The Battle of Versailles
Small wank but some of us need a break from Twilight wank, y/n?

So what happens when an obscure American musician finds out that a Japanese indie band that just might be less obscure has the same name as the one you've already picked. Well if the name is Versailles you copyright the name and threaten legal action against the Japanese band for stealing the name from you. Because you know there's no way that they could have been inspired by the French city the name comes from being as they are a visual kei band that uses the glory days of French aristocratic society as their band's theme.

Needless to say the wank is easy to find from both sides in the US Versailles myspace page.

And wank from JP Versailles can be found a few places like the Last.fm shoutbox for JP Versailles and the Jrock Revolution Versailles board that has their announcement that they will be changing their name so they can continue performing in the U.S.

Would it soothe their sensibilities to know that the Japanese band probably can't say their own name correctly? And that all the merchandise is going to abbreviate them to ベルサイ anyway?

Probably not.

They let her trademark Versailles? Seriously? No, seriously? What, is she gonna sue Ikeda Riyoko now? How about anybody who publishes books on the Palace of Versailles? Or travel guides for France? Or French history? Or hell, world history? Dude, is she planning to sue France itself for its fucking city?

That is so dumb.

Ahhh, so that's what they meant! We were at the live where the (japanese) Versailles announced this to their fans and while I couldn't quite understand the details, the gist arrived. (basically band was "blahblahblah namae blah America blahblah... WE ARE VERSAILLES" and the fans went from "Ehhh? Naniii?" To "YEAH YOU ARE VERSAILLES")

But really, the US artist looks like an ass from where I'm standing, because Kamijo and the gang have had a crush on classic french for a long time.

Changing names for performing in other countries (because of a name conflict) isn't actually all that rare. I've heard of it for at least two other pretty high-profile bands.

The Japanese band could always just drop the 's' and be "Versaille" in the US- prolly good enough.

Also, afaik, trademark isn't like copyright where you have full protection automatically. You have to defend trademark rights, and every instance you don't- every time since this person registered this trademark that Versailles did any kind of business in the US under the name and it wasn't legally challenged, for instance- will weaken any subsequent claim of violation. Anyone? I've learned a great deal about copyright due to the SVA Show, now we can do trademark law!

Fandom Wank, it's like online college in a way. *lol*
