Shiver me timbers! It will be wank, and soon, my pretties
"Pirates of the Carribean" wank from the "Just Come Out and Say It" files:

Hey Fancypants Writers, get the hell out of my fandom! You're making me look bad, damn you.

I expect a cannon blast shortly.

AUGH! AUGH AUGH AUGH!

I had to reply to that one. I just had to. Since when is /researching subject matter/ a bad thing? I don't farking CARE if it's fanfic, learn what you're writing about! AUGH!

Bah... I see it more as the boring old "If you have writing skill, why don't you write original fic?" line again. I think divagypsy's post pretty much sums it up.

It's amazing, though, how all these people with the Why Don't You line think they've got some sort of revelation. Like people who have been writing fic for years are suddenly going to gasp "Oh my GOD! I never even thought of that! I've been wasting my life having all this fun! I must run off and write a bestseller immediately!"

Yeah, I saw it as "why not write original" too; I'm not sure where people are getting the "research bad" vibe.

I think the idea might be that the "go write original" line is just a cover for jealousy, the "real" reason.

I, on the other hand, don't put it past people to be so clueless and unoriginal as to sincerely say this, without ulterior motives. ;)

My translation of that entry:

I am too fucking lazy or incompetent to do even a modicum of research to make my stories believable or palatable. All of you who do? Please stop so I don't have to kickstart my teeny, plebey little brain. KTHXBYE.

Why do I have visions of this chick having Jack Sparrow say things like "Y0, d00d!"

And while we're examining pirate wank, what the hell is it with all the "challenges" on pirategasm? I've seen several posts that say things along the lines of "I like this type of story, and my challenge is for you to write it for me."

A few examples:

I just wanted to give out a little challenge for those of you with free time and such. ^^ I would be most giddily interested in reading a fic in which Jack and Will have gone slashy, Elizabeth finds out, and basically hooks up with Norrington.

and

I'm just hoping someone can come up with something that makes me feel involved...

I prefer long, drawn out stories that can keep me occupied for quite some time (details may seem boring to most, but I enjoy them!), but stories that are short and to the point can be good as well! Take as long as you want if you decide to help me out. There's no hurry whatsoever! :)
(or, to rephrase, I've created this great Mary Sue, and you should all use her in a story for my amusement!)

What's even odder is that people actually appear to be considering complying...

yeah, I thought all the challenges were kinda odd too, but not having really read any other lj fic communities on a regular basis, I wasn't sure if it was unique to this particular community or not.

There's a high level of probability that everything I say'll be wanky. Aww fuckit! The urge to post a challenge along the lines of 'Whatever you think of, write it your bloody SELVES!' is, frankly, OVERWHELMING.

*beats head on desktop*

All this and 'Good writers who dare to research should get the hell out of my fandom! WAAAAAH!' wankery that magically vanishes (replaced by chapter and verse, grovelling apologises).

I love my fandom. *waves Jolly Roger* :-D

Well, I dunno about just Pirates, but the Pirates of the Caribbean movie is, yeah. As if a movie that stars Orlando Bloom is *not* going to have it's hordes of raving fangirls. (although I'm here for the Johnny... cuz you know that's soooo much better ;)

Well, I like pirates in general, but PotC specifically is a rather chaotically growing fandom at the moment.

Pirategasm is supposed to be a fic-only community... but you can see how that's working out.

Yes, there is a lot of random squeeing going on all over the place (hopefully not in the fic-only communities, curse the idiots newbies who don't read posting guidelines), but there's also some good fic being written, along with the usual smattering of Mary Sues and whatnot.

Fancypants! Hehe, that's funny 'cause Fancypants = Monkey Island = Pirates = Pirates of the Carribean!

Or am I rading too much into this? *innocent grin*

I saw that post on my friends list this morning, and I was almost afraid to click the comments link. You know how some posts just scream flamebait...

As for how fast Pirates fandom has developed, look at the history of the community, it was created in May, and people were posting in it then too, before anyone had seen the movie there was fic.

Hah, that's nothing. There's a Pirates of the Caribbean fic on adultfanfiction.net that's been up since the beginning of February.

I mean, I saw the preview for that movie and wanted Orlando to get hot sperm shot up his ass as much as the next girl did, but that's still just a tad excessive.

ahahahhaha awesome.

how did this fandom end up taking itself so seriously? it's about makeup-wearing pirates, for christ's sake, and yet the percentage of O WILL O JACK OUR LOVE IS SO SHEDDING CRYSTALLINE TEARS!stories is SO much higher than the percentage of, hey, we're gay pirates, let's have sex!stories. which is a travesty. i mean, come on. you're GAY PIRATES. have sex. stop whining about it.

plus, there's m-preg.
