Patricia Cornwall Upset by Amazon Reviews [Insert Your Anne Rice Joke Here]
Either the Bush administration has moved on to oppressing hack crime novelists, or Patricia Cornwell has lostj is continuing to lose? her marbles. You be the judge. From the news section on her website:

We have reason to suspect that someone (or a group of someones) might be mobilizing people to attack me through Amazon and Barnes and Noble, etc., to hurt my sales and reputation.

So here is what I’m asking. Would you please encourage your friends and those you have contact with that if they like Book of the Dead, to please spread the word, and if so inclined, to please post their reviews on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

It’s easy to do. For Amazon.com, if you already have an account, you can post a review. Otherwise, open an account by buying a book. You can also check the boxes of other reviews to say you disagree or did not find their review helpful, if this is so. Barnes and Noble does not appear to require any account for posting reviews.

Over the past week there were about fifty bad reviews posted for a book that has gotten the highest reviews for any book I have ever written. If you see what I am saying. Interstingly, this all started right after a Pentagon high official tried to get me to make a pro Bush, pro war appearance on an aircraft carrier and I refused, politely, a photo opportunity to contradict what is in my novel! Not to mention my battle over Ruth Graham’s burial. Suddenly, I am getting a barage [sic] of reviews discouraging people from buying my book, though there are some good ones as of today because my supporters are chiming in.

Right now I need my supporters. I am not asking you to write anything you do not mean. But why should hateful people be the only ones heard?

You and your friends can help by reading the book, encouraging others to read it, and posting their feelings about it - honest feelings.

With appreciation, Patricia.
The call to arms has apparently been heard. The Amazon reviews for her latest book have been flooded with posts like this:

"This book is a good choice. Loved it...great forensic expertise! Life is complex and living life brings change. These negative reviews are absolute rubbish."

The original post currently doesn't show on Patricia Cornwall's site, so it may have been pulled on further reflection, but I've got screencaps: One, Two, Three.

I picked this up from the blog Dear Author, which engagingly riffs on Cornwell's post.

I stopped reading Kay Scarpetta when she killed off the FBI agent and the BROUGHT HIM BACK TO LIFE. That... annoyed me quite a bit. I liked him dead. And he was dead for like... four years or something like that. She really lost her touch.

Oh YES! I love how authors have decided to spend so much time writing blog posts about "true fans" defending them and less on you know, improving their work.

It's like Ms. Cornwell, LKH and Anne Rice should get together for tea to talk about all the bitches on the internet who are oppressing them.

Someone should draw a comic.

Pte. Narcissam, excellent recon work. Now take 3 others and head down the left side, I'll do the same down the right. When I give the signal, launch more reviews! Wank-vision goggles unnecessary.

Maybe I was just too invested in Ripperology as a teenager, but that book actually made me MAD, because her research was just so shoddy.

At that point I couldn't be bothered. Her writing was already headed down the sinking path of mediocrity. There's no way that she would have any accurate information on the Ripper case. When someone who isn't batshit crazy a pretend investigator says that they've solved the case, I'll take them seriously.

You know, I have to give Case Closed credit for one thing, reigniting my interest in Jack the Ripper. Even if the book itself seemed to prove that Cornwell was pretty unhinged, at least I was reminded to go read other Ripper-related things.

I liked All That Remains because it was based on a real serial killer where I grew up, and the parents tried to sue her. It was awesome.

Hm. Well, considering the ridiculous internet wank coming from certain factions of the military these days (see my post here, I wouldn't be at all surprised if her suspicions actually turned out to be right. It's not like you can expect adulthood from Bush's government these days.

It could even be some douchebag conservative blogger who got wind of all this and mobilized his Internet legions. The timing does seem otherwise odd (I've never read one of her books, but even if it deserves the reviews, why would they all show up now?)

Oh, good God, Patricia, STFU. If your latest hardcover doesn't even sell in a bookstore that specializes in mysteries, maybe you should take the hint.

Random factoid: I grew up with a girl whose mother is the RL model for Kay Scarpetta. I have some fond and funny memories of mother-daughter Girl Scout camping trips from many moons ago.

Someone I know was on a book tour where she crossed paths with Cornwell several times, and apparently the woman is something of a loon.

(Also, is anyone else having trouble with Journal Fen not loading?)

This is probably due to the fact that I've been researching schizophrenia deeply lately for a book I'm writing but I'm picturing this woman in a psyche ward in front a of a laptop screaming about how the internet is sabotaging her. Also, the reviwers aren't just humans but actually goverment cyborgs specifically programmed to defame her.

Then a hand reached through the computer, pulls her in, and noshing sounds are heard.

But that's just me.

Mrrr... I remember almost not buying Death's Acre because she did the foreward, and by the time it came out, she'd thoroughly put me off with her Jack the Ripper book.

Then I got over it and realized I could just skip her part.

My mom is a fervent fan of Cornwell and she's been trying to get me to like her books forever (I tried a couple. But when she stopped in the middle of a case to whine about her personal life, I sort of lost interest). So this wank fills me with glee. I never knew mom liked such batshit crazy authors.

I really really don't understand why popular and established (note, I didn't necessarily say good) authors seem to feel so incredibly threatened by online reviews. It seems incredibly unlikely that the very much hit or miss criticism/praise that is given out by the unwashed masses who review at Amazon or B&N or wherever is going to make that much of a difference in their readers. They're already popular and well known, people are almost certainly going to buy their books just because they're the people writing them.

Now, if I were a brand new author, I might be more concerned with what people say about me on Amazon (especially if it did appear to be a smear campaign) because it may drive people away before I had a chance to build up much of a loyal readership. But not if I'm someone like Cornwell or Anne Rice who could probably shit in a box (and probably have) and still sell thousands and thousands of books.

I could never read her books because they take place in Richmond for the most part and I really don't need to know about brutal murders taking place a few feet front where I went to college and where my sister goes now

I prefer my Patricia Cornwall stories to be about affairs with the wife of the governor of Virginia
