Smoking at The Little Mermaid? SAY IT AIN'T SO!
Of the many shows currently playing on Broadway, one of the more popular for the family set is The Little Mermaid at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.

Our wankstory begins on the Broadway World message boards, when EdwinDrood172 posts that he saw one of the cast members from TLM outside, in his makeup and hair, smoking a cigarette.

I had some friends in town this week, so we spent lots of time waiting in line at TKTS. We saw some great shows - August, Hairspray, Color Purple, November, and Little Mermaid (which I actually loved). However, what I saw across the street outside of the Lunt-Fontanne absolutely disgusted me. On two different occasions this past week, I saw one of the cast members of Little Mermaid sitting outside the stage door, in half of his costume, smoking. In plain view, in daylight, in the midst of thousands of theatergoers, smoking in his neon green hair and makeup. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I mean, this is a Disney show! As a long time fan of Disney's theme parks, films, and Broadway shows, I have always appreciated the company's dedication to making every patron's experience "magical" from beginning to end. However, what I saw this past week is the equivalent of Mickey Mouse taking off his head and having a beer next to It's a Small World!

I have been a working actor for over 20 years, doing everything from cruise ships to Broadway, and rarely have I ever seen someone behave so rudely. It is an absolute honor to be a working actor on Broadway. There is no other feeling like it in the world, I can honestly say. And there are thousands of actors in this city who would do anything for that opportunity. Smoking in costume, in plain view of patrons, is insulting. It is insulting to families who are spending hundreds of dollars to see you perform. It is insulting to your fellow collaborators, working hard eight times a week to create magic on that stage. It is insulting to those thousands of actors getting up at 5am everyday to be seen at open calls, hoping that this time they'll get their break. And it is insulting to the craft, itself. Whether you are doing a Disney musical or Chekhov, Shakespeare or Neil Simon, you have to treat this artform with the respect it deserves.

In short, don't wear your costume outside of the theatre.

The very first comment on the thread summed it up with "This should go well."

It is later figured out - and without a lot of difficulty - that the "offending" cast member was Tyler Maynard, who plays Flotsam. (*points at icon* That's him.) But beyond all of that, is a lot of rending of garments, so to speak, about how it's disrespectful and he is a "Disney employee" and he doesn't deserve to be in the show if he smokes, yadda yadda yadda.

Four pages later, they're still going strong. There's some bonus "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" comments as well.

But he's Flotsam. A bad guy. Bad guys do bad things, like smoking. How is this going to be an issue for the kids? If anything, it's a learning opportunity.

Well, us non-smokers are tired of getting lung cancer and dying because of smokers who have no problem with polluting our lungs along with theirs. I don't care whether or not it's legal. You're allowed to do it, fine. But don't ever expect to stop being treated as lesser human beings, because that's what murderers are.

...okay then!

S..smoking!? Hahahaha. I've heard stories of what goes on in those tunnels underneath the Magic Kingdom, and Cinderella slipping her wig off and smoking a cigarette between sessions of picture-taking is the most innocent of them.

Again, yes children see people smoke while walking down the street, but what do they care about a stranger doing so? The point here is that the homeless guy on the corner bumming ciggs is quite different than the person who is performing in a huge Broadway spectacle.

Well, y'know. If I had to choose between a guy dressed as a punk-rock eel and a guy who used tissue boxes for shoes...

... tissue-box shoe guy ALL THE WAY.

I wanna be, where the smokers are..I wanna see, wanna see'em puffing...
Walking around with those- what do they call them?Oh yeah, smokes.
Pretty pink lungs may help get you far,but smokes are required for stone cold sexy,
Walking around taking big ol'... what's that word again? Toooooookes!

Up where they cough, up where they blow, Up where they stand outside in the snow!
Smelly and free, wish I could be, part of their world!

What would I do, For a smoke or two,
By the stage door here?
What would I pay,For the smoke that's so gray,
Warm on my lips...

Betcha this town,
Would shout me down,
And they would, sabotage my career...

Bright young actors,
Cancer factors...
Ready to haaaaackkk!

And ready to go where the smokers are!
Bum one off of them and ask real nicely,
What's a Zippo and why does it, what's the word, buuurn?

When's it my turn?
I would adore,
Getting emphysema galore!

Puffin' and free... (cough)
Wish I could be... (wheeze!)
Part of their... WOOOOoooo...*COUGH COUGH HACK HOSHIT COUGH WHEEZE...*

Somewhat offtopic;
http://disney.go.com/theatre/thelittlemermaid/#video
http://disney.go.com/theatre/thelittlemermaid/#scrapbook

Is it me, or is she not hitting the notes in the highlighted video? And Sebastian has a.... top hat? With eyes? Ursula is... skinny? And all the mermaids look like scorpions? Plus, I'm not usually a stickler for what color people are in Broadway shows but if that's Triton, mermaid biology must be weird as hell for him to have a daughter with red hair and blue eyes. I don't even want to know why the palace maids have dresses seemingly made out of peed-on packing peanuts.

And the best part is they're all on lollerskates. Seriously.

I guess what I'm saying is; smoking eels? Are the least of that show's problems. However, now I want to see it, if only so I can dress like an Orangutan and throw peanuts at the stage. They can call me... Louie.

Look, I don't know about you, but I'll take the nicotine addiction over the very real possibility of a Disney actor finally giving into his desire to commit mass murder.

*snorfs*

When I was working for The Lion King in Los Angeles the first time it was here, John Vickery would be out in the stage door alley every night chain-smoking in full Scar costume. Except for the mask thing.

I have been a working actor for over 20 years, doing everything from cruise ships to Broadway, and rarely have I ever seen someone behave so rudely.

Someone's led a remarkably sheltered life.

Because lord knows kids will be wandering Time Square unsupervised and then who knows what kind of ideas they'll get! Or, man, even if their parents are there — I mean, forget telling your kids about sex or death, what's really hard is letting them know about smoking. They should just get puppies instead of taking their kids to see a Broadway show. Puppies may hump or die, but they sure don't smoke!

And, hey, most of my classmates are ruder than this guy ever day. They smoke right outside dressed as themselves. How dare they!
