Laptopgate II: Now With Added Condos
As an offshoot of the Lexicon wank, it appears Melissa wank has arrived.

As part of her "impartial" coverage of the lawsuit, Melissa Anelli of TLC apparently felt it necessary to qualify Steve Vander Ark's (signed under oath) statement that the advertising on the Lexicon "covers the cost of running the site" by reminding people that "The Leaky Cauldron houses and runs the Harry Potter Lexicon for zero charge, and has since it came under its current domain name. That is true as of this posting." However, on Feb 11 she admits to denying a request for the transfer of hosting.

This prompts SVA to release more detail than anyone wanted to know about the finances of the Lexicon. Quote: "If there was any income to me, it wasn't much, especially by comparison to the income other websites have earned." The "other website" he specifically mentions is MuggleNet, whose owner claims a "six-figure income" from the site. SVA doesn't mention TLC, but Melissa goes crazy.

A bit of digging reveals that TLC's finances have been discussed before over on I was a Leaky Lounge Mod. In May 2007, a mouse says: "I know for a fact that Melissa used Leaky money to buy herself a new laptop." In September 2007, Gina raised suspicions about who paid for Melissa's New York apartment ("the web provides a TON of information about purchase prices of condos which are pretty darn high to not have jobs *koff koff*") Over Sep/Oct 2007 the subject was raised again, and another mouse said:

"To take Melissa as the main example, as has been pointed out she lives in New York. That place is very expensive, not just real estate but the cost of living as well. She is in no way living off the advance on her book because let's face it, even if all her fangirls and boys buy it it's not going to be a huge best seller. The time has been and gone for that. She has left her full time job and therefore she must be taking at least a 5-6 figure salary from Leaky. If she is doing this and has deliberately registered it in a way that doesn't mean full disclosure, then that is appalling."

The matter was pretty much put to rest until Melissa forced SVA's hand. Ex-staff are pissed. Highlights:

There will continue to be no transparency about Leaky income. They've claimed for far too long that they make no money. I can only say that I actually know this to be total BS. I'd love to tell you my proof, alas I'm not able. Steve threw some stones but Melissa opened a door that, IMHO, that now begs the question of well, so, what DOES Leaky earn then?

and:

Since Melissa is bringing up money herself, she really should answer. If she is going to criticize Steve for trying to make this a full time job that she should be above that same criticism.

Arianhrod marches over to Leaky Lounge with this:

But since it doesn't appear that anyone else is going to ask the logical question, I will.

Just how much does Leaky make from all of this--in profit? Is this considered a hobby by the IRS, or is it a major source (or even sole source) of income?

And before anyone questions my audacity, Melissa has laid it out on the line and brought the subject of hosting and ad revenue costs into the open. It's no longer a private matter--the whole world now knows about it and as such this is a valid question, especially if TLC has been or gets dragged into this lawsuit.

I don't expect an answer--I do expect to get ripped to shreds, and that's fine. But at least I'm not afraid to ask.

Melissa ignores the question. Arianhrod calls her on it ("With all due respect, Melissa, that is avoiding the issue.") Melissa gets defensive.

All I have is a teeny little toaster oven. Anyone have any baking recipes that could be easily scaled down to be cooked in that?

I don't know if you're into the eggplant...but try making little pizzas with eggplant instead of english muffins. Brush a slice with olive oil and salt & garlic, then cook it for a bit, then take them back out and add cheese (feta is soooo good) and other fun stuff.

I'm allergic to any goat milk product, but that otherwise sounds wonderful.

I highly recommend making a full batch of cookie dough, such as chocolate chip or what have you, and freezing it in a tub. Then use an ice cream scoop to scoop out cookie portions. Faster than making a batch fresh each time and, you can bake fresh, hot cookies in series 5 or so at a time whenever you want. :D

Also, stuff like shortbread which can be frozen works great, too. Just slice off however much you want and bake.

My mother has successfully made brownies in a toaster oven, as well. This recipe should be small enough to fit, if you use an actual pan instead of the tray which comes with the oven (as that might be too shallow). And since it uses 2 eggs, you can easily halve it.

Raspberry or Blackberry Brownie "cake" (note: I think blackberry works better as the flavor stands out more)
80g flour (1/2c. + 1tbsp.)
1/4 tsp. baking soda
70g butter (5 scant tbsp.)
100g sugar (1/2c.)
120g seedless raspberry or blackberry jam (I used Polaner All Fruit for lack of anything better; 6tbsp. or 3 fluid ounces)
150g good dark chocolate (I used Ghirardelli 70%) broken into smallish pieces (5 1/3 oz. by weight)
1 tsp. vanilla
2 large eggs

Glaze:
40g seedless raspberry or blackberry jam (2tbsp. or 1 fluid oz.)
4oz. (fluid) heavy cream
4oz. (by weight) dark chocolate
1.5 tsp unsalted butter

1/2 pint or so fresh raspberries or blackberries for garnish

Line the bottom of an 8" round cake pan with parchment. Preheat oven to 325°F.

Mix the flour and baking soda together.

Beat the 2 eggs with the vanilla until thoroughly combined and the eggs are well beaten.

Put the butter, sugar, and jam in a bowl and microwave on medium high until bubbly and the butter is melted. Stir, and microwave a bit longer if necessary to get all the sugar to melt. Careful, butter likes to explode in the microwave....

Stir the chocolate into the hot syrup and let it sit for a few minutes. Then stir until all the chocolate has melted and the mixture is thoroughly combined. Let it sit until it's cooled down a bit or the eggs will scramble.

Stir the eggs into the warm chocolate mixture until smooth and well mixed.

Stir flour into the chocolate mixture until thoroughly combined.

Pour into parchment lined pan and bake for 25min. When it's done, it will be dry to the touch and yield when very lightly pressed. Underbaked is better than overbaked. This brownie doesn't go chewy when it's overbaked, it goes crumbly, so stick with underbaking.

Remove from the oven and set the pan on a cooling rack. Heat 40g raspberry jam in the microwave until very hot and bubbly. Spread over the top of the brownie with the back of a spoon until thoroughly coated. Permit to cool. The center of the brownie will sink.

While it's cooling, heat the cream until very warm and add the chocolate and butter. Stir until the chocolate has melted. Let it cool before topping the brownie.

Remove the cooled brownie from the pan and remove the parchment paper. Center on the serving plate. Pour about 1/2-3/4c. of ganache in the center of the brownie and spread as desired. Let it set part way, maybe half an hour, and then pile the berries in the middle. Drizzle with more ganache if desired.

Let the ganache set fully (at cool room temperature). Do not chill, as it will cause the fruit to sweat when brought to table, and the ganache will lose its lustre. Cut into wedges to serve. Serves 8-12.

Oh, and I like to make s'mores in a toaster oven. They come out perfect every time, and it's easy to make enough for a party. They're pretty good cold, too.

Lay out halved graham crackers in the toaster oven tray. Place a square of chocolate on half of them (I like to use dove chocolates as they're the perfect size, and I usually use the dark chocolate), and a large marshmallow on the other half, flat side down so it doesn't roll. Toast/broil at moderate temperature until the marshmallows have swelled up and are browned. If your toaster oven has hot spots, line the bottom of the tray with some foil folded up into a little pad to keep the crackers from burning.

Remove and carefully tip the chocolate halves onto the marshmallow halves and press down until they marshmallow just goes to the edges and peeks out. These are really hot when they're fresh, so use care in eating. They will also squirt melted chocolate....

I used to make rice krispy chicken in my toaster oven.

1 boneless chicken breast
Melted butter (enough to cover said breast)
A small bag of crushed rice krispies

Dip chicken in butter, roll in krispies, stick in smallish pan (I have a Pyrex pan that fits perfectly into my lil oven) and bake for about 45 minutes. You can also put a small amount of stuffing in the same pan, baking the chicken on top. Whichever. :D
