The aftermath of "Breaking Dawn"
We are falling behind on the Sparkledammerung, you guys. Previously: Twilight had its own Carpet Book. Fresh off the truck:

>> Don't Burn It, Return It!

Just got back from Borders, where they took back my book with no problem. Got into a discussion with the cashier about how I was the 15th (!!!) person to bring my book back today. Seems like many customers felt that SM was not true to her characters and her self created Twilight world, and are calling foul.
(See also: Half.com's BD listing; more anecdata at iworkatborders and ONTD).

>> Two new communities are up, mmmcradle (specifically protesting Jacob/Nessie) and whysofailsmeyer, and those are just the ones I know of.

>> Epic ONTD post is epic, complete with macros and Dark Knight rewrites (ALFREDS EYES WERE A BUTTERY, BURNING GOLD; HIS PERFECT FACE ALMOST SEVERE WITH THE DEPTH OF HIS EMOTION AS HE STARED INTO MY EYES AND SHOUTED "NEVAH").

I hear the Twilight Moms board is supposed to open back up today (apparently Stephenie Meyer asked her fan boards to go on hiatus prior to the book release...?), so that should be interesting. ETA: The Twilight Moms loved it! Bless. ETA 2: ... And so it begins. ETA 3: And continues! ETA 4: NO DISSENT!

ETA 5: It was a social experiment test, Twihards, and you failed it! Also: Godwin's. Also-also: She couldn't have been referencing Lolita... could she?

ETA 6: OH SHI--

ETA 7: Alleged MySpace defriending by the author!

ETA 8: A new letter-writing campaign: EDIT MOAR; a J/B shipper decides to rewrite the book.

By the way, you guys, if something else happens, feel free to post a new entry. I'll be over here battening down the LJ hatches.

ETA 9: Seriously, people, there is some fantastic wank linked in the comments now. SOMEONE ELSE TAKE A TURN ON THE CAROUSEL.

If the Cult of Nice ran the world...
[info]julian_black
2008-08-05 05:21 am UTC (link)
The TwilightMoms forums now has a thread entitled (rather diplomatically, I think) "For those who aren't so pleased."

The expression sof displeasure are remarkably even-handed, and nobody's ripping SMeyer a new one. But of course, a mod takes it upon herself to step in and sets those ungrateful hussies the disappointed fans straight on just how little dissent will be tolerated at the from the SMeyer BD Lovefest
Andie: **Moderator Note** This is NOT in response to anything that has been said so far on this thread. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That being said, I know that it can quickly turn into bashing of characters, Steph and/or of other TM's. This is simply a reminder to anyone posting here or anyplace on TM of our rules, that we are a FAN based site at heart, and that we want TM to be a fun place were everyone can express their opinions and not be attacked.
Riiight. Part of the community rules quoted includes:
BE NICE! DON’T BE EASILY OFFENDED. DON’T BASH OTHERS! Speak kind words to each other. Keep this forum a positive and fun place for moms to come and interact and make friendships.
The comments continue apace, and many of the posters have valid points. The participants are also following the rules, as far as I can see; there are a few expressions of outright dismay, but nobody's doing anything that could remotely be considered "bashing" (or maybe I've just been reading ontd_twatlight and the Amazon forums too much).

Still, on page 4, another mod cracks her whip and issues another warning:
Lisa314:Ladies, and gentlmen: first let me begin by saying that I do not want to delete this thread; it will stay here because I believe you have the right to express your views about Breaking Dawn, good or bad. What I am going to ask of you is to please, please, please do not bash the book or I will have no choice but to lock it. There are two way to convey the same point: the acceptable way and the unacceptable way. Example:

Acceptable: I did not like this book. I felt the direction that SM took it in was disappointing to me because of .............etc

Unacceptable: I hated this book, it was the worst book ever, did she have rocks in her head when she wrote etc.

Please everyone, as adults can we remember that people have feelings and our words can often be as damaging as our actions.
In other words, STFU BITCHES! RESPECT MAH AUTHORITEH!

There are a few dissenting posts, rightly taking the mods to task for being too heavy-handed. There is a perfectly sensible proposal that the discussion be taken elsewhere, away from TwilightMoms.

And now the thread is locked, with no further comment from the mods.

So yeah--on the TwiMoms forums, "everyone can express their opinions and not be attacked." But if you express the wrong opinion, however civilly, and however separate from the main discussion, they can sure as hell be silenced.

I was busily following the twimoms earlier but eventually I just couldn't stand the fawning over Smeyer and complete intolerance of any less-than-wholly-positive review that wasn't couched in a paragraph and a half of affection for the earlier books in the series.

Christ. These people creep the hell out of me, and I don't have any whiskey. This is not a good situation.

(Reposting because keyboards are complicated.)

Those forums honestly creep me out a little. The passive-aggressive tone, the Cult of Stepheny, the badly-photoshopped sigs, and those mods... yick. It's like watching June Cleaver get her freak on -- sweetly, demurely, and with a little bottle of strychnine to sweeten up your tea.

It's weird. I'm so used to fandom having this sense of anarchy about it, seeing something so... regimented is really skeeving me out. I would have had a problem with a mod changing my 'I hated this book' to 'I didn't like this book' (No, I didn't just dislike it, I HATED it). I don't know how they've managed to go this long without a major forum schism just from people disagreeing with the mod clique.

I really want to know how they'd react to something like 4chan. Because the Twimoms are practically the exact opposite of 4chan. Twimoms expect niceness, order, and reasonablenesss, and agreement, and to top it off they are female. Whereas anonymous is contrary for the sake of being contrary, anarchist, and doesn't believe in girls on the internet.

Do the Twimoms participate in other fandoms? I could see them accepting this kind of conformity if they were basically a feral fandom of much older fans. Without the cheerfully profane hordes of seasoned fans showing them how it's done, it would make perfect sense to them to transfer their RL culture wholesale to the Internet.

And I've thought about making a few posts that sound reasonably sane at first, then gradually getting more weird and fanatical and cracktastic in an ever-widening gyre of chaos and batshit and lulz, just to see how long it takes before someone steps in and says, "Bitch, you crazy."
