You know how most communities and forums dedicated to Real People will usually have the 'will we allow fanfic based on the real person on the boards' discussion when it's just been established?
Well, Hammond Heaven, a MSN group dedicated to Richard Hammond, the short one from Top Gear, decides to have it three years after it's been put up.
It all starts when one poster says all the sexual fics are disturbing her, because people should keep their fantasies about real people to themselves.
There are the usual arguements of 'if you don't like the fanfic, you don't have to read it!' and 'we can't ban all the fanfic, some of it isn't even romantic!' and 'don't stifle my creativity!' and angry red font, even. There are some attempts at peace-keeping, because weren't we all HAPPY as a group before this?
Some fanfic-writers are beginning to feel slightly guilty, but get quickly reassured that their writing is very well-written and that they are talented (personally, I disagree, but hey, some people love Mary Sue and her less famous cousin, Psycho Mary Sue)
Solutions are given: making the fanfic section only visible to members, putting the sexual fics on another forum, but people still fear for the worst: "This will lead to censorship and sanitisation on other threads though....... we'll only be allowed to talk about how nice the ickle wee clouds look today, soon..."
However! "Kitty and others, its not censorship, its having respect for the guys and their families" But there is disagreement on how they should be respected: "We respect them by not reinacting our dreams out for real, or even trying and should be pleased about that!" And also, the person making the aforementioned arguement has Asperger's, so tick that off on your wank bingo card. She also has an interesting definition of discipline: "The fact that none of us camp outside any of their houses night after night is a good thing. It shows we're disciplined. Keeping that discipline in mind, they'll know that nothing untoward will happen to them,"
People get upset in CAPSLOCK and demand that people MOVE ON and can they get back to discussing how lovely Richard Hammond is now please?
Well, they can't. Or at least one person can't, and she gets upset in BIG angry red font! With a big angry smilie!
And another person says she doesn't feel guilty about reading the smutty fanfic, because "When I read the fics I never think the names are real people, I am creating the ficitional character described, who happens to look like James, Richard or Jeremy" And that's not fantasing about real people at all! No! She's fantasising about FICTIONAL people who just happen to look like them!
Everyone then starts hugging everybody else to make up after their big fight, and start discussing Ben & Jerry's ice cream, but no, peace does not yet reign! Long after the pointing out of other forums for smutty fanfic, there has to be the "Why not start up your own group on MSN?" discussion, even though by now most people have calmed down, and things start over again, because 'don't like, don't read' doesn't cut it, because the fic is still there and is still disrespecting the Top Gear presenters!
It'll continue. Oh yes, the discussion will continue.
And I know that it might look like a board made up of minors, but the people who had their ages up on their profiles were all in their 20s and 30s.
