Break The Support Disk. Take 2. (Wank in the Visual Novel Fandom)
(Usual Disclaimers apply.  If there's anybody underage that I missed, I'll remove this. Don't troll, etc.)
(For those wanting to know what "Break the Support Disk" is, I point you here.)

Once upon a time, there was a Japanese Visual Novel. And there were fans who didn't know Japanese but wanted to play it. So a brave group of individuals set out to release a patch for the game so their bretheren could understand what was going on, without the arduous task of actually learning Japanese.

Can't go wrong, right?

Worng.

The Leaf Game Translation Group, who is dedicated to making fan translations of bishoujo games by Leaf, has released the ToHeart2 English patch.

However, they have decided not to release it to the public and are only giving it to a select few people.
And with that, anonymous members start to flood the thread. Lots of references to the "BREAK THE SUPPORT DISK" drama the translation group NNL caused a year prior by making similar demands.

This gets the wank started.

See how the wank flies!
See how it twirls!
Behold the doomsaying!

They also released a statement about the final release, with gems like:

the new translator is at JLPT level 1 but has never been to Japan and can't speak it very well.

Some bugs here and there that we couldn't figure out, that varied from person to person. We would've liked to release it bug-free, but that seemed like too much work.

Gotta wonder about the quality, no?

The people behind the original "Break the Support Disk" also have something to say about the situation.

Still growing.

ETA: The original post forums have been made user-only. Registration's open though.
Son of ETA: We have more thoughts on (the) wank. (Bonus points for linking this post as "f-bomb")

Grandson of ETA: The "Annoucement" forum is public once again and the following notice is posted.

Influenced by the reactions to our decisions and various comments posted all over the interweb, we have changed our minds. The translation shall remain unreleased to the public. Everyone who already has it has been contacted and asked to not distribute it further

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, people. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
