WTF?! Plagiarism Wank, and not a Harry Potter fan in sight!
So, apparently, some hapless, pea-brained Sailor Moon writer named Tyler is currently writing a story called "As The World Falls Down". It turns out she claims she was "inspired" by Annie Sewell-Jenkins' Buffy story, "The Last Summer", which in itself is an admitted rip-off of Nevil Shute's On The Beach. And it WAS inspired from ASJ's story, if by "inspired" you mean "basically replaced all the Buffy characters' names with Sailor Moon characters' names and posted it as her own story". Hee!

Annie apparently initially found this amusing (right well!) although she did say, "Needless too say, the bitch is going down." This prompted hilarity through 68 comments wherein her friends give mature encouragement throughout such as "Fuck her shit up, Annie!" and the dignified "That's just so... so wrong! and my personal favorite by harmonyfb, which made me laugh so hard that I cried:

Plagiarism isn't "inspiration", and it isn't flattery. It's theft. You have stolen their intellectual property and claimed that it was yours. It is against the law.

I advise you to remove the files from your site and post an apology to both authors - and never do it again. I have advised Annie Sewell-Jennings to seek legal advice, and to notify the estate of Mr. Shute so that they might do the same.

Emphasis on "It's theft" not mine. I personally encourage AnnieSJ to please, please seek legal advice! I would looooove to see those legal documents, dude! "Plaintiff claims that Defendent blatantly ripped off her blatant rip off, from which neither made any money. Plaintiff seeks damages in the sum of..."

Well, this is all well and good, but [info]anniesj then posted this wanktastically fabulous and hilarious letter to "her plagiarist". Notice her choice of words. "My plagiarist", akin to "my abusive ex" or "my attacker".

The next day, amidst a dozen or so self-congratulatory paragraphs, she talks a little about why this shit hasn't shown up here on F_W yet. I'm an obliging sort, so y'all enjoy!

*cracks up laughing* Heh, this is gonna make her day. :)

You missed the part where some of her friends intentionally started plagiarising each other and laying smackdowns (all in good fun of course). 'Twas very funny, even if the wank was intentional.

I like this part:

Friday July 25th, 11:29am: Okay. So, I've drafted a letter. (Note, she says "drafted"... it hasn't been sent yet.)

Friday July 25th, 04:27pm: Sent that letter to my favorite plagiarist, and still no response. What the shit is this? Girl, take that shit down before I shove it up your ass. Talk to Angel. He knows how much that hurts, and he knows I ain't kidding.

....

And for all those who were wondering, I do plan on continuing to e-mail this girl until I get this shit taken down. She can ignore me all she wants. I don't care. But I'll have it taken down, one way or another. No tolerance, yo. No tolerance.

So, I don't know this Tyler person... but did it occur to anyone that she might have like a job or a life or something that would prevent her from responding in that < 5 hour period?

It probably took so long to show up here because LJ sucks like a Hoover. (It's been down for me for hours.)

I was taken aback by this from AJS, er, "admirer":

"Anyway, here's something I should have done a long time ago: i would like to give massive, heavy amounts of credit to Anniesj, who both inspired and greatly influenced this story, though she doesn't know it.

Yeah, I bet she didn't know it.

Still, the usual hysterics are typically wank-worthy. Even better if I could see them. *kicks LJ hard*

You may be receiving this error as a result from maintenance or other site problems; please refer to http://status.livejournal.org to keep updated on the status of the site" error message while trying to read said letter to the "plagiarist"?

My plagiarist", akin to "my abusive ex" or "my attacker".

there's a familiar scent to this overreaction... hey, we've been here before! I'm surprised she hasn't compared the unfortunate plagiarist to Kobe Bryant's defense team yet. Or Kobe himself. Since she wants to be ginmar when she grows up.

I'm just drowning in a sea of amusement--yo, now you-all FPF fen know the pain Joss Whedon probably feels when you rip off his concepts for your own selfish, selfish self-gratification. ~points and screams~ FIC RAPISTS!

Never understood why people take fanfiction plagiarism so seriously (and personally). I've been plagiarized on two different occasions-- one was a "take the story and replace with names from a different fandom" case like this one, and the other was a songfic of sorts where the only thing changed was the song and title. Honestly, I was kind of flattered by it. Hell, at least it means someone thinks my work's good enough to want to pass it off as their own, right?

Not that I didn't leave reviews saying "hey, this is mine, might want to credit me or take it down", but I certainly didn't take time out of my day to write a lengthy diatribe on how my integrity as a writer had just been folded, mutilated and spindled.

Also, whatever's up harmonyfb's ass seems like it's awfully painful. I don't know if she considers herself some kind of armchair lawyer or what, but her posts here and in the RPS debate thread are deliciously wanktastic. Yeah, it's a great idea to tell your fanfiction writer friend to contact the estate of the author she ripped off, to tell them that someone had ripped off her rip-off...

Right. Whatever.

Heee.

I remember...

Back in the day, I wrote this Slayersfic. I got an email from some girl who had some name like GEneralSherra or Sherrasomebody. Anyway. It was the usual, "Oh, I really like your fic, it's really neat, Zel/Xel forever, hey, come read my fics!" So several days later I had a free afternoon and went to her fiction page.

Most recent fic up? Complete plagarism. Took several scenes whole from my fic.

So I emailed her, said that, um, some of her fics there are very nice, but did she know that her fic resembled mine?

Get this NASTY bitch-ass email back: "WHO the fuck are YOU!? HOw dare you acuse me of plagarisng!!! Who do you think you are?! I've never even heard of you!"

...Yeah. Plagarism can produce some *beautiful* wank. XD
