fanart wank!
Our story begins in [info]tales_symphonia, where [info]shinneth posts links to a fuckton of .rar fanart packs, uploaded to YSI. (I don't have the original text of the post, sorry.)

[info]neonclover, who is not down with this kind of thing, registers a complaint. [info]purpule follows suit.

The links vanish, apparently reported to YSI for copyright infringement!

And [info]niffe is apparently very displeased: wait a second? This is wank-bait? Wow! I thought I was just pissed off at a bunch of fuckheads!

They also emphasize their displeasure with a nice big picture of Colette, edited so she's flipping us all off...with the wrong finger.

Serious business.

Hi hi hi.... I'm pretty sure I shared fanart here before. I'm that girl who tends to have buttloads of it, remember? I got a temporary upgrade on my YSI account, which is due to expire in about a week, so having already shared all of my Tales of Legendia, Rebirth, Destiny, Phantasia, and Abyss collections and still having over 60% of my bandwidth unused, I figure, while there's still time, I should share off the lastest incarnation of my largest Tales collection! You guys... would like that, yes?

Admittedly, you can probably tell it's dated if only for the Screenshot/Official content lacking really good OAV shots. I was unable to do any picture-hunting this summer, basically. Still, with over 18,000 pictures total (that adds up to about 1.22 GB on your hard drive, collectively), I assume there still might be some nice stuff the starved fans of certain criteria would want to see!

Uhh... the easy, blanketing way to give a credit is merely TALESOFSEARCH.COM ~ because I may be masochistic enough to invest large amounts of time to upload stuff, but I'm not quite so that I'll backtrack through the thousands of sites I've traveled to far and wide just to give all the individual credit out.

BUT~! Here is one artist credit I've been submitted.

Anyone who doesn't approve of this kind of thing, save your breath, unless you're offering credit links. I know the story. And I don't care. There's bigger things in the world being "stolen" that'd really like your attention.

Anyway, grab whatever you like. D: No strings attached; just make sure you can open RARs! Oh, and, uh, didn't bother filtering out whatever might be, uh... not-kosher to the faint of heart because that is also a pain in the ass. So, uh, anyone sensitive about that case with Kratos/Lloyd (since oyako and not-so-oyako is mixed in the same folder)? Either grow tough skin or... don't.

WTF crawled up [info]niffe's ass, copulated, shat, and died a horrible violent death? If I'm parsing things correctly, all the original artist asked for was just credit on who did the art, and she did so in a perfectly civil manner. To me, that seems like a perfectly reasonable request. What am I missing here? A brain?

Okay, somebody on my flist's been *really* into Symphonia for years, and I have no idea what it is. Anime? RPG? Game? Book series? Fantasy? Sci-fi? Historical? I have no clue. For awhile I though it was just a private online role-play setting, but I guess this means it's a real fandom after all?

That said, I think the only time I ever really get annoyed (besides someone claiming they did something of mine) is over clothing designs. 'Cause yeah, I can't copyright 'em, since they're on fanart, but I usually spend more time researching time period/region fashion and making up shit to put the characters in than on the finished drawing itself, and it kinda burns when people are like "Oh, that looks cool! *yoinks for their own character with no credit*" [/thoughts on fanart]

I know a lot of professional artists that have zero-to-know regard for the work of fellow artists. Yep. Lots. Uh-huh.

I was also going to ask if the OP is underage, because their writing suggests the maturity of the average 3-day-old, cracked-out cockroach. But no one else has mentioned it, so I suppose they must actually be over 18. Scary.

This is when my habit of including the name of the website/artist (or at least a hint) in the filename of every piece of fanart, cosplay, etc. that I save on my HD comes in handy. If I feel an overwhelming need to share other people's fanart over the 'net, I can look up their websites on a search engine or whatever, and link those. (Though the main reason behind this habit is that I really need to keep some order in my fanart folders...)
