The aftermath of "Breaking Dawn"
We are falling behind on the Sparkledammerung, you guys. Previously: Twilight had its own Carpet Book. Fresh off the truck:

>> Don't Burn It, Return It!

Just got back from Borders, where they took back my book with no problem. Got into a discussion with the cashier about how I was the 15th (!!!) person to bring my book back today. Seems like many customers felt that SM was not true to her characters and her self created Twilight world, and are calling foul.
(See also: Half.com's BD listing; more anecdata at iworkatborders and ONTD).

>> Two new communities are up, mmmcradle (specifically protesting Jacob/Nessie) and whysofailsmeyer, and those are just the ones I know of.

>> Epic ONTD post is epic, complete with macros and Dark Knight rewrites (ALFREDS EYES WERE A BUTTERY, BURNING GOLD; HIS PERFECT FACE ALMOST SEVERE WITH THE DEPTH OF HIS EMOTION AS HE STARED INTO MY EYES AND SHOUTED "NEVAH").

I hear the Twilight Moms board is supposed to open back up today (apparently Stephenie Meyer asked her fan boards to go on hiatus prior to the book release...?), so that should be interesting. ETA: The Twilight Moms loved it! Bless. ETA 2: ... And so it begins. ETA 3: And continues! ETA 4: NO DISSENT!

ETA 5: It was a social experiment test, Twihards, and you failed it! Also: Godwin's. Also-also: She couldn't have been referencing Lolita... could she?

ETA 6: OH SHI--

ETA 7: Alleged MySpace defriending by the author!

ETA 8: A new letter-writing campaign: EDIT MOAR; a J/B shipper decides to rewrite the book.

By the way, you guys, if something else happens, feel free to post a new entry. I'll be over here battening down the LJ hatches.

ETA 9: Seriously, people, there is some fantastic wank linked in the comments now. SOMEONE ELSE TAKE A TURN ON THE CAROUSEL.

I don't know whether to call this wanky or just wacky, but:

There's a poll thread that has apparently been mod-edited to say "not what I was expecting" instead of "hated it." There's one angry response to the modification from "twilightmum":
"what? we're not allowed to view that we didn't like the book? i don't want my vote to be changed to "not what i was expecting"...that's not it at all! i truly did not like it. that is what i want my vote to read."

There are other people who say they're disappointed in the book but no one's getting up in arms about the mod edit, yet anyways.

Ha.

Moderator Edit: Poll topics edited. This is a non bashing site.

If you don't like the book, you are bashing it!

HA! Now we're cooking with gas. In the 28th page of the "what did you think" thread we have pixievamp_08 (emphasis mine)

"Leesa, I understand where you're coming from. Somehow, I was able to start enjoying the book when I was really throw for a loop initially. Some of the previous posts on this thread however have been really discouraging and if SM were to read them, I think she may feel like the fandom she created is falling apart at the seams. That makes me sad. I can't help but continue to support her and the Twilight series, regardless of how fantastically it ended. I still wanna read midnight sun and see every single one of the books made into films and I feel like some of the previous posts on here demonstrate people abandoning what they once loved so much. I read a blog about the book that discussed some of the negativity the book was receiving and they said something to the effect of "Let's not forget what made us fall in love with Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse, and what made us wait in line all night for Breaking Dawn." "

We also have this thread which seems to have been referred to the poll thread I mentioned above. The mods are going well out of their way to stifle pretty much anything but very tempered negativity.

here's an interesting exchange

I'd say the best shit has yet to go down. I haven't even reached the end of the "what do you think" thread.

Hells, julian_black was right. There's more and more negativity showing up in the thread. I'm starting to cap negative posts to see if they get edited, just for lulz.

Yes, I am this desperate to avoid real work.

Best hits: Nice big type there, unless it's been edited

"I really cannot believe that Little Brown published this book. Best sales they ever had, but I'm sure with more dissappointment from the readers than ever before." or so it says as I type this.

This one won't be edited I'm sure, but: An inspirational message to us all!

Well, I called one of them. If you click the first link you see a mod-edited post.

The original had one extra statement. In big type. See if you can figure it out.

Good work! Have a cookie.

I couldn't believe it when I saw the edited text. That's just beyond the pale. It's one thing to tell people they can't express their dislike, but it's something different to edit what people said. Warning people and tossing them out of the forum if they don't comply is much more honest and less creepy.

Wow, and I thought the grannies on the Josh Groban forums were the scariest Stepford Fans.

I almost miss the Grobanites, they had some good batshit crazy that went down on the boards. Especially FoJG (in fact FoJG had better stuff because it was locked only to paying members).

I would hope that a mother of three wouldn't be that much of a delicate flower.

Especially after the sandblasting the Amazon forums did to her ego. If that didn't toughen her up, nothing will.

Anyway, recognizing that "the fandom she created is falling apart at the seams" would be a GOOD thing. The alternative is to crawl into a cave and kick it LKH-style, with her hands over her eyes and a chorus of minions drowning out all other sound with an eternal repeat of, "LA LA LA EVERYONE STILL LOVES YOUUUUU, CHANGE NOTHING, LA LA LA!"

Considering Meyer has admitted she could barely function when her three boys had ear infections, she just may be. I know parents worry when their kids are sick, but that just seems like an extreme reaction to a typical childhood illness.

Couldn't function as in "there aren't enough hours in the day to take care of three sick boys, when was the last time I slept"? Or as in "my three darling boys are in pain, WOE"? Because if the latter, dude, you're the parent, suck it up and deal.
