Will it never stop?
There's been quite a run on RPF/RPS related wank lately, hasn't there?

More RPS Wank. I'm mainly linking this one because AJ Hall comments extensively and makes remarks about how mistreated she was by us over her own wankage. Sniff, sniff. She's considering leaving fandom over it. She's also made a post about the previous kerfuffle in her own journal after shutting down her earlier post. And I gotta say, she's smashingly superior ;)

Why must everyone throwing anti-RPF fits behave identically? The self-righteousness, the threats to deprive fandom of their greatness... (and I say this having done the exact fucking same thing, mind you).

It's just really embarrassing. I mean, for the love of god, at least come up with a creative threat to make... something along the lines of 'You people are so horrible and evil that I'm considering writing Hansen incest pregnancy fic once a week for the next six months." Now that's a threat I'd take seriously.

I know. My attitude is generally "Bye, don't let the door hit you on the way out." Of course, why you would feel the need to back away from a fandom that you're not a part of is something that just makes me scratch my head. She's an HP person. Why can't she just go back to ignoring us?

Perhaps you can point out where, exactly, I threatened to deprive fandom of my greatness? On the contrary, I'm one of those people that fandom thinks it's got rid of, only to turn round and find I'm still here.

This would be why, speaking as a fan, I'm ashamed that Fandom Wank exists.

ahahaha!

To give the reader's digest condensed version: it is, IMO, representative of the worst problems inherent in the internet and in fandom, and while I don't paint everyone involved in it with the same brush, I think that the group collectively have got out of hand. Its existence does nothing to enhance fandom as a whole; on the contrary, it detracts.

Why is it that people constantly expect our existance to mean something? We don't! I'm here because of teh funneh. And because of squidwarts, it's like crack man, I need it.

You forgot:

I don't advocate censorship, and I don't deny that everyone, whether in FW or not, has a right to say whatever they please; however, I do feel that with the right of free speech also comes responsibility for dealing with the consequences of said speech. Holing oneself up in an ivory tower, waving the free speech flag, and using that as an excuse to mock, attack, vilify or simply be rude to others is not cool. I know of some FWers who claim that being polite isn't honest. Perhaps not, but if you ask me, it's not pretentious or phony, it's necessary in order for a large group of people -- such as any given fandom -- to get on without fights breaking out all the time.

To circumvent the argument: yes, I am aware that taking responsibility for what other people do in a group with which I am not in any way associated is not my job. Nonetheless, I am a fan and proud to be one, and it saddens me that such a negative thing exists within fandom and has only grown rather than diminished.

Meh... does everything have to be absolutely right or absolutely wrong? I personally don't care what other people write or read, really, although I don't think it's mockworthy just to say what you like or don't like (Unnecessary, perhaps, and the "OMG you are like a total hero for saying this!!!!" posts puzzle me, but so do the "You idiot, you have an opinion and I think it is lame. Die" posts).

The line between "I don't like it" and "It is wrong" is blurred enough already; that's the camp this would land in to me.

But then I'm a dirty ex-FPficcer, so what would I know. ;)

What's extra fun is that when you take a more moderate approach like "RPS squicks the hell out of me, but I'm perfectly capable of just not reading it." (which is about my position on the whole thing), the big-anti folks scream that you should be more active fighting this terrible wrong, and the big-pro folks start insisting that you must change your mind and start liking it.

I think of it this way - I happen to think that sex outside of a committed relationship is a bad thing. (I'm conservative that way). Somehow, though, I have no desire whatsoever to go to the local bar and yell "Harlot!" at the women as they walk in and out.

So it is possible to have an opinion that may or may not be controvertial/repressive and yet not make a huge unpleasant scene about it.

more rambling because I'm like that

(C&Ped)

As much as I like for my friends to read my fic, I can totally respect it if one of them woudl really, really rather not. I have no problem with people who say, "Don't like RPF, won't read it." That's their right.

When I get annoyed, as has been said so many times by so many people, is when someone says, "RPF is WRONG WRONG WRONG and no one should write it." Or worse, as has, in fact, been done recently, when someone compares RPF to rape. Or brings any sort of tragedy of epic proportions into it, even just as an analogy.

As far as wrestlefic goes, I never really even considered it RPF, as even the people who use their real names on screen are playing a role. However, sheer bloodymindedness, because of all the people proclaiming that RPF is TEH_PREVERTED, has made me throw my lot in with RPF.

Again, if someone's stance is, "Don't like it, don't wanna read it," I'm cool with that. When it becomes, "Don't like it, no one should write it," that's when I forget my manners.

Because now I braindead from heat. Sorry about the mistake, Lexin - I originally posted this in reply to you.

Part of the problem, I think, is that AJ happened to post her anti-RPF rant right after some others had been wanked upon. In the course of the post about hers, I think the others may have been alluded to as well, ie, Ginmar's comparing RPF to rape, for example. It may have come across as those being attributed to her as well.

I'll allow that the 9/11 thing may have been misconstrued - however, comparing RPF, which comes chock full of disclaimers, to the false Nostradamus verses, which were being circulated as the real thing, was a logical misstep on her part, IMHO. (That's not even getting into the dubious believability of REAL Nostradamus verses.) Even comparing journal RPGs to said verses is a fallacy - all the celeb RPG journals I've ever seen have been disclaimered, as well, and anyone who would still persist in believing them real after that? Well, they're probably the type who will believe what they want to believe regardless of disclaimers, evidence to the contrary, and so on.

I honestly do think that AJ is over-reacting here. As far as I know, all the wanking on her was confined to this journal. I'm not saying she should be overjoyed about being wanked. What I am saying is that, if her stance was really that important to her, why did she pull the post based on stuff going on here? Why not just ignore it, or say, "Screw you people, I can say what I want?" (Which she certainly has the right to, just as we have the right to respond to what she says.)

And why is she behaving as if we did, in fact, egg her house and shave her cat? She knew when she made the post that people would react negatively; the original post said as much. Yet, when the expected negative reaction happens, she not only pulled the post, but threatened to leave both LJ and fandom. To me, that's the kind of hyper-emotional overreacting I expect to see in my six-year-old, not an adult who is a well-respected author in her fandom.
