Oh whoa! Whoa and ack and alas! *dramatic hand against forehead*

Romance drama at it's finest. Highland Press, and more specifically DeborahAnne MacGillvray, has been under attack recently for some of its more questionable, dubious policies. Such as banning authors from author loops for daring to speak their minds and making pithy demands when an author leaves the press and... dun dun dun, messing with the Amazon review functions!

The commentary that followed was generally sympathetic and outraged.

Warning: The following is all clumped into one paragraph and is very tl;dr. But enjoy the accusations!

Well, well, well - aren’t you posters just a bunch of hippocrites!! You are doing exactly what you are accusing Deborah MacGillivray of doing - being unprofessional and insulting. A few posters are feeding you their version of the truth and all of you are feeding right into their hands - without knowing what is truth and what is not. How easily you all are being manipulated. Do you know the story behind Reba’s reviews of Miss MacGillivray’s books and why she wrote what she did in that one post? Have any of you taken the time to find out the truth? There are a few women out there set out to destroy The Highland Press and Deborah MacGillivray. Why? They lost their contracts due to their own fault/unprofessional behavior and they refuse to take responsiblity for their actions. So, they distort the truth and they out and out lie. They take their garbage to anyone who will listen (ask yourselves why they aren’t spending time on their writing careers instead). These women are out to destroy careers because they weren’t adult enough to handle their own. And, all you posters fell right into their trap. There are always two sides to a story, yet these “authors” count on feeding their line of bull to anyone who will listen and everyone lapping it up without finding out the truth. Shame on all of you for buying into their crap. Deborah MacGillivray and Leanne Burroughs are nothing but the utmost professionals and these spiteful children in adult bodies could do a lot worse. What they don’t realize is how this will all come back to bite them one day - their vindictiveness and jealousy (we should all be so lucky as to have two NYC publishers) and outrageous behavior. I hope all of you can sleep at night after villifying one person based on the distortions of a few with a grudge.

I love it when authors (and/or their fans) go totally bugnuts insane.

Also, there is a comparison to Fandom, re: BNFs and big heads.

Edit: Forgot a link. Also, thank you to the Anonymouse who reported this.

I wonder if I should be glad or not big blocks of texts like this makes my mind go blank while trying to read the tl;dr or not.

Plus, even if NYC has only two publishers I'm sure there are many more publishers elsewhere so I'm not getting what the (we should all be so lucky as to have two NYC publishers) comment is all about.

*picks up 2008 Writer's Market*

Funny, I just counted a full dozen publishers in the 'A' section alone. And that's not counting the small press section, which had more than three.

Now more than two publishers of a "Crazy diatribes"? That might be a different story.

Why yes we can! It's the way Mommy taught us, over in the Serengheti. As she always said, "If it warms the black cockles of your shrunken heart, then you can sleep at night knowing you've done the right thing". Thanks Mom! And thank you batshit author. So do we need a Hippocritic Oath?
I swear by the author and all gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfill according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant:
That I will honor those who bring me porn, and defend them in all flame wars, and if they are in need of iPods I will give them a share of mine, until such time as it is fitting to eat our own...

Eee! Nora came! She's like Santa on Christmas, except not on christmas and with a sack full of pithy STFU.

Nora Roberts on April 8th, 2008 at 7:48 am:

Happy HP. I don’t write for Highland. I can read quite well and form my own opinion of the writer. This one slashed at a reader over a lukewarm review. The reader was pounced on, insulted, stalked.

Over a review.

I find that pitiful and unprofessional, and just plain sad.

Manipulating reviews on Amazon? Also pitiful, unprofessional and just plain sad, imo.

Your attack post made you look exactly the same.

And my career’s doing pretty well, thanks.

Dear OP:

The word you are looking for is "woe". "Woe and alack and alas."

"Whoa" is an interjection of surprised and traditionally used to stop a horse.

Comment 119 on the Dear Author thread, by AnnyAuthor, made on April 8, 2:28PM, posits that our tl;dr maniac is Victoria Houseman of Highland Press. AnnyAuthor found very similar tl;dr here:

http://urbanfantasyland.wordpress.com

from a "Victoria Bromley". AnnyAuthor then checked out Highland Press' authors and decided Victoria Bromley must be Victoria Houseman. Which is pretty weak evidence, but okay.

MORE INTERESTING is the story of one reviewer who was stalked by McGillvray's evil minions for posting a 3-star review on Amazon. The whole story can be found here:

http://www.amazon.com/tag/romance/forum/ref=cm_cd_ef_tft_tp?%5Fencoding=UTF8&cdForum=FxM42D5QN2YZ1D&cdThread=Tx1GBYID02K3VTS&displayType=tagsDetail
(Skip ahead to page 4 and do a word search for "Reba Belle".)

Here's the highlights from the above link:

"I encountered the illustrous Deb. Mac. and her faithful pack of hounds in August 2007. I posted a 3 star review for "In Her Bed" and within minutes I had comments from what I now know are "the pack."

(snip)

The comments degraded to the point of telling me I wouldn't know a good book if it....Then, my review was deleted.

I contacted Amazon and it was reinstated, as is, no changes.

Then it was deleted again.

I contacted Amazon and it was reinstated, as is, no changes.

Then it was deleted again.

It took Amazon about 5 days to reinstate the review each time it was removed and within hours, it was gone again.

(snip)

In [the discussion boards] I saw a group talking about author's posting nasty-graham's if they didn't like their books. I chimed in and posted what happened to me (up to this point) with Deb. Mac and "the pack." I even retyped by review (because it was still down). My reviews are never harsh. I even commented on I liked "A Restless Knight." But, she found it offensive.

"The Pack" swarmed in on that discussion like flies to honey. It was comical and made my point. Silky, Anne Raven, Leanne Grant showed what they were like in the schoolyard. Pinhead, back-end of a horse, and other trite names were listed for my description.

Leanne Grant later went back to edit her posts in "Read any BAD books lately." She posted information to let me know they had my real name, looked up my family tree in geneology.com, and looked at my family website.

(snip)

Later, I noticed the discussion for "delections of reviews to raise star ratings" and told my story.

This is when the veiled threats to my family began.

(snip)

- "The Pack" commenced to go through my previous book reviews, comment and click the review was not helpful.

- She/they took down 5 star reviews I wrote for other authors. Go figure.

- They DO guard a group of authors. Dawn Thompson, Leanne Burroughs, Barbara Pierce, Emma Holly, etc. It's a pack, I'll post good reviews for your book, if you post good reviews for mine and we'll hound anyone that doesn't conform.

Yes, they told me I was interferring with a person's livelyhood by not rating 5 stars."

Nora Roberts on April 9th, 2008 at 12:18 pm:

I’ve had inquiries as to the minor comments I’ve made on this, asking if it was really me as they wonder I would comment in a discussion ripping another writer’s rep.

Please. She ripped her own, in her own words on a public forum. And that’s what I commented on.

Amazing that anyone would defend the trouncing this woman gave a reader. Or could defend manipulation of reviews, or what seems to be bully and intimidation tactics towards other authors.
