The Ducks are back!
Remember those Buffy/Angel 'shippers? Well, when they're not sending cookies to Joss Whedon and asking him to reunite these sole-mates, they're attacking another fictional character: Spike. This time, Ducks created a site explaining why she is anti-Spuffy, and it has nothing to do with B/A, really it doesn't.

"Joss Whedon may think rape is a joke... something to use as a plot point... a character portrait... a step on his favorite anti-hero's 'journey'... and then that it's okay to just sweep it under the rug, mock fans who are offended by the utter lack of respect and seriousness given this grave subject on BtVS... but the thousands of women, girls, and men raped every year don't. I CERTAINLY DON'T."

Ducks not only goes after the Blondie Bear but his fans as well. "How is it that Mutant Enemy completely DISMISSED ANY discussion of those feelings, and immediately pandered to their Spuggy [sic] fanbase by implying that the Attempted Rape was HER responsibility?"

"Spuggy"? Is Ducks so mad she can't check for typos? Anyhoo, Buffyx -- self-proclaimed "avid Spike Fan" -- is annoyed and decides to mock it by putting up The Anti Abuse Site</a>.

"Joss Whedon may think that domestic abuse is a joke…something to utilize as a plot point, something to ignore because his 'heroic' character was simply 'in a bad place,' and then simply never address this SERIOUS issue in our society. However, I am sure the countless women, children and men (yes, it's a growing problem) do not take his flippancy and basic disregard for morality lightly. WE CERTAINLY DON'T."

In her/his LJ, buffyx claims "It's a parody site based on the original. . . . I guess I'm just tired of the double standard many of the antis have when comparing Spike and Buffy. I found the relationship to be equally and mutually abusing on both sides. So, my site was not intended to mock domestic abuse victims. Really, it wasn't. This was just to make myself feel better more than anything."

Let the quacking . . . er, wanking . . . begin!

Ah, Buffy fandom, how I love you. You continue to bring teh wank. I'm so proud. *tear*

At a recent convention, one brave fan asked about the Attempted Rape (offensively belittled in the fandom as "The A/R")

Oh yes. Buffy fans refer to it as the A/R just to be offensive and belittling to people like Ducks. It couldn't possibly be that NO ONE feels like typing out "Attempted Rape" over and over in discussion and the abbreviation just translated over to con-speak as well. No, couldn't possibly be that at all.

Wait, you mean the "brave fan" that managed to piss off plenty of people by talking about something that happened on Buffy at an Angel panel?

Yeah, real fucking brave there.

(Also, the whole "I hate this character and will make a website for my hate" thing? So passé...)

Eh, color me wanky but I think hidden deep within the self righthous whining there IS a good point.

I mean the whole Spike Rape's thing was just handled BADLY. Honestly he tries to RAPE her then a day later she wants him to watch her little sister?

WTF?

Of course I don't think this means that Whedon is evil woman-hater, I think it's just proof of how bad the writing got in that season.

I agree. No matter what side of the Spike fence (heh) one is on, I think many agree that the attempted rape scene in "Seeing Red" was a cheap plot device. I'm not saying that rape itself is cheap, or that violent relationships are a-okay. [Not that *you* said or even implied that - I just want to be clear.] But I *do* think that Mutant Enemy wrote themselves into a corner and took a bad way out.

I just find it hilarious, and a bit scary, that people are still so up in arms about this, 18 months later. It's a television show. Joss is not God nor is he the Antichrist. He's a writer with serious daddy issues.

>>But I *do* think that Mutant Enemy wrote themselves into a corner and took a bad way out.>>

Exactly. Actually the series did do a few eps that touched upon things like abusive relationships and domestic violence in the earlier season.

Which makes Seeing Red sadder because they could've done it so much better.

I'd better start passing around the baby oil...

I agree about the handling it better thing. Especially since Buffy and Spike had the whole pseudo BDSM relationship going...it's hard as a viewer to know how to take that scene. She coulda kicked his ass at any time. She said "no" then gave in so many times, it basically seemed like they needed a safeword.

Two things IIRC Buffy was injured when Spike made his attempt. I think she was thrown into a tombstone and cushioned the blow with her spine.

The point of that was the Buffy was at a disadvantage when Spike attacted.

Also there's a difference between her trying to get involved with Spike and her crying and screaming for him to stop.

I also find the 'she could kick his ass' excuse a little disturbing. Ya know like Spike's actions are A-OK because he didn't beat her unconcious and duct tape her to the toliet.

And yes I am being a giant barrel O'Buffy wank here.

Well I don't think what he did was all right. I just don't necessarily think that what he did was wrong. I think it was a shitty event on both sides, but it wasn't written clearly enough. Of course, I don't think what Buffy did to Spike in "Dead Things" was all right either.

I think the wank comes from neither side being able to see gray. Before "Seeing Red," Spike could definitely be seen as an abused partner. After that, they were almost even. The whole relationship was sick, so even if the scales are equal that doesn't mean anyone is less messed up. Both Buffy AND Spike were sick fucks. (So why would anyone inflict her on poor Angel... *laughs*)

Well the entire relationship was nothing but a bizzare angsty trainwreck, that I agree on.

However I have no sympathy for Spike, he willing let himself become Buffy's whipping boy [which struck as being OOC for him]. Honestly folks this is a vamp who managed to off two Slayers, he's not some helpless pansy who Buffy suduced to the darkside. And IIRC his chip didn't work against Buffy do to the giant plot hole.

I still say "Oh no! He ATTEMPTED to mess with a women who can rip off his head and spit down his throat!" Why she didn't, I'll never know -- and that's why I don't have one ounce of sympathy for her on this front.

I don't like either side of this whole stupid kerfluffle, honestly -- on one side you have the fangirls defending a rat-bastard because he's cute, and on the other you have the over-sensitive womyn rallying on pure kneejerk instinct. What-ev-er.

Ah, wanky Buffy 'shipper fandoms. Ah, anti-Spike crusaders.

I unfortunately don't have a specific link I can give you since it's on a password-locked board (and I don't have the password), but apparently one of the Kitten Boarders has decided she's going to take up her own crusade against Spike. She's made up these little cards with pictures of Spike or Spike/Buffy and ranting text about how he's a rapist and an abuser and blahdeeblahdeeblah, and she wants people to take the cards, go to bookstores, and put them into copies of Joss Whedon's biography.

I mean, I'm all for grassroots campaigning, but GEEZ, PEOPLE! Spend the time and energy on a grassroots campaign that fucking COUNTS!

According to the lovely lady who pointed me in the direction of this wank, "'Spuggy' isn't a typo. It's a deliberately insulting (in Ducks' view) version of the name 'Spuffy.' Which she won't type, apparently. Duckers are also fond of names like 'Spiketards' to refer to Spike's many fans."
