sweet bippy?!?
I don't know if there are any Fandoms That Shall Not Be Wanked...but I haven't seen this one around here. I don't know if there's a reason for that - if so, let me know and I shall bow out gracefully. Well...at least try to. ;P

Stargate SG-1 - there's a blog entry from a production team member, which seems to boil down to "Why aren't you all watching? If the episodes keep rating as badly as the last, we might just take our show and leave, thankyouverymuch. *wangst*".

I was pointed to this by a friend - I'm not part of the fandom at all, and don't really know what's going on in it, so I just picked the wankiest bits of this kerfuffle I could find.

Why were the ratings on the last episode low? Everyone weighs in with theories:

It's because you've alienated all the OneTrueFans in America!!!

"You mean that *Big TVGuide article* that pretty much said European fans are more responsible for the popularity of the show than the American fans who have watched the show since day one and spent their hard earned money getting and keeping Showtime just to continue to support SG-1 in those early years? Americans who were back then and even now continue to be the frontline first run audience for this show?

Why would that make the fans turn away from the show in droves and figure why watch if they really aren't making any important contribution to the show's popularity and success and that first line of viewership loyality isn't going to get one bit of mention or recognition in an American publication for an article abou the show. But what do I know, after all I'm not one of those European fans..I'm just one of those *loyal since day one* American viewers."

It's because the show makes me nauseous!

"You mentioned, wistfully, that some show got to use a handheld camera for a lot of shots, and that you'd like to go for more of it. Er.. just to say that viewers with an inner ear problem --like myself -- HATE the handheld stuff. It tends to make us very nauseous. Something of a ratings loser ..."

It's because you're before your time!

"Remember, the Original Star Trek series didn't do well in the ratings either."

Someone made too many fart jokes on the DVD!

"OTOH, I am now so pissed off with Peter De Luis' commentaries that I can't listen to them. To clarify -- I love his acting, I love his writing, I love his directing, and I am very impressed with him as a person after having the luck to meet and talk with him at some length -- do I care about toilets and colons and farts and so forth? In the context of wanting to listen to a commentary on the making of a Stargate episode, you can bet your sweet bippy I don't."

It's because of an act of God!

"I don't know about the rest of the country, but we were having some severe thunderstorms at the time of the first viewing."

It's teh eval video games (well, they're responsible for everything these days)!

"and you know, when you get a good game of Warcraft 3 going while you're waiting for Stargate, sometimes you forget."

Then the different segments of the fandom start going at each other:

"My, we have a lot of SamJack Horsewomen feeding back to Mr. Tichenor this evening."

"My, we had a lot of people from OurStargate who are pushing their agenda on JT post here today..."

"Welcome to the fandom war, Mr. Tichenor."

And lastly, perhaps it's better to leave all fans in the dark.

"Keep it really subtle and don't gratouisly annoy any segment of the fandom -- or please have your production people attend marketing 100 -- keep the customer at least confused and maybe they'll tune in next week."

For myself, I haven't been a regular viewer in a long time because 1) I didn't have satellite hookup in my room, and 2) Daniel was off the show, and without Daniel I was not as interested in conveying myself from my room to a room with satellite hookup.
Now, I have a hookup in my room, and Daniel's back on the show. And yet, still I do not watch. Why? Got out of the habit, mostly. I still catch it on if I think to, but without Farscape to draw me, I'm more likely to maybe watch Tremors and then go surfing for a movie.

Well, in fairness, only things like the Jafah masks are lower budget, looking like big clunky things instead of smooth CG and animatronics... most of the series' FX are pretty danged good, and if it looks really low-budget in the first handful of episodes, well, it's not really fair to judge a series' look from those.
(I mean, look at Star Trek:TNG's first season. Ugh.)

Yeah. The Jafah masks you saw that *clunk* open are really the worst effect on the show. Everything else is good, and the writing is REALLY good, there's a great dynamic between the characters.

I've never even seen the show, but this leaves me slack-jawed.

Okay, did I miss something? I thought people watched shows because they liked the shows. Wow, what kind of idiot am I!?

And the part about expecting recognition for watching a show just... wow. Just...

...wow.

That whole sentence of hers made me feel short of breath, actually - my brain was definitely feeling dizzy by the end of it.

But yeah...I must have missed the memo that said we're all supposed to know that WE are the SAVIOURS of Fandom, and should get recognition for our devoted watching...*rolls eyes*

You're silly. People don't watch shows for that. People watch shows so they can see nonexistant homosexual innuendo between attractive males, whereupon they can write oodles and oodles of slash fic about them.

I mean, duh.

That'd fall under "liking the show" in my pervy little book.

I don't get how watching a show is turned into some sort of martyrdom. "I WORKED and I SLAVED for you, sitting for HOURS and HOURS, and what do I get?!"

I lost my sweet bippy in a poker game in Vegas, circa '98.

So I no longer have a sweet bippy to bet.

Stargate (warning Will Robinson, personal opinion rearing it's ugly bed head) is just really boring and after Farscape was cancelled people stopped tuning in because *damn* it's just not worth it for a stay-in on a Friday night? ::raises hand::

Geeks have lives too.

Ok that's a lie...Geeks have photoshop that takes up ungodly amounts of time...

There we go.

SG-1 rocked. Note, I use this in the past tense.

Once the second half of season 6 started, though, it's like it took a dive headfirst off the Quality Bridge. They just ... gave up. Kind of depressing, really.

Hell, they even brought a dead character back because the fans were whining. And let us not even speak of the clipshow episode...

The phrase "clip show" always sounds like something Grampa used to sneak out of the house for.

why aren't people watching sg1? hmmm, let's ask an embittered late-to-the-party fangirl who just discovered the first 3 seasons on DVD a month ago, shall we?

maybe because it started to SUCK. then stopped. then STARTED AGAIN.
maybe because the producers became passive-aggressive snots who would say things like, "hey, if you the viewers don't want to watch anymore..."
maybe because the headliner decided he didn't want to play anymore but refused to actually make a damn decision and quit, instead fucking up the dynamics for everyone.

whooooooooooo knows. these things are such a mystery.
