Smell that sweet morning wank!
So over on the community [info]lkh_lashouts a flogging of LKH's blog entry is posted. Things start out happily until it is mentioned that LKH's fans compare her to Tolkien.

winterfox has extreme issues with Tolkien!

Why should elves be monogamous?

No one here is original anymore!

Is there a law about using PMS as an insult?

And this just made me laugh.

Coincidentally, I just bought The Return of the King - The Complete Recordings CD set a few days ago. The Tolkien wank gods must have realized this was a perfect opportunity for another go. :D

Considering how winterfox goes on about Tom Bombadil, you'd think he came and sang off-key at her personally.

Oh sweet Christ almighty.

Maybe he didn't go into detail about dwarf marriage customs because he had a finite life and could only write so much before he died!

But then there would be wank about why he chose to develop the languages instead of spending time writing about all the elves' sex lives.

What culture in history has existed without religion of some kind? Wait, why do the elves have an attitude toward marriage that's more or less Catholic?

So the fact that there's no religion is bad...but the presence of a religious attitude is also bad? I'm lost.

Awww, they're gonna make [Bad username: lkh_lashouts_lashouts] for the jaded old fuckers who have seen it all and are sick to death of it but just can't let go.

I imagine them as though in a pasture, craggy and woolly and retaining the barest scraps of their youthful grandeur. From time to time one will raise its head and bleat dourly about how everything's gone to hell and they'll all look up with mouthfuls of grass and nod knowingly.

It's so beautiful, in my mind.

Being an anthropology student and a fantasy fan is more of curse than I would wish on most people. That said, still not seeing enough reason for that amount of vitriol.

Hey, anyone got any good high fantasy recs? I've found a lot of good stuff with urban fantasy, Gaiman and Mieville-type stuff, but I miss high fantasy like hell. And all anyone ever recommends is The Wheel of Time and OMG DO NOT WANT. D: Because otherwise I'll just be sitting on my hands trying to keep myself from getting tl;dr about Tolkien, and mango and pepper vodka can only hold me off for so long. Distraction, anyone?

You think Tom Bombadil irritates this guy a little? For someone whose main complaint about Tolkien is that he fills his stories with "boring shit", he sure gets awfully TEDIOUS on the subject of ol' Tom.

Myself, I like Tom. He reminds me of the folks who came out of the MA woods and saved those stupid Pilgrims' asses when they nearly starved to death. (Not that the Indians wore big yellow boots, mind you.)

Actually, I'm pretty sure that it's in The Silmarillion somewhere that elves are monogamous in imitation of the Valar.

Speaking of which... why do elves need religion? They've met their gods. Galadriel has spoken personally with Manwe and Varda. The elves know, because they were told, that serving their gods means simply going out and living and thereby fulfilling the vision in the music of the Ainur. They don't need to worship the Valar, and the Valar wouldn't like it if they did.

Um... wow, I think I just reached a personal high point of geekery.

No, Tolkien put a very narrow focus on his world. Try finding information he's left behind about anything outside of the elves and a select group of men--plus maybe the Valar--and you quickly realize what a flat, lifeless place Middle-earth really is. What are the marriage customs of dwarves? Who the fuck knows. What happened to the Blue Wizards? No clue either. What are the easterlings really like? Dunno, Tolkien was too busy labeling them all as barbaric heathens.

Then there's his hideously bloated prose. I'd take a comparison to Tolkien as an insult.

Tolkien hype irritates me, especially since most people aren't even familiar with his material (or, for that matter, his sources) enough to tell how exactly his world-building is so amazing.

As someone who's extremely familiar with Tolkien's works and sources, I can definitely say that this lady is a douchebag.

As insane as winterfox is (no, seriously: What? o.O), s/he/it doesn't hold a candle to LKH. By LKH's own logic:

People who don't wuv their characters and write for money = Doyle & Christie

People who wuv their characters and are true artistes = LKH

Soooo, can someone rec me some more books written by non-artistic authors who hate their characters and are only in it for the money? This seems to be the way to go.
