God I mostly don't mind as long as I'm warned ahead of time so I can not read their fics. But this rant got inspired by getting to the second chapter of a fic and having a surpise Zolo slapped into my face and I did not like it. I did not like it at all.

Isn't Japanese one of those language where, if you romanise a word, the r and l are kinda interexchangable? Meaning that Zolo is also valid?

Hell, true fans better start calling him ゾロ, and if you can't read kana, than learn (and install the Japanese Language support on your computer). </sarcasm>

(Is it just me or if a fansubber or scanlator transliterated it as 'Zolo', rather than the licensed dubbing/publishing company, then we'd be getting the 'Zolo is just as valid as Zoro' argument from the purists?)

This makes me glad that the D Gray Man fandom isn't nearly as retarded about names as some of the other fandoms. One character has four different possible spellings for his name. FOUR. Can you imagine the wars over that if anyone took themselves too seriously?

Man, are they still wanking about the Zolo thing? They've been wanking about it two years ago.

For the record, unless the character's name actually means something *coughAlucardcough* they could rename Susy and Tommy fgor all I care. Sometimes I don't use the Japanese name only because the dub one is so much better. *points to icon*

Oh, you beat me to posting this. Ugh, R and L are the SAME DAMN THING in Japanese, so there's really no difference! (Unless you're the Zorro copyright people which is apparently why it was changed in the first place).

Look, I like Riza Hawkeye. I like her name as Riza Hawkeye, but I'll still read fics that call her Liza, Risa, Lisa and Elizabeth. Why? Because it's the damn fic I care about, not the spelling.

In some cases I even purposely use the unofficial translations over the official ones because I think the original ones are stupid. Olivier Armstrong? No, I'll keep using Olivia thanks. And Glacier is a really stupid name for a housewife, Gracia is much much prettier.

But I will read fics that use the translations I don't like and just mentally correct the spelling. Why can't this ranter do the same?

But sadly, the part that made me lolol the most was this, from [info]saiyako:

Changing characters' names from the original source is always serious. And it's just as offensive - no, even more offensive - to me than Mary Sues, bad grammar and omission of capital letters. Names matter, they aren't just a random collection of letters and sounds slapped onto a character - the author always chooses that name for a reason, whether it's a really deep, philosophical meaning or just "I like the way that sounds/looks, and it just feels right for him/her". It's a really important part of the character, and I despise people who think arbitrarily changing names in translation is anything but detestable.

Personally, I don't bitch about it when I see people using the L spelling instead of the R, because I DO understand that fans are working with different source material, but somehow it does rub me the wrong way when someone tries to correct me with, "Uh, isn't his name ZOLO?"

Must be the inner elitist fanbrat thing that I'm still trying to tamp down, or something. I'm not proud of that. Yet I can't help but feel that there's totally got to be some sort of fan protocol name-usage... priority.. outline thing. I'm only half kidding -_- Like:

Most common usage (at internat'l/local levels) > original authorial intent (name-puns, existing character reference) > actual pronunciation (if different) OR language-reliant renaming (if applicable) > etc

..in the sense that for me, assuming we're dealing with the way something would be written in the English language:
Piccolo (common) > Piccolo (authorial intent--doesn't matter in this case though) > Piccoro (Jp). Or uh, I dunno, Petit-Coeur (Fr). Or Bulma vs Buruma- OH MY GOD WHY THE FUCK AM I STILL TALKING ABOUT THIS. DISREGARD, I SUCK COCKS, ETC.

Oh for Christ's sake, it's not like the fandom's even big enough for this to be such a pain in the ass. I've probably read four fic out of, I dunno, 100 that use Zolo instead of Zoro. Magically, the sky still hasn't fallen to the earth because of it.
