Oh for the love of...
Your standard "DUBS R TEH SUXX0RZ" argument -- now with 50% more wank!

This happens every week on [info]anime, folks. Why haven't I removed this community from my friends list yet?

Edit: [info]boxgirl admits to trolling. Because the [info]anime community really needs help to be wanky. Urk.

Edit: Watch as others congratulate [info]boxgirl for starting a flamewar on the Internet. WOWOWOW.

Edit: It's now LJ Drama. How nice for the little attention whore. Here is the obligatory "so happy to be on LJ Drama totally crying now" post.

Damn, beaten to it!

I will admit, though, that's the first time I've ever seen anyone really, REALLY go off about all translated manga ever. O_o The standard "dubs are evil" is far more common.

I think this counts as a wank sub-species! *tags it* Now we can track the strange and bewdyful bugger.

>>i cannot for the life of me understand why people would want to buy translated manga. what kind of fans are these, who claim to dream of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land of the Rising Sun, but are too lazy to try to learn the language.>>

As the icons states BITCH PLEASE!

Holy shit, God forbid people have things like LIVES, JOBS, disabilities, or the simple fact that there might not be a Japanese class nearby.

I had no IDEA I was an uncoth heathen simply because I can't speak Japanese. I mean it's not like I had horrible time simply passing high school French, it's not like I doubt there's a college in my area that HAS that course, and it's certainly not that I have either the time, or the money to actually do.

I want to set this person on fire and then beat them with a BIG stick.

and SO WHAT if you're too stupid to read hiragana? are there not enough resources online for you? are there not enough translations and chapter summaries to fulfill all your needs for the rest of your life and beyond?

Emphasis mine. But uh. Translations.

So... translations by fans TEH GOOD!!!!11111
Translations by professional companies TEH EVAL!!!!!111

...

I'm sure that the Japanese mangaka are so happy to know that translating their words into English somehow automatically invalidates it and makes it not 'the real thing'.

No, not a stick. With the stick, there's a vague chance you might put the fire out.
Toss on the occasional firecracker, that'll do it.

Haha! I used to see this wank every couple of months in Les Mis fandom.

Someone: "Which translation of the novel do you guys think is the best?"

Someone else: "TRANSLATIONS SUX! U R SOOO PLEBE! U MUST REED ALL 1200 PGZ IN TEH FRECHIES!"

There's a moral to this story, but I don't know hiragana so I guess I'm too stupid to figure out what it is. Darn.

Because GOD FORBID NOT EVERYBODY IS BILINGUAL like some cultures are. *snerk*

Actually, in my experience, translating works from their original language yourself...you lose the meaning of the work, you concentrate on the little stupid things, and you start HATING the author.

Or at least, that's what happened with me an' Virgil when he decided to stop using verbs in sentences. And me an' ol' Julius Caesar when he kept referring to himself in the third person.

The poetry was easier, since it's easier to "think" in a language in small chunks, so manga probably isn't quite as bad. But...it takes a lot of concentration, and I think language is a fairly easy subject. O.o If you make your fun into homework, you have to find new fun.

:pokes head up belatedly:

On the one hand, translating Latin is indeed annoying, especially when the author is playing 'hide-the-verb'. On the other hand, when you've got to take a language, translating the Aeneid is a helluva lot more fun than French dialogues.

:back to lurkdom:

SIT down with a book and a dictionary and realize that it's a stupid PHONETIC language. want a challenge? learn chinese. memorize a few thousand characters and THEN tell me japanese is hard. few comics are ever written in pure kanji, and most of the fearsome kanji have itty bitty little kana next to them to help the dimwits learn. for all this love of art and culture i sure don't see a lot of incentive to work at a vocabulary beyond Ramen and Kimono.

Erm... for someone who knows Japanese, she strangely unaware of that fact that one can know all the hiragana AND katakana and still not have a fucking clue what any of what they're reading means. I can read every manga I have and still not understand the vast majority of it, even after a year of Japanese classes You need a lot of vocabulary to read manga, and it's funky vocabulary that most Japanese classes aren't going to teach you because they're dealing with situations that might come up in business, not tentacle rape. And having a translation to compare with? That's a good thing. Christ.

The bitch also doesn't seem to take into account that not all manga uses furigana with their kanji. For starters, Azumanga Daioh doesn't, and that's a pretty popular one, in my estimate. I also own a few other, less well known manga (if you know Ginga or Weed by Takahashi Yoshihiro) that have a lot of raw kanji.

I can read Japanese because I've studied it for years. I studied Japanese because I wanted to learn Japanese. I did not do it because of anime and manga; that's just a nice side benefit of the hard work and effort I put into it. For most people, anime and manga are just simple hobbies that shouldn't require a lot of effort. Let the fans enjoy what the enjoy and come off your high horse, bitch.

Seriously, I love these people who think that anything Japanese is AUTOMATICALLY SUPERIOR and anything Western is AUTOMAGICALLY INFERIOR. And referring to Japan as the Holy Land... Three words for you:

Rape of Nanking.

That was the moment I started banging my head against the wall...ARGH!

A book and a dictionary, you say? Well, that's just brilliant, you might get the WORDS down, but given all the ways the Japanese language doesn't map onto English very well, it's not going to help you a whole hell of a lot.

I mean, on top of everything else, it's a SOV language (Subject/Object/Verb) so the sentences don't play out the way you want them to...

And all sorts of different things. Jesus, Japanese is NOT an easy language, and there are some people who just can't learn languages PERIOD. It's not their skill.

It would be really neat if one of those anime publishing companies put out a special japanese dictionary that covered words commonly found in manga and anime and specifically geared as a translation aid. Because even though it would spread the retarded use of fangirl japanese even more, it would be helpful enough, IM0, to be worth it.

Well then. I guess we'll all just have to lock ourselves in our rooms and slavishly devote ourselves to learning languages which we may not necessarily have any practical use for, because it will make us "true fans".

Or we can point and laugh.

I speak childish Japanese. I can read hiragana and katakana. Guess what? I have no problem with dubs, as long as someone put some effort into 'em. In some cases, I actually prefer the dub- Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun.
