The aftermath of "Breaking Dawn"
We are falling behind on the Sparkledammerung, you guys. Previously: Twilight had its own Carpet Book. Fresh off the truck:

>> Don't Burn It, Return It!

Just got back from Borders, where they took back my book with no problem. Got into a discussion with the cashier about how I was the 15th (!!!) person to bring my book back today. Seems like many customers felt that SM was not true to her characters and her self created Twilight world, and are calling foul.
(See also: Half.com's BD listing; more anecdata at iworkatborders and ONTD).

>> Two new communities are up, mmmcradle (specifically protesting Jacob/Nessie) and whysofailsmeyer, and those are just the ones I know of.

>> Epic ONTD post is epic, complete with macros and Dark Knight rewrites (ALFREDS EYES WERE A BUTTERY, BURNING GOLD; HIS PERFECT FACE ALMOST SEVERE WITH THE DEPTH OF HIS EMOTION AS HE STARED INTO MY EYES AND SHOUTED "NEVAH").

I hear the Twilight Moms board is supposed to open back up today (apparently Stephenie Meyer asked her fan boards to go on hiatus prior to the book release...?), so that should be interesting. ETA: The Twilight Moms loved it! Bless. ETA 2: ... And so it begins. ETA 3: And continues! ETA 4: NO DISSENT!

ETA 5: It was a social experiment test, Twihards, and you failed it! Also: Godwin's. Also-also: She couldn't have been referencing Lolita... could she?

ETA 6: OH SHI--

ETA 7: Alleged MySpace defriending by the author!

ETA 8: A new letter-writing campaign: EDIT MOAR; a J/B shipper decides to rewrite the book.

By the way, you guys, if something else happens, feel free to post a new entry. I'll be over here battening down the LJ hatches.

ETA 9: Seriously, people, there is some fantastic wank linked in the comments now. SOMEONE ELSE TAKE A TURN ON THE CAROUSEL.

And now people are discussing not just returning the books but writing to Little Brown to show their disatisfaction (not just about the story, but the editing (or lack thereof).

Oh please tell me someone is planning to red-pen the book and send it back to Little Brown with a handwritten note saying 'editors, motherfucker, have you got them?'...

Or, for those who could live with the first three books but were rightly horrified by BD, "I am sick and tired of this motherfucking fail in my motherfucking fandom."

Personally I think it's all fail. The concept was potentially brilliant but it should have been given to a ghost-writer who didn't have issues or agendas, because the author seems to have plenty of both.

Sure I don't know anything about the books other than what F_W has taught me, but I really think Tuck Everlasting did it better.

In the interests of proving myself anal-retentive and socially incompetent, may I note that should read "Copyeditors..."?

Editors buy books and suggest larger-scale changes to the author. They no longer check a book's SPAG personally.

I really love this comment further down in the thread.

lets see YOU write a book R. Templet!! it was a GREAT book, who cares about typo's and gramatical errors.....it's a flippin 756 pager!! the editor isn't gonna catch every mistake. my goodness people simmer down a little bit!

Yeah, who cares about typos and grammatical errors in a book being sold to thousands of people around the world?

I love the theory that it's okay if the editors don't do their jobs because the book is SOOO LONG....

What - you didn't know that editors are only obligated to read and edit the first three hundred pages of a novel?

...Which it isn't, because it's printed in special YA-o-type. It's a little over 130,000 pages, which is 450-550 pages in adult type--long, but not epically so.

Personally I'm charmed by the idea that the editor couldn't be expected to wade through all that verbiage to catch the biggest mistake of all, the PLOT.

But once again, why is this bothering them now? There are numerous errors in the earlier books as well. But of course this is the WORST BOOK EVAR OMG!

Exhibit A: The first book includes the phrase "dust moats." I still can't get over that.

I think this one just had even more errors than the previous three. One example is of Charlie going from eating pancakes to eating cereal (with no change explanation) on the same page.

*LOL!* maybe Charlie has a big appetite?

...and now i sort of want pancakes followed by cereal.

I did too, until I bought the hardback and saw it again (DON'T YOU JUDGE ME!). Also--and I get no sympathy for this, since it's wrong but still pretty common usage--"free reign" drives me OUT OF MY EVERLOVING MIND.
