Entry tags:fandom failures, fandom: lord of the rings, oh christ here we go again, plagiarism, plucky girl detective, rps, self-publishing

It's not plagiarism, it's *homage*!
Over on LJ, [info]caras_galadhon posts about a case of plagiarism in LoTRips fandom and why isn't anyone saying anything? Turns out not only did the author -- one [info]namarie120 plagiarize Jane Eyre for LotRips fandom, she also published it professionally.

In response, [info]koulagirl666 makes some interesting statements, including "The plagiarism standards in fandom are obviously markedly lower than IRL, else none of the movie-based fics or book-based fics would exist."

[info]caras_galadhon rebuts her argument, [info]koolagirl666 insists that no, no, it's differently, really! And that people have approached [info]namarie120 privately, so no one should say anything. (Never mind that the private approaches didn't work). [info]readgeekeasy rushes into ask so why are you being sooo MEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN????????!1111

And finally, [info]belle_lestrange wants us to leave great writers alone

ETA: More about this on [info]telesilla's LJ post.

ETA 2.1 : [info]namarie120 has deleted flocked posts on her LJ.

ETA 3: She'll never write again and it's ALL YOUR FAULT!

ETA 4: Caveat emptor.

From the comments on the article about the book:

This is alarming! It is a GLBT finalist in the 2008 Eppies (Category K, 3rd entry of 5).

A charge of plagiarism should be investigated immediately by the committee.

A books which fails to note that there was no gay marriage in that time period is up for an award? Wow.

Jane Eyre is in the public domain, I think, so I don't know what the legal consquences are for ripping it off, but there's still no excuse for changing names and genders and passing it off as yours. I'm really surprised no one noticed or cared before this. (Though apparently the book was pulled from publication so I guess someone did notice.)

I'm also kind of wondering how much she had to "retool" it to make it (supposedly) original fiction, as it actually sounds like more of a stretch to make it about Viggo and Orli. But not having read either version, I couldn't say.

Is there a reason koolawhatsis keeps bringing up fanfic? Does she have a blind spot that doesn't let her see the difference between that and published work from which one makes a profit? Is she in cahoots with RDR? That must be it. It's all RDR's fault.

I knew I recognized [info]koolagirl666's name. She mentioned [info]reel_sga. I think she misses the point entirely of that comm. Everyone knows it's basically reworked, if I'm not mistaken, someone in one of those Reel comms word-for-word copied from West Wing (it might have been SGA, actually) and was called out on it. It's not like fandom doesn't notice when someone randomly starts quoting entire copies of text.

I'll never understand how someone can be called a "great writer" when so much of what they've done has been copied.

I'll also never understand why, even in the cases where someone really is a good writer, people think that should be an automatic get out of wank free card.

Even after all the wank I've followed here, I'm still amazed that so many people can be so stupid. This isn't a case to get "up in arms" about? Why not? Why shouldn't every case matter? Argh! DX

look it was a great fic, it may not have been for publishing but a lot ofpeople still enjoyed it enough to pay for it
lay off
its all over and done with and no lives were lost I dont see why this is such a big deal to you

Because the only time anyone should ever get upset ever is when people die. Clearly nothing else matters in the least.

And a lot of people enjoy and pay for a lot of stupid shit. A lot of people also have not read Jane Eyre (myself included), and would not necessarily have enjoyed and/or bought the work if they realized how much copying had gone on. :/

It just HAD to be my favorite book (Jane Eyre, not the rip off, ok?). WHY?!?!?!?!

I think that the title 'Jane Eyre' is confusing our brains with Jane Austin. Frankly, I always thought that Jane Austin and the Bronte sisters wrote pretty much the same, but that's just me, and I'm sure they would have been horrified to hear it. *G*

I'm not convinced Austen is classic anything except for maybe tripe.

I just ... I just ... my brain has broken.

The plagiarism is crazy, too!

Who knew this icon would get such a workout on non-associated fandom? Heh.

I love all these "but she said it was based on the book." It's like they expect West Side Story to have these lines:

"What light from yonder window breaks? It is the east and ... Maria is smokin'."

Aah, it's like her defenders have studied from the Cassie Claire playbook! All the classics, making me nostalgic. "It wasn't on purpose!", "It's an homage!", "She totally told everybody she was taking other people's work and that makes it okay!", "It's a pastiche!", and "She's a good writer so leave her alone!". It's wonderful. Those damned fandom plagiarists.
