My fictional bad guys are scarier than your lawyers

Thank you to the reporters on wank report for this one.

Jeanny Driscoll/Drymwyver is a self-published author selling her SGA fanfic, claiming that she has the blessings of MGM in an email. She’s also trying to sell her HP sequel because the Writers Guild of America told her it was okay and J.K. Rowling only holds the copyright to the first seven books in the series anyway. Bonus! She also posed as a US soldier stationed in Iraq in order to receive care packages.

Summary, discussion and links here (includes the text of the now-deleted interview) and here. The interviewer and webmaster of the site formerly hosting the interview shows up here and here and he is not happy. I highly recommend Jeanny Driscoll's and Drymwyver's LuLu pages, which include gems like "This is a romance story set in mystery, and Fantasy", "Its the year 2008 and the world's Elite in Security have formed the new World Network to rout out the enemies and terrorists in the world", along with her self-published V and Peter Pan fanfiction.

ETA: Jeanny Driscoll's LuLu page has disappeared but Drymwyver's is still accessible.

Gilles Nuytens: How did you get the approval for "Hogwarts", and could you give us an idea of what we can expect?
DrymWyver: Writing the sequel to Harry Potter was a little unusual because JK Rowling in effect had it down in writing that she was not going to write any more Harry Potter books. She left open the idea that there could be sequels at some time in the future. I decided that the books needed more in-depth information. So began writing about the school and its other students. It sort of expanded from there until I had enough material to write 5 books. I did some research and found that Ms Rowling has copyright on Harry Potter and the books she wrote. However anything after that she has to apply for a new copyright. I decided to apply to the WGA first. They informed me that as long as I recognize that JK Rowling is the original author - I can write the sequel.
The new books "Hogwarts" goes into the background of Hogwarts and some of its earlier students and their teachers. How Hogwarts came about in effect and why.

... WHUT?

SGA1 - the next unit of Stargate Command - has been sent to the Andromeda System, after finding an Ancient Starbase orbiting two worlds. Upon arrival at the Starbase, SGA1 find themselves confronted by a new and hostile alien race. The Saggi. A Go'auld Mothership also in the system discovers SGA1 and destroys the Starbase, forcing the Unit to abandon it. Unable to return to Earth, they go to one of the worlds and discover a partially submerged ancient starcity. With ingenuity borne of desperation SGA1 manage to eradicate the city's defences and bring it back online. This new series of Andromeda Gate chronicles the journeys of SGA1, the new Andromeda Team, of Stargate Command, as they explore the Galaxy and thwart the Saggi when they can.

WTF is the Unit?

A partially submerged ancient starcity, huh? I think I have heard that somehwere before...

Is she actually making money on this stuff? Because I know that with LuLu you can sell books at cost, with no profit to the author.

They also ask that people not use them for fanfic because of the legal issues, so she has another notch on her 'fails on understanding rules' belt.

The blurb on her book "Leap of Faith":

Faith feels that life isn't worth living anymore and attempts suicide off a bridge, however she is stopped by the local Deputy-Sheriff. Annoyed she kidnaps him and falls in love with him, but what does she do about it? She lets him go and disappears and he ends up having to go look for her. A pair of human cupids help to bring them together again.

The tension, the suspense, the fascinatingly innovative plotline...not to mention the elegantly crafted prose!

Can't wait to read this one.

Gilles Nuytens: How did you get the idea to create the online RPG "Stargate Andromeda" on which "Andromeda Gate" is based?
DrymWyver: I have been a die-hard Stargate fan since the first movie came out and for awhile debated whether or not to start a sim group based on an alternate team. I put the idea to several friends and in 2005 we founded Stargate Andromeda. There were a lot of Stargate fans by then and it was just simple to advertise the game and get the players to come create a believable character for the game. I had to do a lot of research however and I am always checking to see what new technology is available in weapons. I have access to military technologies and use that information to make our storylines more believable. I have also created new species and new worlds and new ideas. Also a lot of the writers myself included are Star Trek fans as well and threads of conversations are references from the series.

Gilles Nuytens: And what motivated you to create a novel based on this online RPG?
DrymWyver: I am not new to creating novels based on online RPG's. I brought out the next V series called V-The Next Wave. If fans remember the original series was created by kenneth Johnson for a mini-TV series called V. I am still a fan and have exchanged emails with him personally. In march of this year he brought out his version of the Next Generation of V. But my book series had already pre-dated his by 5 years. I continued the adventures in true format, whereas he changed his book totally. That was my first foray into writing online novel RPG's. Nobody has ever done one before either. So it is kind of cool to be a first. My motivations for putting out Andromeda Gate is that we have a great storyline - it still fits inside the Stargate Universe, even though the stories are ours.

...her Stargate novel is based off of an ONLINE RP? Like with the posting and the..and...

A story set in fantasy. Scott the King of Elfthade and his force of Dragons comes up against his greatest Nemesis Stephen. Stephen wants Elfthade at any cost. Even if he has to destroy Elfthade to get it. Scott is the last remaining human being and he rules the Elves of Elfthade. This is his story,

Scott is such an elfish name.

This is a batshit story set in fail, and Delusion...

Srsly, I can't even understand this person. Abysmally stupid? Psychologically impaired? Closely related by blood to the owner of RDR books? It boggles the mind?

Hey! Steve can be troubled! You don't know that he's not. Clearly no one here has heard the Alice Cooper song "Steven". He hears his name, you know.

Just when you thought everything was running smoothly, along comes a group of people, who think nothing is better then a little matchmaking. What happened next was stranger then fantasy and more weird then science fiction. Do the two in the middle of it get involved or run in the opposite direction, or do their mutual attraction for each other become a reality. Two stories wrapped in one.

Craziness aside, this girl needs an editor, stat.

I also kind of find it funny that she used Driscoll as the last name for her fake care-package grubbing soldier since that's the last name of the guy that voice acted Peter Pan in the Disney version.

I did some research and found that Ms Rowling has copyright on Harry Potter and the books she wrote. However anything after that she has to apply for a new copyright.

…er…yes, if she writes a new book, about something else. o.O

They informed me that as long as I recognize that JK Rowling is the original author - I can write the sequel.

Yes, dear, you can write it, but you can’t publish it.

I'm getting the distinct feeling that the WGA was looking for a well-deserved laugh when they told her this.

It's like everyday life. Some people are poor and some people are rich. You never know when you get born-what kind of life you will have. When you open that door and step through it, your life is your destiny for richer or poorer.

"Self," I said this morning, "make sure to check Fandom Wank today. Something tells me I'm going to come across something insightful. Something beautiful. Something that is going to change my life."

This story surrounds two doctors, a nurse and a Sheriff. Taking place in Colorado. In the valley of Pikes Peak Mountain.

In the land of Random Capitalization and Odd Period Placement.

Dr. Kaylee Marshall works in the Med Vac Paramedic Unit. One day a Sheriff from Eastern County arrives to tell her that her parents had been killed. She goes home and discovers her parents have been keeping huge secrets from her. Her father has a contract with the Government and they suspect he and his wife were murdered. There is a lot of skulduggery, excitement, danger, love, and mischief in this story and in the end all of them find what they are looking for.

Thanks for telling me the ending! Now I don't have to read it.

Mommy, make the random-ass tense changes and dodgy pronoun usage go away, please.
