Epic epic fantasy wank
My first time. Be gentle.

The wank has been on a back burner for a while, I'd say -- it started in February, but has, as of August 31, become a matter of "I'm not playing anymore, so there."

(WARNING: These links are definitely gonna be borderline tl;dr for some.)

It starts out as a fairly erudite exploration of high fantasy, (or "fat fantasy" in the OP's terminology), calling it inherently "conservative" (the word "authoritarian" comes up as well, later) and explaining why. Unfortunately, the OP steps on a few toes while doing so.

In Full:
The Aesthetics of Fantasy: One
The Aesthetics of Fantasy: Two (Scott Bakker shows up!)
part three
part four, and good-bye

He begins citing, as cut-and-dry & obvious examples, works he is not entirely familiar with. He is called on it. Aaaaaaand...everything swiftly devolves into a G.R.R.Martin debate.

"So [...] there is a well travelled path to decent fantasy that isn't all about traditional genre staples[....] I tend to forget this in my haste to spit bile at the likes of Robert Jordan and George R. R. Martin and their legions of passive, sheep-like fans. So point well taken[...]"

Martin readers take issue with being compared to ovines. Much debate of Martin's politics ensues. Surprisingly it takes a good while for the ire to manifest...

'But [...] your problem seems to be that you want the genre to be something that you enjoy, and that anything that doesn't conform to this is immediately derivative and not worth reading, whose followers are mindless sheep [...]'

Nuh-uh
Yeah-huh
It's not FOR you

And we end it all with a bona-fide "You were all mean to me, so I'm going home forever." In fancy language. (But why can't I spew bile unscathed on the Internets? No fair. Your fault.)
The Commonwealth of Fantasy and Why I No Longer Belong to It.

Highlights:

Martin fans are worse than LK Hamilton fans:
" ...while GRRM fans might consider themselves a cut above the average fantasy fan, I can, from experience, state categorically that they're more tribal, closed minded and vindictive than people who read stories about A Mary Sue that fucks vampires and werewolves."

Damn.

And in response to "Don't call me a sheep because I like fantasy":
"I did no such thing. I called fantasy fans, as a demographic, passive and sheep like because they are. I made no inferences from the group to the individual. [...] Similarly one can talk about Americans being fat and religious as a group without necessarily speaking about any particular American. [...] The former is akin to sociology, the latter is racism.

(Er...I think we've got that last one a bit backwards. Isn't it more questionable to make the generalization than to point out observable characteristics in a particular individual? Gotta admire the wiggle-room, though. Not to mention the funky math... *draws Venn diagrams* If all squares are rectangles, and you are a square..)

And to conclude! The drive-by lulz:
lol I dont read Fantasy at all and just randomly stumbled on this site and its pretty clear that you got owned and are in fact retarded.

Comments are closed. (No baleetion, though.) Sad thing is, the guy did have a salient point about some mass market fantasy. But nobody listens to you if you call them names. Human Nature 101.

I particularly enjoyed how both the OP and Scott Bakker attempted to prove how Very Smrt Indeed they are by completely failing to speak English

for example:

"In terms of content, the laws of fantasy worlds are CONCEPTUALLY different, which is just to say they engage different inference systems. In terms of composition, where hard SF uses what I call pseudo-cognitive transition rules to build speculative versions of the stochastically mechanistic world we've gained thanks to the Enlightenment, epic fantasy uses 'associative elimination rules' to build alternate versions of the intentional worlds we've lost thanks to the Enlightenment.

< /WTF? >

Perhaps I'm interrogating it from the wrong perspective

Barely read anything because it's tl;dr and I know nothing about fantasy, but wtf with the word "aesthetics" in this context. Does it just sound cooler than "quality"? Is literature now considered a fine art? Am I missing something?

What I don't get is why so many people read so incredibly didactically. Like in the third part, someone says:

"Orwell hated Communism yet set his most famous works (Animal Farm, 1984) in a Communist world. GRRM is a Liberal and professes to oppose strict Conservatism, and sets his most famous work in a Consertative world. Both writers wrote about worlds they say they hated, but Orwell's writings showed how terrible Communism was. GRRM's world promotes and celebrates political Conservatism. Oh sure, he may be Liberal, but that doesn't change the fact that Westeros is not, nor are its heroes.

So why does he give the thumbs up to Conservatism in his writing if he's so Liberal? Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's McC's point: GRRM is perpetuating the stereotypical notion of Fantasy-As-Authoritarian that started with Tolkien."

Has the idea of setting something in an authoritarian system in order to critique it eluded him? Fantasy where you have critiques from the outside usually comes off poorly--you know the type, where one freedom-loving country based on good liberal meritocracy has to fight the repressed hordes underneath their God-King to repulse invasion.

Issue!fic sucks.

So...

All I have to do is generalize?

Hmm, maybe I should go to fanficrants and post a rant, “Slashers are evil, that’s just a sociologic observation; I’m not insulting you!”

That will go over well, right?

My trouble with all that was that he kept talking about how fantasy was so, so SOSOSO DIFFERENTZOMG!!! from SF, and yet most of what he's talking about made me think of SF examples. Yeah, yeah, there's supposed to be science in there, but most of the golden-age stuff, especially, has uberconservative politics, worlds full of glossary-stuffing names and unecessary conrete things, racist undertones (and overtones, often) up the wazoo, simplistic Goodies and Baddies, and the Boy Wonder conquering the world for great justice. So...yeah., I think he does love fat fantasy, he just loves it with robots and space ships in it, and the robats and space ships totally save him from looking like a passive sheep who lives in his parents' basement.

Except when he climbs the stairs and finds that most people cannot tell the difference between him and all those loser Martin fans.

I'm vaguely amused that much of the responses here have been pretty much to the effect of "DA BIG WERDZ MAKE MUH HED HERT!"

But I'm grateful for this entry because one of the links led me to the website of one Kit Whitfield, who I'd never heard of before but who is made of so much awesome I must find her book and read it NOW.

I need to know nothing else about the OP except that A.R. Yvnge agrees with him to know that he is, ipso facto, an asshat.

Finally a Martin wank I can use this icon on.

I really didn't know that Martin fans considering themselves a cut above fantasy fans. I thought we were all too busy arguing over who Jon Snow's parents are to even categorize ourselves.

Dear OP,

I know you have some sort of bug up your teal-deering ass about G.R.R.M., but dude!

" ...while GRRM fans might consider themselves a cut above the average fantasy fan, I can, from experience, state categorically that they're more tribal, closed minded and vindictive than people who read stories about A Mary Sue that fucks vampires and werewolves."

That was just mean. :(

I believe that, given the evidence and information, I am capable of comprehending the point this gentleman has attained through research end education. But, in a maneuver remarkably similar to the social flocking patterns and flouncing maneuvers of other noted amateurish pedantic persons on the World Wide Web, his hubris is revealed in his attempt to dress up a totally mundane argument by shoehorning a thesaurus up its rectum until it lodges in the sigmoid colon and elicits screams of great pain from the sufferer/reader.

Somebody more erudite than myself would do well to advise this fellow (in his own native language, if they have enough time and are free from carpal tunnel syndrome) that internet debate is NOT actually a turkey, and that a severe case of hypergraphia is not a suitable substitute for delicious cornbread stuffing.

In other words, STFU NOOB!

LOL. So essentially your argument is that fantasy, like literature set in today's world, should be used to express modern political views that you agree with.

LOLx2. That is an incredibly curious statement. (That an author cannot, in good faith, put forwards an opinion he does not himself hold, unless it is satirical)

It is an *extremely* odd statement. In fact, I think it really undermines the entire point of, y'know, fiction.

I want to lock the OP in a basement and force him to review fanfic. I bet the resulting Wankatoa would be spectacular.

Wow. And I was writing m/m fantasy so I could get my Dark-and-oh-so-tragic-but-redeemably-good handsome knight in bed with the Cynically-penetrating-and-needing-someone-who-was-engaging-to-sofen-his-world-view vexingly beautiful seer.

Guess I should rewrite, huh.
