FEDCON USA: Making Flanvention look Good
Fedcon USA has set a new bar for convention self destruction stupidity. Cancelling events in the middle of Saturday afternoon!

For convience here's a timeline of ill omens that lead up to yesterday's Britney Spears moment.

FEDCON GMBH a German group that puts on Trek Cons in Europe decides to work with Tim Brazeal at Trek United

Wait! The same Trek United that was supposed to be raising funds for another season of Enterprise? Yep the very same...

Despite this, everything seems to be going along fine, they even have Jonathan Frakes on as their headliner. Actually, No

Well, they'll have Adam Baldwin! Ummm...

This, and several other line up changes start making some of the forum members thinking something hinky is going on. Barbra, one of the Volunteers, even goes to say theres no conspiracy going on here.

A few days before the event they announce Aaron Douglas (Cheif Tyrol from New BSG) is joining the show! Only Aaron can't seem to get any of the organizers to get him his plane tickets Tom, the Security Chief, is playing damage control trying to keep everyting calm on the boards, but it's already getting out of hand. A very pissed off Aaron Douglas returns calling out the organizers on their lies. Tim Brazeal finally shows up with several half assed explinations Over the next few pages. Including the fact that he has back problems witch will all too conviently put him in the hospital for the next 24 hours! Aaron doesn't buy it. And the echange just gets more heated as things go on.

The con finally arrives, and the first day is small but fun for those who attend (most estimates put the number in the 200 range, far below their thousand or so they were hoping for) All of the Gold Ticket holders are thinking they are getting the shaft for putting up all that money before and and getting no real perks.

Then Saturday comes, and the show gets shut down at 11:00 am.

Wow, what a shocker, who thought anyone could make Flanvention look good...

ETA: Over at the Omega Sector we have a little comment by Virogen about how Tim Brazeal has been pulling crap like this for a while now...

ETA II: Scott Merritt of Pegasus Publishing has just announced: Because I can do it (and partially to mitigate my losses for the weekend) we will be producing a limited edition commemorative t-shirt that says “I got FRAKKED at F(crossed out)DedCon USA! anyone interested in obtaining one of these needs to contact me by Thur 6/19/08 as I’ll be printing and mailing them next weekend. My email is pegasushelp@gmail.com. Heck, I wasn't even there and I'm ordering one!

ETA III Trek United is starting to worry about it's future due to Tim Brazeal being the owner of the site. Amazingly there are people taht still want to believe in Tim.

ETA IV: Oh, Scott Merrit points out in the Con News comments this intersting tidbit about the downed forums:
As of this afternoon the Forums over at the FedConUSA site have been shut down. I find it suspicious that this occurred less than an hour after I posted the contact information for the Texas Attorney General’s Office with encouragement for fans who feel that they were ripped off to contact them.

So that's why the FenCon guy was posting in SF&F_Writers and SFWA that "Hey, FEDcon isn't us!" Yikes, talk about needing to do some damage control...

Wow, just... wow. I went to a first-year con this past April and while there were a few glitches it was overall a huge success. Everyone, guests and attendees alike, had a blast- most of the glitches were caused by the con outgrowing the hotel by the end of the weekend.

I can't even begin to imagine how upset people were at this one. Damn. And shame on the organizers.

Aaron Douglas said that he will send attendees an autographed picture if they send him a letter (and SASE) saying that they will never attend FedConUSA again.

I don't need a signed picture (have one already from Shore Leave), but I'm going to send him a letter saying how awesome he is for speaking up and calling the organizers on their bullshit.

The cons I always went to were about geeks gathering to do geek stuff, and the guests were a peripheral concern. I mean, it was groovy that they were there, but you didn't base your decision on going as to who the guests were, it based more on how many of your friends were going and if the venue was worth the trip.

*puzzled look* When did that change, exactly? When did these strange events spring up that were less about hanging with your geek peeps and more about Meeting Real Live Celebrities For A Price?

OK, this is a minor point, but it's bugging me because I work in medical records. The story is that Brazeal had a "lumbar epidural" and now has spinal fluid leaking into his body. I can only assume this means a lumbar epidural steroid injection which basically means they take a big syringe full of corticosteroids and lidocaine and inject it into the space between the vertebrae to relieve pain. I happen to be performing QA on a report of a lumbar epidural steroid injection right now, and one of the things they do before injecting is check for negative aspiration of spinal fluid. I'm not going to go so far as to say it's impossible that they hit the cord but as far as LEAKING SPINAL FLUID ALL OVER HIS INNARDS OMG.... um, when this happens (usually from a lumbar puncture and not from an epidural steroid injection), people get a murderous headache until the pressure equalizes and that's about it (I'm open to being wrong about this as it's anecdotal from my long experience working in medical records, but I'm about 95% sure I'm right).

Basically, the point of all that tl;dr about my job is that I think Brazeal is painting his minor procedure as more than it is, and if the spinal fluid complication is even real (which I doubt) he is exaggerating the symptoms for secondary gain. We call this malingering.

In other words, I think he's full of shit (see, now if only he had said he had a bowel obstruction - then it would have been closer to true).

This one doesn't make me feel much like mocking; I've run cons and I know how hard it can be to get it right, but even when things go wrong people can respect your integrity if you've actually made an effort. It sounds like this guy thought that all he had to do was advertise the thing and people would show up and make it a success.

Nope. That's not how it works.

I read through a lot of the tales of woe from people who had been there and just wanted to point out how many of them took the time to praise John Billingsley, Garrett Wang and others who did their best to entertain the fans in difficult circumstances. There was a lot of pain and misery reflected in their comments, but most knocked themselves out to thank the actors for helping all they could.

That, IMHO, speaks very well for disappointed fans and celebrities alike, and for fandom as a whole.

Shame there's always some gimboid who spoils it, though.

Both Aaron and James Callis (who plays Baltar) were booked for this back in April.

Here is a statement from James Callis: http://pub50.bravenet.com/forum/4256384660/fetch/637480/

FedConUSA also had booked Richard Hatch and from some of the posts on the board, they were still saying on Friday night that he would be attending but was having flight problems. Mexichick (the significant other of BSG writer/producer Bradley Thompsan) posted over on the scifi.com board that his flight "problem" was the same as Aaron's and James': no ticket. http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2309918&hl=fedconusa

I was at Con.txt this weekend! It went off without a hitch and full of win! So there, FedCon people! Though there was a bit of schadenfreude RE: the dealers who ditched Con.txt to go to Texas.

Oh wow, that's some terrible backpedaling on the organizer's part. Why oh why do people keep acting as if conventions are easy to run?? Or that they are all automatically going to become cash cows, especially in the first few years?? D:
