seems to me that both sides are pretty wanky. Aren't there plenty of die_characterofyourchoice_die comms out there? I'm sure none of them are overly serious and/or mature, but all these cries of "Ur a self-hatin' HOR!!1!1!!" seem a bit much.

Methinks we've got immature fanbrat treading on Church of the Holy Carter, or somesuch. Thumbs down to both sides.

The Mitchell haters were pretty vicious when he first came on the show too because he could have either come between the slash pairing of Daniel/Jack or het pairing of Sam/Jack.

I feel for poor Teal'C-poor guy left all out in the cold with no lovin'.

I don't care enough to want to stop this type of fiction. And that would count no matter the character, I love Rodney McKay but if they want to start a 'kill_rodney' community and a fanfiction challenge I'd be like 'meh, OK'. And just wouldn't bother reading the fiction. Different strokes, etc, blah, blah.

I seem to remember a decent amount of Miaka or Yui or Tamahome should die movements. Mostly Miaka though...I could be dreaming it was quite a long time ago.

I haven't dipped deep into the SG fandom (there's only so much crazy I can deal with at one time!) but if I recall correctly there is a fairly large faction that perceives the character of Sam as a combination Mary Sue, deus ex machina, and the writer/director/producers favorite and thus immune to anything significant happening to change her.

Then again, its fandom, they just might be batshit crazy.

I guess it isn't misogyny until they start to mess with your favorite character, I wonder where all the samandans were when it was Elizabeth and Teyla getting the flunk [oh wait, they were bitching about how Elizabeth and Teyla sucked because they weren't Carter].

Sometimes the samandans scare me, most of all when I used to go to GW and taking a peek at the "Sam is a great character thread" was much like visiting a church.

I've never watched SG1 and only have a vague idea of who the people are/what it's about. Is it as good as SGA and should I start watching? Not that I need another show to keep up with or anything....

Man, the responses there just make me laugh. Seriously, I don't care much one way or another about Sam being added to Atlantis (though I really don't like her hair longer). I lean towards preferring her not to show up but I'm not freaking out that she is. That said, if people want to blow off a little steam by killing off her character then I see no problem with it. I think the whole "stop watching" and "get out of fandom" stuff is stupid as are the comments saying that people should only concentrate on what they love about a show they watch. Sometimes it feels better to vent a bit whether through a rant or a fanfic, that doesn't mean you can't still love other parts of the show.

As for all the misogynist comments, I'm so sick of hearing that whenever it's a female character someone hates. Preferring slash and not wanting the male characters to hook up romantically with the female characters onscreen doesn't make you misogynistic. Not wanting to see any romance at all (and not liking slash either) does not make you misogynistic. Hating a character who happens to be female does not make you misogynistic. Seriously that response makes no sense to me. It's like people saying they hate Rodney or Daniel only because they are men and clearly they are man-haters.

You know, I am personally looking forward to s4, if only because Teyla and Keller looked damn slashy in that preview, and there is not enough femmeslash in the SG fandoms.

I'm eh on Sam, but I don't doubt the McShep shippers can get around her, and I avoid the meta parts of the fandom for a very good reason.
