An interesting side note to the RPF debate
Gee, I wonder if any celebrities are suing over this?

Hee! I keep meaning to mention that book in my arguments. I've had a copy for years, well before I got involved with fandom. I know a couple of the authors, and they're not evil horrible people. And as far as I know, none of them have been sued, and Alyson Press is still in business.

Suddenly I'm picturing the pole they slide down...

*shivers* Is it a real pole, or a fictional pole? Because, you don't want to intrude on the pole's privacy, after all.

Pole is clearly a character playing a role, Sorcha. You don't think it goes around in r/l dangling enticing-to-wrestlers objects from itself in the hopes of starting random brawls do you?

Or this, or this (which contains a short story featuring members of the band The Dandy Warhols having raunchy gay sex in a club bathroom)...but it's different when the people being written about are dead and/or not very popular, damnit!

And she lives in Portland! Obviously there's something in the water.

And I would also mention this, Poppy Z. Brite's very thinly-veiled fantasy about John Lennon and Paul McCartney as lovers, but I seem to recall the general anti-RPF party line being that it's okay to write stories that are very very obviously about specific real people, as long as you take a few seconds to come up with totally transparent false names for them first.

Yes...wasn't that Alara who said that?

A lot of people have said that in the past. Years ago, when anti-RPF sentiment was even more widespread than it is now, I remember there was a fandom that was very obviously thinly-veiled Led Zeppelin (I'm almost certain; I never read any of the fic) slash. And that was "okay," but RPF wasn't.

Splitting hairs is fun! *shakes head*

Clarifying: I'm sure the stories in question (I believe the names the characters were given were Tris and Alex) were thinly-veiled RPS. I'm just not sure they were based on Led Zeppelin.

A friend of mine who is a Led Zep freak can confirm they were based on Jimmy Page & Robert Plant. Very thinly veiled, as I can recall, though at some point in the stories one or both of them turn into vampires or something...

I settled for reading Pamela DesBarres book. "I'm with the Band". It's RPS, but she was the one who was doing it :)

Yes. It's David Bowie/Iggy Pop or David Bowie/Lou Reed (Curt was based on both Iggy and Lou though no one ever mentions the Lou parts...*evil giggle* at what I just thought) plus David/Angie RPHet (and at least implied LouorIggy/Angie if one takes the hug to mean more), plus David/ Corrinne Schwab (sp?) het as well. And that's just the most obvious parallels. I wouldn't be surprised if one were to find a journalist who bears more than a passing resemblance to Arthur Stuart if they looked a bit. Or maybe Arthur's a sidestep from Mick Rock the photographer, even.

Don't you mean "RPH", in her case? (Unless she was getting it on with female rock stars, too.)
