Grudgewank? In my Whoniverse? It's more likely than you think!
Hello hello! Long time lurker, first time poster etc. I originally posted this to SF_D on LJ when someone advised I should share it here! So that's what I'm doing! Apologies if you've had to read it twice...

This one is for the Whovians in the house. Be warned because its colour is strictly teal dear!

As any phule no, Steven Moffat has been named as the new producer of Doctor Who and the latest episode was set in a massive library world.
This makes Lawrence Miles a grumpy ol' bear!
Lawrence Miles is responsible for a few Doctor Who novels, some of them highly rated. Since the shows return, he has been EXTREMELY critical of its direction. The fact he's not on board as a writer is a total coincidence.

The grudgewank started a week ago when Miles posts in his blog that he wrote a tv script before christmas that was also set in a cosmic library. The entry referring to it has been bahleeted but the link is still active - http://davidjhowe.cogia.net/TheBookOfTheWorld.pdf (for what it's worth, it's a good script but wouldn't make a good episode of a TV series. There's flashes of brilliance but it feels very clichéd, barely any characterisation and the ending is a big deus ex machina).

Anyway Silence in the Library is shown and generally loved by all.

Miles unleashes the fucking fury!

Highlights:
"I'd assumed that he'd be like one of the idealistic personalities from Press Gang. In fact, he was like one of the twisted, neurotic ones."
"So obviously I prefer "The Book of the World". Not purely because I wrote it, but because I'll go for "world-building" above "cool" any day."
"Mummy Moffat didn't pay much attention to me."

Mmmm these grapes are deliciously bitter...

Yes! Doctor Who wank that has nothing to do with shipping - oh, blessed day.

"Moffat"! Somehow, I find it impossible to think of him as "Steven". I can comfortably refer to the man who dropped my manuscript down the back of a shelving-unit as "Gareth", or the man who gave us Donna Noble as "Big Russell", and yet… perhaps it's his snarling, predatory Scottishness, but Moffat's name is one that has to be snapped.

Predatory Scottishness? Well, that's one for interesting mental pictures...

I'm surprised Mad Larry hasn't shown up here before. I mean his rantings, though entertaining, aren't the sanest things about. He's got a regular following (half of which disagree with everything he says) every week on the Doctor Who Forum.

...This week's episode really seems to have brought on the crazy.

It becomes so worth the tl;dr when the paranoia starts to bloom as he talks about "Blink":

(again, Moffat appears terrified by the suggestion of nerdliness… I'll brush over the fact that the nerd in question is called "Lawrence" on this occasion).

Then the full flower of "Steven Moffat made me a near-alcoholic! A writer! A fandom outcast! A monster! Love me, Daddy!" Or the long version:

Indeed, he plied me with alco-pops at every opportunity, and has suggested on more than one occasion that he feels vaguely responsible for my subsequent near-alcoholism. I have my own opinions about who's responsible for what, but what if he's right? What if it's true? Apart from anything else, it's got to be said that if I hadn't been boozed up on the night of "The Unquiet Dead", then I probably would've responded with a finely-honed 3,000-word essay rather than the angst-burst that eventually ended up on the internet. The same could be said for numerous other turning-points in my recent life, not all of them so public. And if you go back further, then Press Gang must surely have been a key influence on me as a writer, if not on my seventeen-year-old self as a human being. This would make Steven Moffat more responsible for my existence, or at least the existence of the Lawrence Miles that everybody in fandom knows about, than anyone else still living. Dear God, what kind of monster has this man created? I'll say what I like about "Blink", he's got nobody to blame but himself. I'm home, dad!

I've been waiting for wank about Moffat taking over would make it here. Though looking at it I'm quite surprised that it took Miles this long to wank over last night's episode as it's been known for quite some time Moffat's episodes were set in a cosmic library.

Bloody hell, he likes to ramble. Get to the fucking point Lawrence!

I was thrilled when I found out Moffat was taking over, seeing as RTD is doing the "bring back old villains" thing to death (Daleks AGAIN?). I just hope Moffat doesn't go down the same path.

I like Star Wars because of its dynamism, its scope, its technique, its sheer artistry. Moffat likes Star Wars because Han Solo's dead cool and there's lots of sexy hardware.

I think the prequels proved who was right on this point of debate.

"To an extent, he's the Doctor Who version of Neil Gaiman, a writer who's prepared to contrive his storylines with near-clinical precision to make sure that (a) the right demographic groups are interested and (b) he gets to look like a rock star. This is probably the harshest thing I've said so far, since Gaiman is a stinking parasite who'll sink to any depths in his quest to make goth-girls cop off with him, and even Moffat isn't that desperate."

...What does Neil Gaiman have to do with anything, and has Neil kicked Lawrence's puppy? Or, indeed, copped off with his goth-girl?

I rather loved Nostalgia's comment on it all:

Just when you start thinking that the fandom has become like any other, ruled solely by girls on the internet fighting over ships, something like this happens and you remember that DW fandom has been wanking since the dawn of time and that our LJ BNFs are but mere sticklebacks in the great ocean of spooge. That the authors and the writers are themselves no above unleashing tl;dr epics about that one time Paul Cornell looked at them funny or how Justin Richards was acting out of OMG JELUS when he rejected that three-novel epic about the Doctor losing his favourite pair of mittens and going on a genocidal spree to get them back.* For all that LJ may bitch and call people mean things at least none of us has produced a fanzine aimed at bashing one person just because we disagree on Benny Summerfield.

Thank you, Mad Larry, for restoring my faith in Doctor Who fandom.

(*Note: It took me several more seconds than it should have to come up with something more batshit insane than what they actually published.)

I'll comment on the Wank itself when I have enough time to drink in its sheer deliciousness, but you, sir/madam, get mad points for the Molesworth reference. :D

Boobies for you!

I can't believe I read the whole thing.

I think he has a few good points buried in there (I have my own issues with Moffat) but as I continued to read the epic post, I became more convinced that, quite simply, there's something wrong with that guy.

He actually sounds like a sane guy with a sense of humour, at first, give or take the odd tangent about predatory Scottishness. But then the post goes on and he just seems to get pettier and pettier, until I'm wondering just when Moffat wizzed in this guy's coffee.

I mean, seriously. It goes from "entertaining childhood recollections" to "Moffat is mean and emotionally stunted and unfairly ignored me and I should be more famouser than him!" with nary a warning sign.
