The SFWA presents: the longest death throes since Monty Python...
This is not the Starbuck's of wank.* It's a bitter re-heated brew, percolated with the stagnant grounds of yesteryear.

Andrew Burt is the VP of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer's Association of America. There was a bit of a fluffle when he took SFWA money for anti-piracy program called Shades of Gray. He outright kerfluffled some pro-writer feathers when he decided to play internet lawyer and sent out DMCA notices that weren't actually DMCA notices on behalf of writers he didn't actually represent.

Damage control was done. The e-piracy committee was disbanded. A committee was put together in order to figure out what to replace the old piracy committee with... And lo, the SFWA was graced with a new improved exactly the same damn thing.

There was much rejoicing, in the sense that "rejoicing" means "bitterness" and "more disillusionment".

How would Andy top that? Why, by entering the race for SFWA president.

Thus commences a largely one-sided dogpiling. Highlights include discussion of the Dunning-Kruger effect and a 300 macro.

[ETA via hopefulnebula] Campaign poster macros are great justice!

[Late ETAS for completion's sake on the off chance someone checks back again, which if nobody does is a pity because this stuff contains at least twice the funny.]
"Greetings, gentlebeings!"
Burty supporters defile Earth Logic.
George R.R. Martin weighs in.
Burt as Walter Mitty.
MST3King ahoy!

And now, the raisins d'être, what makes this stale wank fresh again, via the Whatever with a tip of the hat to our lovely nonnymice: The Flickr group.

But wait... The son of the bride of the ETA strikes again
Burt announces that television is a dangerous threat to writers everywhere, as it gives away content for free and often does not involve white scientists having vanilla 1950s-style sex with their 20-year-old coquettish assistants while infodumping about math. He subsequently declares war upon the Writers Guild of America.

* I'm weak. One can only wait so long for RDR updates...
& ETA 'coz I can't spell at 7 AM.

As for Andrew Burt, I think he would be a fine president too, as long as what SFWA members want to do is publicly and enthusiastically cut the organization’s throat.

To say that this is a fuckwitted decision is an understatement.

*snicker* Now, see, if American politics were this entertaining, I would actually watch more of the debates and ads.

I’ve met a lot of the neo-pros and the under-30 writers who are (or should be) SWFA’s [sic] natural new membership. They see SFWA as either useless, or actively hostile to them.

Ah, the "graying of fandom," better known as "the mass ritual suicide of the Old Guard because they're too stupid to look around and see what's going on."

Scalzi for President!

(And Lessig for Congress!)

I've turned up some fun reactions when doing a quick search to try and find out more about the other candidate. This guy suggests SFWA should be changed to represent "Screaming Flaming Writer's Association" and someone running for Treasurer is equally ticked by many a thing--and contributes the fun fact that Burt's running platform is entirely on private posts.

There's a lot of popcorn-reaching out there. I feel kinship.

Sigh. This sort of thing is why it used to be one of my career goals to join SFWA, but not any more. Now I’m a lot more enthusiastic about the idea of people writing slash fiction in one of my universes. Because then I’ll know I’ve made it.
Slash fiction=more successful than qualifying to join a professional organization!

The fact Burt wants to be president of SFWA after jamming the organization into a wall twice in the last year suggests to my mind either an Aspergian lack of cluefulness, or a grim, committed drive to prove that the Peter Principle is wrong, and that, indeed, one can rise beyond one’s level of incompetence, perchance to explore heretofore unknown, virgin realms of incompetence none have ever seen before. Alas toward the latter, SFWA would be chained to him and dragged along as he frisked about these new lands.

I ... I just ... ouch, man. Ouch. Have some boobs.

In this post (http://suricattus.livejournal.com/836936.html) by Laura Anne Gilman, she makes it clear she also doesn't like Burt much. Alas, she is not terribly ranty about it (although she does have the good taste to link to Scalzi's very excellent rant.)

Her best comments are:

[H]e has, over his term in SFWA, managed to alienate pretty much everyone who has ever worked with him, and a large number of people who stopped to actually listen to him, including me. Even for a lawyer, that's impressive. <*snip*> In short, he is arrogant, narrow-viewed, and seems to believe that it doesn't matter what the membership or the outside world thinks, so long as he knows what is right for us.

Woooooow.

Y'know--somewhere in those comments(I think number 203?) is a comment by Diane Turnshek. She's pretty much my saviour, the woman who got me out of a really horrible situation when I was nineteen and stood behind me until I didn't need to lean on anyone anymore. When I first met her, I was all of fifteen, and my fondest wish in the world was to get published and get into SFWA so that I could be as cool as her, so that I could run with this--I thought--elite group of authors that Knew Things.
It's sad to see the way it's all gone, that even Diane is pulling back. For years and years, all I wanted was to be in--and now you really couldn't pay me to aim for that goal anymore.
