The aftermath of "Breaking Dawn"
We are falling behind on the Sparkledammerung, you guys. Previously: Twilight had its own Carpet Book. Fresh off the truck:

>> Don't Burn It, Return It!

Just got back from Borders, where they took back my book with no problem. Got into a discussion with the cashier about how I was the 15th (!!!) person to bring my book back today. Seems like many customers felt that SM was not true to her characters and her self created Twilight world, and are calling foul.
(See also: Half.com's BD listing; more anecdata at iworkatborders and ONTD).

>> Two new communities are up, mmmcradle (specifically protesting Jacob/Nessie) and whysofailsmeyer, and those are just the ones I know of.

>> Epic ONTD post is epic, complete with macros and Dark Knight rewrites (ALFREDS EYES WERE A BUTTERY, BURNING GOLD; HIS PERFECT FACE ALMOST SEVERE WITH THE DEPTH OF HIS EMOTION AS HE STARED INTO MY EYES AND SHOUTED "NEVAH").

I hear the Twilight Moms board is supposed to open back up today (apparently Stephenie Meyer asked her fan boards to go on hiatus prior to the book release...?), so that should be interesting. ETA: The Twilight Moms loved it! Bless. ETA 2: ... And so it begins. ETA 3: And continues! ETA 4: NO DISSENT!

ETA 5: It was a social experiment test, Twihards, and you failed it! Also: Godwin's. Also-also: She couldn't have been referencing Lolita... could she?

ETA 6: OH SHI--

ETA 7: Alleged MySpace defriending by the author!

ETA 8: A new letter-writing campaign: EDIT MOAR; a J/B shipper decides to rewrite the book.

By the way, you guys, if something else happens, feel free to post a new entry. I'll be over here battening down the LJ hatches.

ETA 9: Seriously, people, there is some fantastic wank linked in the comments now. SOMEONE ELSE TAKE A TURN ON THE CAROUSEL.

So, I don't know if anyone else has pinged this, or if my brain is working overtime, but ...

Everything I know about these books I learned from f_w and [info]cleolinda. One thing that caught my eye as I was wading through the summaries was the references to the imprinted werewolf pair Quil and Claire.

Anyone else read about that and immediately think of Humbert Humbert's rival Clare Quilty in Lolita?

Oh my God, I knew those names were bothering me for some reason. If that's a deliberate allusion, I want a shower.

So... reckon Meyer's read Lolita?

If she did .... talk about missing the point.

I'm trying now to tell myself that it was some kind of awful coincidence, as the alternatives are sort of depressing.

*may need a Silkwood shower for this*

"Silkwood shower"? As in nuclear decontamination?

Man, I need to remember that phrase; I'm sure I'll need it sometime.

Oh god, that is completely awesome.

I am unsure whether or not I think SMeyer has read that book. (She should, it's a great book. Except I don't think her powers of literary analysis are exactly up to it.)

It would be kind of crazy awesome if that were actually where the name came from. That would mean that all of the squickiness --- the imprinting, the Rosemary's baby, all of it --- that it was intentional, badfic on an epic scale. Twilight could be the first book series genuinely written for the lulz.

Now, again, all I know about Twilight I learned on Fandom Wank, but -- yes, but one-sided and sometimes with children. Then you kind of get to grow your own, you know?

Crazy. Bitch.

From what I got, the guy sees the girl and decides she's the one for him and does something magical that makes him care only about her. In the young'n cases he starts off like a brother/father figure, then a friend, then possibly a lover. Smeyer has a character say that it usually turns into lover because that's how girls respond to all that attention.
