Current mood:Stoked
Entry tags:community: fanficrants, elitism, fandom_wank's thoughts on yaoi, i know it because of my learnings, my education let me show you it, oh christ here we go again, omg mock people mock, otf_wank, please mommy make it stop, stop sharing your thoughts, think of the children

The fish is in a barrel, but was it home-schooled?
Fanficrants again. And yet, not a single thought on yaoi in sight. Instead, we have [info]emmabrock posting a review she got on a recent story of hers, as you do. However, the fanfic review -- the fandom for which is never even mentioned -- is really secondary to the real purpose of emmabrock's post, which is: Homeschooling!

The wank wastes no time, as [info]emmabrock helpfully shares some of her, "ah, research," by which she means googling for homeschooling vs. publicschooling wankbait. Helpfully, she posts some of her results, which 'prove' that homeschoolers regard public-schoolers as barely one step above microbes.

So, are public-schoolers illiterate, drooling retards, or are home-schoolers surly, elitist, socially malformed trolls? Judging by some of the responses to emmabrock's post, I don't see why both can't be right:

[info]vandonovan starts us off: Ironically, all the homeschooled kids I ever knew were so socially retarded they could barely function in normal society, and had no friends. Not because they liked classical music and not sex and Satan worshiping like the rest of us, but because they WERE JUST SOCIALLY RETARDED. And would talk too loud and make ridiculous jokes and had no idea how to interact with people. They also couldn't seem to hold jobs. I'd say they were exceptionally dumb, too, but maybe that was just perception.

[info]elliemurray is not pleased: Being home schooled (yes, it's two words, like public schooled) makes you "socially retarded" and unable to hold down a job?

BULL SHIT. Public high schoolers are barely literate. They don't read. They sparknote everything. They're failing mathematics, and they don't care. They don't know how to read "magenta" or "cerulean", let alone spell it. They don't speak recognizable English, they need an expletive every three words to express themselves.

But they're clearly better than us poor, retarded, socially inept home schooled children, we can't hold jobs or interact with our peer group because we never leave the house. Thanks for letting me know that. I'll call up my boss and tell him I'm too dumb to hold down a job, right away.

[info]singwithin calls troll, or at least wankbaiting: So you got a stupid review, that doesn't mean you need to find the weirdest quotes from the most weirdest homeschoolers you can find to prove that they are, in fact.. whatever it was you were trying to prove.

But apparently not without achieving the effect she intended: You know, I was going to tell you that you were overgeneralizing based on the comment of one reviewer and that this is not the place for this type of rant (it isn't), but the types of comments I have seen from a community that I usually find intelligent, reasonable and open-minded has shown me that you are right. Most homeschoolers apparantly do think that people who go to public schools are barely literate morons.

"Intelligent, reasonable, and open-minded?"

lawl.

Well, apparently the mods at least aren't open-minded enough, because [info]emmabrock promptly gets banned for editing her post. And then unbanned a little later because she might not actually have edited her post, maybe. Oh, well, as long as we're clear on what we're doing and why.

Comments devolve into "My Thoughts On Education" on the second page off the FFR post with no new comment thread kerfluffles to show for it, but in the meantime the wank moves to a reaction post on fanficrantsrants, where people are shocked I say, just shocked irritated by the mod's overreaction.

Does this mean we have another category of people who don't exist? Namely, private school kids?

My personal favorite: I think it's kind of ironic that you're posting with an overly aggressive tone and a manner that is extremely abrasive and unpleasant in defense of the social skills of people who were home schooled.

Also, someone else read the title of the post as a cheeky self-barb, right? Like, they had to have their homeschooled friend write it for them? Because [info]elliemurray appears to think it was an insult.

I agree with you, OP, both sides are set to sail away on the failboat on this one.

all the homeschooled kids I ever knew were so socially retarded they could barely function in normal society, and had no friends.

Social retardation is a phenomenon unique to homeschoolers, you guys! There are no socially retarded kids in the public schools. At all.

For the record, NO ONE has definitively decided if it's spelled homeschool, home-school or home school. All of them are acceptable, though its use as a compound word is the variation I see most often when referring to the actual existence or locale (i.e., "in the homeschool," like classroom, schoolhouse, etc.) and also when referring to homeschoolers. However, as a verb, i.e., "my child is home schooled," it's most often used the way the wanka said.

I could go on, but my socially retarded, elitist kid is expecting two socially retarded, elitist friends for a homeschool play date to kick ass on Age of Empires and some new Wii game and I need to bake cookies.

I was seriously wondering how long it would take for this wank to get here, as it exploded awfully quickly and I couldn't see why. I mean, I went to a public school, but one of my best friends (at our elitist, non-existent private college!) was home schooled. And, unsurprisingly, we had about the same level of social skills and intelligence. GO FIGURE.

His biggest complaint about being home schooled was that, when applying to college, he had to take extra standardized tests to prove he knew what he was doing, and had to come in for extra interviews. And I can see that being irritating.

But there I go, using Earth Logic again... I should just remember not to apply it anywhere near here.

Aside from the obvious irony of these people showing off their "intellectual superiority" by arguing on the internet...no, wait, let me dwell on that for a minute. On the one hand, we have the "I was home-schooled and thus have a magnificent space brain, which I am going to use to argue on the internet," and on the other we have "I went to public school and am thus not a social retard but a well-adjusted human being, who spends my time arguing on the internet."

...

On the plus side, I've been waiting for a chance to use this icon for like a week now.

BULL SHIT. Public high schoolers are barely literate. They don't read. They sparknote everything. They're failing mathematics, and they don't care. They don't know how to read "magenta" or "cerulean", let alone spell it. They don't speak recognizable English, they need an expletive every three words to express themselves.

What would I ever, ever do without people like [info]elliemurray to tell me about myself? I guess the piles and piles and piles of books on my shelves are just figments of my imagination? Like those dirty private school kids!

Actually, that comment pissed me off enough I almost broke the rules and went to slap her on the wank. Then I thought better about it and had pudding instead.

The breaking argument, of course, is who has more of a right to get pissed off on the internet. The public school kids, blowing off some steam in between researching for that tough paper, or the homeschooled kids, who've done all their work due to the special attention they're given and thus have time to laze about online?

So you want erudite insults? All right. You're a foul and pestilent congregation of vapors. You're as tedious as a tired horse, a railing wife, worse than a smoky house. You're an asshead and a coxcomb and a knave. You're an unlettered small-knowing soul.

And I can keep going. Ah, the benefits of being a Shakespeare-obsessed theatre student.

"The decision of whether to homeschool your child is a matter of asking yourself, do you want to protect your child from drugs, alcohol, and promiscuity?"

Something about that just makes me giggle terribly.

When we went to look for homeschooling textbooks at a fair for same, I'd say a good 90% of everything was religiously based. Apparently the publishers don't seem to think that anyone would home school a kid for non-religious reasons...

Oh, wow. D: I'm trying to picture a religious math textboo... oh, wait, I can picture it after all.

Fighting generalizations with elitist sweeping generalizations tends to not be the best way to make a point. elliemurray would have gotten a lot farther, and probably would have gained more support, if she hadn't pulled out her "public schooled people are plebeian rubes compared to home schoolers" card. Plus it wouldn't make me want to slap her upside her head with a trout.

Besides, being able to spell "magenta" and "cerulean" doesn't really mean much in the long run, not to mention there are plenty of literate people who can't spell worth shit.

There's a wholly different rant about people who really, really think it necessary to use the word cerulean waiting. I'd share my thoughts on yaoi, but then I'd feel the need to use an expletive every three words to express myself.

I think that all you have to do is look at the "quality" of fic at FFN to see the sort of "education" that public schools are churning out. Semi-literate snowflakes who bristle at the merest hint of criticism? Pretty much.

But are the home-schooled students any better? Clearly, the only solution to find out who is the most intelligent and settle this debate once and for all would be to have an Invader Zim fanfic face off.
