Yuletide persecutes Jews
[info]mamadeb is very very upset. "Was there a reason that the sign-ups for Yuletide were announced on a Jewish holiday?" she asks. Apparently the Yuletide mods began the two week sign up process on the last night of Sukkot. This mild inconvenience is a clear sign of anti-semitism from the Mods- and don't get her started on the name itself!

The fact that the stories themselves are posted on Christmas Eve is not as inconvenient to Christians - after all, Christmas is merely a "big dinner and maybe gifts".

Others are not amused.

What I don't get is why it being Sukkot has anything to do with it anyway. It's not as if you have to turn off your computer if you're frum the way would would during Shabbat or the High Holidays.

The last couple - okay, four - years, I have been getting progressively more impatient about the fact that I'm forced to interrupt my busy Yuletide celebrations and preparations just so I can do all that Christmas stuff - I mean, it's fun, but this is *Yuletide*. It's terribly inconvenient, especially since the stuff they make me do means I spend the whole week off the internet, and if I was in charge, I'd schedule all that for the week *after* Yuletide authors are revealed, not the week before.

I mean, the dates of the big Christmas celebration have shifted all over the place, from December 1st to March, but Yuletide is *Yuletide*, and it's always the last week in December.


(Only about half joking, here. I mean, c'mon, Yuletide!!)

They are not minor things - a big dinner and maybe gifts. They're marathon sessions in synagogue (normal Shabbat sevices are three hours. Holiday services can be two or three times that, and that's because my synagogue tends to do things on the short side.) They're two big meals a day, preferably made in advance, and preferably with company. (Fortunately, that also means we had our share of being company, so I didn't have to cook all the meals. Instead, I just had to be a good guest.) They're building and unbuilding a small shack. And, in my case, the most joyous day of the year is also the anniversary of my father's death, so they're also an emotional rollercoaster.

Far from being "a big dinner and maybe some gifts", here's MY XMas Eve and Day: XMas Ever: big Polish dinner. Must hand make klotcky and pierogi, as there is no good Polish deli nearby. The last two years, we invited all my husband's coworkers from our home state and their families to dinner, which mean I had a house full of about 2 dozen people to feed.

Midnight Mass. Which, if you've ever been to a Catholic Christmas Mass, goes on and on. You have to get there early as all the Holiday Catholics are coming and will take your seat. And Father will always take this Mass to thank each and every parish volunteer from the past year. Two hours, easily, at Mass.

Finish wrapping and putting out Santa presents. Traditionally my husband and I get to bed about 3am.

Up the next morning to unwrap said presents. The afternoon is spent cooking turkey and fixings and we often have family to dinner Christmas night.


So! *I* think Yuletide shouldn't go live until 2 days after Christmas (because I'm ENTITLED to a day off to recover!).

You mean other Christians don't observe Christmas the same way? And other people aren't even Christian? PSHAW! I SAY! Yuletide needs to be about ME!

Yeah, she can't be on the computer, but on the last day of what is considered Sukkot, which is actually Simchat Torah, a different holiday, everyone is too busy getting drunk and dancing to bother with lunch or dinner. Seriously. Synagogues will usually provide food because no one is eating at home. (Of course, since this year it ran into Shabbat, she might be referring to that, in which case, who the hell cares that it was Sukkot? It would've been Shabbat anyway.)

I mean, think about it - the actual stories go live around midnight on Christmas Eve, when 95% of all observant Christians are engaged in one or more of the following:


Frankly? That's irrelevant -- it is the nature of the ficathon that it be done on Yuletide. Therefore, everybody knows what they're getting into when they sign up for it. They'll make accommodations or not, based on their own lives.

Should I point out that sign-ups being in October are also part of the nature of the ficathon? Or is that more of this 'earth logic' that does not apply?
