Sparkledammerung: The Continuation
Since [info]cleolinda has had more than enough Twilight, it seems, I thought I'd take her up on her offer to move the growing wank to a new post.

Previously, on the Sparkledammerug: People weren't happy.

Entertainment Weekly, previously best known in the Twilight fandom for its extensive coverage of the hype and for this monstrosity of a cover, reviewed Breaking Dawn in the issue released today. The overall grade was a D.

The review was posted to [info]lion_lamb, the Edward/Bella comm. Commenters quickly divide on the issue: some agree with the review, some find it "too harsh," and some think EW missed the point entirely.

A few hours later, this interview with Stephenie Meyer is posted.

EW: Fan reaction to Breaking Dawn has been wild in both directions - they have been like "I love this book" and some people were like "I have questions about this book" Why do you think that is?

SMeyer: Well, I've actually named it the "Rob Effect." For some reason, it seems like the fans take a couple days to get used to something. And it was most obvious when they announced who was gonna be playing Edward and everyone freaked out, and there was all this online controversy and now everyone completely loves Rob. So, I knew that it was gonna be an interesting ride for a lot of people, they had their idea of what was going to happen, and if the book didn't match up they were gonna have a problem with that, and of course the book didn't match up to what everyone imagined, so I was expecting. And I'm hoping that after they have a chance to think about the ending I wrote, it'll grow on them.

Most fans roll their eyes at SMeyer, and others agree that the "haters" will probably love the books in a few weeks. Unfortunately, this mod post prompted comments to be disabled, but this exchange was saved (thank you, [info]greenconverses!):

vip4321: People, it's HER BOOK. She will write it however she likes it and if you have a problem, DONT SAY ANYTHING. Frankly, nobody cares. I like the book and so do a lot of people.

poetrytoprose: Please don't be so condescending and generalizing. It really hurts my brain when any criticism towards the book degrades any fan to anything less than "a true fan."

vip4321: Oh so you think being a true fan means putting the author and her work down? Wow, what's with the world? I know people are entitled to their own opinion and congrats to them, but im just so tired of all the SM, BD and Robert bashing. It's about time to get over it. Seriously. Don't you agree? All this negativity over stuff you can't change is stupid.

Most of the deleted comments were along those lines, with the mods vainly trying to tell everyone to be respectful.

[info]lion_lamb isn't the only place where the wank is, though.

SMeyer tells MTV.com that the backlash "hurts." Most comments run along the lines of "LEAVE STEPHENIE ALONE!!!!"

The Twilight Lexicon takes a position on BD, and disallow character-bashing, expressing disapproval at SMeyer's writing, and calling Jacob a pedophile.

And if you're tired of the wank, have an extended Twilight parody in which Edward is turned into a cranky, scrapbooking virgin?

It's going to be a long August.

EDIT THE FIRST: Nora Roberts smash!

EDIT THE SECOND: Dissapointed 'Breaking Dawn' fans organize protest. Twilighters in the comments claim that the haters only make up 10% of the reader base.

EDIT THE THIRD: The Twilight Lexicon is hacked! EDIT THE THREE-POINT-FIFTH: One of the Lexicon mods posts about it on her journal. Is the Lexicon no more? ETC: Screencaps of a troll post made to the Lex shortly before the hacking. ETC THE RECKONING: The hacker speaks? ETA SQUARED: Lexicon admin claims it's not an inside job, posts messages from the hacker. ARE YOU KIDDING ME: And the hacker speaks again! (deleted) THIS DESERVES ITS OWN POST: Amazon.com boards on the hacking, with a surprise guest appearance by Laurel K. Hamilton's personal assistant?

EDIT THE FOURTH: ... off-topic, but were we just deleted for a bit?

EDIT THE FIFTH: Twilight Moms have possibly gone underground. FIVE-POINT-FIFTH: Confirmation! YEAH, WE'RE STILL GOING: The TwiMoms have returned, and ready to stroke Steph's ego all over again!

EDIT THE SIXTH: The Washington Post review of BD. Not wanky, just hilarious.

EDIT THE SEVENTH: Smart Bitches, Trashy Books weighs in. Smug Twilighter alert in the comments.

EDIT THE EIGHTH: Twatlympics?

EDIT THE NINTH: The haters draft a petition!

EDIT THE TENTH: You don't know the history of Twilight. Darla Cook does. TEN-POINT-FIVE: And she keeps on going, too.

DOES IT EVER END: Publishers' Weekly article on the protest. They think Twilight's audience consists entirely of teenagers. Ahahaha... ha.

There's now an online petition addressed to Little, Brown etc. Current total is at 64 signatures, although it hasn't been up too long.

Amazon.com forum thread.

The petition.

Waaaay tl;dr for a petition (especially what with the writer describing specifically how s/he would have rewritten Breaking Dawn), but this nugget about Bella's struggle with being a new vampire amused me:

I obviously wasn't hoping she'd go on a killing spree

The writer is clearly missing the greatness of a grand "I EEET JUUUUUUU!" ending to this series...in the same way that Stephenie Meyer missed the boat when she turned Bella all catatonic and zombielike at the beginning of New Moon instead of turning her into an actual zombie.

The petition was initially a letter she was going to send to Little, Brown herself, and it ended up being turned into a petition.

Current count: 91.

LOL at #446 from "Neil Gaiman": This book tarnishes everything, good writing should stand for.

Like the gratuitous abuse of commas?

A real Angelus-style killing spree partway through the book would have made the Sparkledammerüng so much more awesome.

I'm kind of hoping that Nessie will turn out like those genetically engineered thingies in the second Blade movie. Something that eats vampires.
But I'm openly delusional.

Openly delusional >>>>>>> thinking that your poorly written self-insert emo teenage vampires-who-are-not-really-vampires romance novel is the next best thing since Harry Potter.

Oh, good. Cause... geeze, I still can't believe people think this is high literature. I find this wank to be utterly hilarious, and I'm starting to enjoy hearing about the books in the way a person likes watching Mystery Science Theater. Nothing good about the movies but the commentary is great.

Heh, preachin' to the choir here. In fact, this wank drew me out of wanka semi-retirement (I've not frequented these boards in a couple of years, mainly out of lack of time, getting sucked into an RPG (these two items may or may not be related >.>), and having a baby) out of utter thankfulness that there ARE people who see the light when it comes to this series. My sister-in-law bought me Twilight and New Moon for my birthday, saying that this series is OMG SO AMAZING, way better than Harry Potter (not that Harry Potter should be the measuring stick for all literature, but STILL!), etc. She's getting a degree in creative writing and teaches high school English, so I thought I could trust her judgment. YIIIIIIKES. I love her, but...yeah, YIIIIIIIIIIIIKES.

I just don't see why people can't call a spade a spade. Most (non-delusional) people wouldn't even attempt to call a Harlequin novel Great Literature, but if romance is your thang and you want to read something trashy and cheap and easy, then you enjoy them. The Twilight books are essentially the same, so why were they being treated like the Second Coming?!

The upside for me, however, is that I don't feel bad anymore about thinking the books I got for my birthday were utter crap -- they've provided me with so many lulz that they just might be one of the best gifts I've ever received!

Agreed. That's not a petition, it's another whole book about the wrongness of Smeyer's book.

:headdesk:

Every five seconds this fandom does something that makes it seem like the lamest evar, and that's a pretty good trick considering how lame some of the Twilight fandom moves have been.

Question: What is this poster on Amazon referring to?

Cory M. Warren says:
Wow, J.K. Rowling seems incensed with meyers... who can blame her. everytime meyers revels in being the new J.K. Rowling with a selfish arrogant titter and grin from ear to ear, I bet Jo dies a little inside.

Has JKR actually said anything about Smeyer? I want! I want I want I want!

Probably the poster overestimates how much JKR cares about SM.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

"Neil Gaiman" has also signed (he's #446), along with this comment:

This book tarnishes everything, good writing should stand for.

Apparently good writing also stands for extraneous comma use.

One of the posters also mentions the Twilight Sucks Web site, replete with Webcomic parodies.
