a deep sense of self-satisfaction ([info]snuh) wrote in [info]fandom_wank,

When the hell did a great community like marysues turn into wank central? Between the recently wanked Harry Potter is a Sue!, Tolkien's elves are Sues! (Hello? Feanor?) and Quit seeing Sues everywhere! it's quite entertaining.

Otters!

Squee!

As for the Mary-Sue community, sounds like they could find a Mary-Sue in everything if they looked hard enough.

Aren't they adorable? Got it from the iconaddicts community.

They're off a bit. Elves are bloody perfect, but Faramir and Beren are Tolkien's Mary Sues.

Which is why I preferred Jackson's Faramir to Tolkien's. It had absolutely nothing to do with David Wenham. Really.

heh. The remind me of DL with their: No! They're everywhere, and they're out to get us!

Frankly I'm suprised at the time it took for them to work out that yes, many main characters do show signs of being Mary Sues, that's why they're main characters in best selling books, not reports for parliament.

The real trouble with elves is that there are 3 types of them. Not in the sense of the dark elves, the Vanyarin elves etc. but the books. The elves in Lotr are quite different from the elves in The Silmarillian and those elves are so different from the ones in The Hobbit that if they weren't both written by the same guy you'd never know they were the same thing.

I used to dislike the elves for their flat, one dimensional, perfect characters until I read TS and Unfinished Tales. Now I love them, because they have flaws. An aspect which on the whole is sadly lacking in Lotr. (Although it has it's moments.)

Ah! This has gotten to serious, meta wank! *jams a tinfoil hat on her head* ELFES ADN HARRY POOTER R VRERY HAWT!!!!1111

After the three thousandth rendition of "I'm writing a novel, can you tell me if my characters are Mary Sues?", I simply defriended them.

And to think, once they were snarky and amusing. *snif for the good old days*

I blame myself. I used to post a snarky review almost every day.

I defriended, too, but one of the last things I read on there was a post by a girl asking if her fic about herself and Orlando Bloom was a Mary Sue fic. And then people answered and said it wasn't.

I think I may too. Between that and the "Oh, look, here's my Mary Sue that I wrote in sixth grade, I'm really only posting it here to mock and have no ulterior ego-stroking motives AT ALL" posts, there don't seem to be many actual Mary Sues left.

And I know damn well they haven't wanked them all, because the LotR fandom alone could keep a group like that busy until the Last Trump.

What drove me away were all the postings about obscure fandoms. Attack of the Bug-Eyed Anime Clones From Hell got really old. Or I'm really old and out of touch, whichever.

I can make fun of Mary Sues on my own much better, without all the distractions. *G*

Ode for Mary Sue
[info]backfromspace
2003-03-23 01:05 am UTC (link)
I've got hair the color of burnished gold
Both my parents died before I was very old
I wear perfect makeup at all times of the day
Everyone always agrees to do things my way

Rules don't apply to me
Try to hit me and then you'll see
Bad guys can't seem to resist my allure
I'll seduce you all, of that I'm sure.

Got a pair of good-looking guys?
I'll hook 'em up just to give my reviews a rise.
I'm so good looking not only can I make them gay
But I can do the nasty with 'em the hetero way

My eyes are green like a sparkling sapphires
Everyone I see always admires
On top of that they're bewitching too,
I can beat the bad guys without even using my kund fu!

You got a problem, hey, I'm there
Canon and casual readers beware
Sex an' romance and lots of squick
If you ain't attractive you ain't in my fic.

It's become a matter of skimming through all the vanity posts to find the snark, yes. But it's still worth it for the occaisional beautiful snark.

We just need to work harder, and drown out all the RPG posts and lectures on characeterisation.

I miss the snark. I mean, I joined for the snark. WHERE HAS ALL THE SNARK GONE?

I need to dump my poor self into Utena fanfiction or something, because there HAVE to be some doozies of Utena Sues.

Well, all Ayla has done is create just about everyfuckingthing while having hot!sex with Jondalar.

Are you sure she's as much of a Mary (Gary) Stu as Feanor? He's an Elf, ya know.
