"We differ so greatly as to be polar opposites"
The Leaky Cauldron publicly separates from the Lexicon.

[W]e do not think a win for J.K. Rowling means tighter controls on fan creativity at all, and are concerned for the opposite, as well as the attempt to misportray the issues of the case as stated in sworn affadavits. So, after a few days of careful and many-sided discussion, we, as a full staff, decided that people who have such a fundamental disconnect in beliefs cannot and should not be partners in name or spirit, and two days ago informed the Lexicon that we are severing our association....

And while Leaky has always owned the hp-lexicon.org domain and paid for the site’s hosting, we’ve promised to transfer the domain to Steve as soon as litigation is complete (a stipulation that would not have been made had ownership not been mentioned in court documents). We will continue to pay for hosting and provide free support until that day.
Note: Compare this statement to the hosting discussion back in December. There's a pretty big discrepancy there, is all I'm saying.

ETA: [info]lidane brings us a small sampling of comment wank. Also, did you know that this is a Fifth Amendment issue?

ETA 2, via [info]cbm and [info]insanitys_place: The defense has requested JKR as a witness.

ETA 3: SVA leaves a comment at the Lexicon site; the Times Online (UK) weighs in with "J. K. Rowling determined to block RDR Books' Harry Potter 'rip-off' "; a discussion of UK law from another site that has admitted to not reading the manuscript; someone is "baffled at how people are so willing to accept the notion that authors own the ideas they publish"; and I really don't even know what's going on here.

ETA 4: More from SVA in a Lexicon thread.

(Something that might be helpful: get ETAs emailed to you from Watch That Page. It's how I keep track of things elsewhere.)

So far, it's looking like Leaky are being cast as the mean girls from high school:

Posted by serious: "Not a bit surprising that a bunch of sycophants like the people running this site would both miss – or not care about – what’s really going on with this case and also dump a colleague and friend over it. Shameful & stupid. (What else is new?) However, having always found it unfortunate that the sites were associated, visiting the Lexicon without having to see reference to this place will be a great silver lining. So, good riddance."

Posted by Martha: "You should have severed the connection as soon as it became obvious where your loyalties lay. Steve is right about the chilling affect. this could wreck a lot of things for a lot of fandoms, not just this one."

Posted by Mater Inferorum: "If the Leaky staff think that this move will further endear themselves to Jo and the fandom, that they will appear the ‘good guys’ then I am not surprised in the least. Ambition on a purely cruel-hearted Slytherin level has been a trademark of so many at this website, and this move further condemns them as nothing more than self-servers, rather than true fans."

And the announcement has only hit three pages of comments so far. There's no telling what fun wankery will be unleashed later on.

Suddenly, my interest in this neverending wank has jumped 100%, if only because I sympathize with Leaky.

That's right, ladies and gentlemen. You're only a true fan if you support SVA's right to make money on other people's work.

Possibly they should examine the definition of sycophant. And, you know, copyright law, but that seems like asking too much.

Congrats, you've been to one convention, and therefore know everything. Most of your commentary about the convention was about how much you hate Americans. Were the costumes too much for you? Can't stand the accents, eh? Between the cons I've attended in England, various parts of the US, AND Canada, I haven't seen the problem with letting go and escaping into the fantasy for a few days. That's the point. Same thing with non-Potter cons I've attended - fun and fantasy to escape from the real world for a few days. A few batshit insane people have submerged themselves in the fantasy world a bit too much, but 99% of the people at the cons are just having fun with the costumes and games. You attended the convention, too, so are you part of the batshit?

As for Hogwarts House references... for people who have read the books and know the houses, it's an easy way to describe certain characteristics about people. It's a common reference point. Nobody is dumb enough to think the houses are real, and it seems that only people who are severely disturbed, obsessive-compulsive, or anal-retentive have issues with people referencing the common house traits.

Actually, speaking of problems, aside from your Brawney Man fetish (creepy, dude), you seem to have an unhealthy problem with Americans. Get over it. We're NOT all uneducated. We're NOT all fat. We did NOT all vote for Bush. We're not all loud and excessive in our mannerisms. Oh, and not all of us have those stupid, thick, slow Southern drawls. In fact, every time I've been overseas, I'm mistaken for a Canadian. Funny, that. And it's people like you who have made me decide to just let everyone think I'm Canadian.

one of my favorites posted by Katey: "i think steve is right. jk rowling has a billion dollars.

whatever the legal implications, the fact that she now refers to him as someone who she “thought” was a fan but somehow isnt makes me disgusted.

JK Rowling is lawsuit happy, and needs to get off her high horse and realize that just because someone likes her books doesn’t mean they area “good” person, and just because someone wants to publish an encyclopedia of her stuff doesnt make them a “bad” person.

I started disliking leaky a few years ago, and i now i completely do."

Because telling SVA he can't profit off of JKR's copyrighted material will somehow suddenly make free fansites taboo. *shakes head*
