Entry tags:entitlement, fandom: harry potter, jkr doesn't know harry potter like i do

"Good night, sweet prince, And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!"
The essence of this wank is that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows could have been a masterpiece of Western Literature if Harry had said something like that to dying Snape. Or at least JK Rowling could have said it in one of her interviews.

As it is, Snapefen are speaking up in anger for their sweet prince. Why, exactly, does Rowling hate Snape so much? mary-j-59 wants to know, and the [info]snapedom members scramble to answer.

Is it because Snape *is* Rowling, and Rowling hates herself? Is it because Rowling is working out her hatred for God for letting her mother die and Snape is the evil stepmother? Is it because Snape is like Rowling's abusive ex-husband? Is it because Rowling is jealous of Snape's popularity?

Or is the real problem, as [info]julian_black suggests, that certain Snapefen are "bugfuck bonkers"?

For the quick-fixers among us, just check this thread. It delivers. ( ETA: Actually, this one too:"I think she hates Snape because we like him.")

ETA 2: They spotted us. But maybe they spotted the parallel universe FW where we all believe that "Harry Potter Is A Christ Figure Because His Blood is Holy and Good And Would Have Cured Voldemort Of His Crazyshitness".

[info]emestrella wrote a new essay just for us on that comm, but I haven't read it. Please don't go troll the comments. Signing out.

Rowling's hatred of Severus Snape: a theory about what it signifies.

When I summed up my reactions to Deathly Hallows, one of the things that struck me was Rowling's extraordinary cruelty to Severus Snape. ... In fact, liznc points out, Rowling is actually kinder to Voldemort than she is to Snape. Why on earth should an author who claims to be writing a Christian work be so appallingly cruel to one of her own characters, and what does it indicate?

She's kidding, right?

The story - the basic plot - is the conflict between Severus and Harry.

Of COURSE it was honey, of course it was. That pesky little character of Voldemort? Just a side plot.

Gah. Snape fen continually amaze me with their entitlement complexes. And I still wonder if they'd be such fans if it weren't the Almighty Hot Alan Rickman portraying him in the films...

WaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitWAIT A GOD DAMNED SECOND

JKR is apparently a whore and an eater of babies because Snape has flaws? Like every single other character in the series?

I think we might need to introduce most of the people there to the nice men with the pretty looking white coats. It'll be better for everyone in the long run.

The ending message of Deathly Hallows seemed to be that "death comes for us all", and to some, that is an unsatisfactory answer.

Umm... tough shit? Rowling certainly didn't invent death, nor did she callously thrust it on us all, you know.

The incident by the lake during OWLs week is, of course, a sexual assault, and a deliberate emasculation. James is never punished for this during the course of the story; on the contrary, it is Severus, the victim, who is punished because of the way he lashes out at Lily.

Was that the thing where they flipped him over and he had the grey knickers? I'll admit that was pretty damn harsh but sexual assault is perhaps not the right word for it.

And where's all this stuff about Snape as a feminine symbol and midwife and whatnot coming from? I think that's called 'looking too hard.'.

I don't think JKR hates Snape. I think she loves Arthur Weasley but no, she does not hate Snape.

This whole meta makes me want to take my Snapefen flag down. We, on the whole, will tear each other apart faster than any other group of fans in all of fandom.

Of course, we are far more entertaining than most. :D

I can't shake this feeling that she understands Snape way too well, & that's why she hates him. Her statements are so bitter, so hateful, so downright mean that it's difficult for me to see it any other way. She's nicer to Voldemort! She's made Snape in her own image & then attacked that image - more as an expression of self-hatred than anything else.

Gosh, has this person been introduced to Laurell K. Hamilton? That's the exact attitude she has, that having bad things happen to your characters (except rape and other varieties of sexual abuse, which is somehow less bad) means you hate them. I think this commentator might find a new favorite author if she just let herself look.

JKR ruined Snape with adjectives!
[info]analenna
2007-11-30 10:25 pm UTC (link)
I knew I laughed at this woman before. From her other essay:

The little boy could not be presented as a socially awkward outcast with a crush on a pretty, talented little girl - which, honestly, if you simply looked at the kids’ actions and dialogue, was the way he came across. No, she had to throw in adjectives emphasizing little Sev as greedy, sneaky, - already obsessed at the age of nine. This, even though it is *absolutely normal* for children of 9 or 10 to have crushes, and though Severus did *not* come across as a nasty little boy. But Rowling had to throw in those adjectives.
(…)
It's clear that Rowling is trying to steer her readers' reactions by her use of adjectives.
(…)
Try re-reading this scene while ignoring the adjectives, and you get a very different picture.

See, all you have to do is skip the majority of words, and everything will make much more sense! You don't like the adjectives? Skip them!

Example: Snape is a horrible person, with greasy hair, yellow teeth, and a large nose.

This is all wrong. What Rowling should've said is: Snape is a person, with hair, teeth, and a nose.

When will the Snapefen realise that they got off rather lightly in the last book? Throughout the series, Snape is shown to be an unmitigated arse, and later as downright eeeevil, and then in Book 7 he gets totally redeemed, to the point where Harry names one of his unfortunate kids after him.

Sorry, I'll take my Earth Logic elsewhere.

*snort* Crybabies. What about us Bellatrix fans, huh? She died and nobody named any of their kids after her! Rowling clearly hates us more than the Snape fans. We claim the honours in the Most Oppressed Olympics!

And so forth.

...bugfuck bonkers?

Good lord, that phrase made my day, and therefore wins the internets.

(and here I thought Mick Jagger describing Ronnie Wood as "stark raving bonkers" was funny... "bugfuck bonkers" trumps "stark raving bonkers" any day of the week and twice on Sunday!)

Yay. I decided I must get in there and not let others wank for me (zoepaleologa on lj) and now wonder if I'll ever get out alive.

More twisting and turning than a bad politician caught with his hand in the till.

I used to be a fan of Snape. Thanks to this sort of eejitcy, I'm glad the miserable fucker bought it in book seven.

What's the issue here imo is that Rowling created a character that's apparently affected and touched many people but Rowling herself fails to recognize him for that.

Didn't JKR say that Snape was her favorite character, or at least one of her favorites to write...?

As for her hating him because his life was hard, that is bullshit. Any writer knows that the more they love a character the more drama and bad (but interesting) shit will happen to them.

Who wants to read about boring stuff anyways? Also, if JKR had treated Snape in any other way it would have made him a different character. Experiences are shape character's personalities, just like it does real people. If she had done changed Snape's fate, then she would have had to change his core, and these people wouldn't have liked him any longer or even in the first place.

So basically what it comes down to is that these people like bitching, and are not satisfied unless they have something to complain about.

Boo-fucking-hoo.

... oh Snapefen. Still special as ever, I see. Don't mind me, I just want to use this icon.

(On a side note, this wank has caused me to realize that I somehow wrote a Snapelike character into my NaNoWriMo novel without actually meaning to. And I'm not even a big fan of Harry Potter. Clearly Snape was telling me to do it from the astral plane!)
