Stargat Atlantis RIP I'm surprised nobody has picked up this wank from Stargate Atlantis has been canceled. Queue the wank from the fans over the announcement which can be found in the comments over at GateWorld and Joe Mallozzi's blog (a writer/executive producer for the series). They include such gems like: RIP Atlantis says: Well, the news is out, and I feel sorry for those who work on the show and those who’ve continued to love it. However, to me, it’s not entirely unexpected. Joe, you in the past year and a half have gone against the very formula that led to SG1 being such a huge success. You didn’t listen to the fans, you actively dumped some fans, and you engaged in stunt casting. Mistake number 1: Cast changes don’t make people happy, especially when popular cast members like Torri Higginson and popular characters like Elizabeth Weir are concerned. Mistake number 2: Just because someone watches SG1 doesn’t mean they’re going to follow Sam Carter to Atlantis. And it certainly doesn’t mean they’re going to stick around when she decides to leave. Mistake number 3: Stunt casting by bringing in a Firefly actor who was popular on that show to play an appalling, laughable, unpopular character on your show is not going to get people watching. I’ve come across a lot of people who started watching SGA because of Jewel, hated the character and tuned out again. Mistake number 4: Assuming that just because someone’s a casual viewer, they don’t care. They care. They care just as much as those who talk about shows online. They maybe don’t have the internet at home (yes, that’s still the case with some people) or don’t have the time.. They do still care though. Mistake number 5: Conflicting information does not make for happy fans. Amanda Tapping telling everyone she was “obliged” to do SGA and you telling everyone she wanted to do it and was given the choice? Really, get your stories straight, because it sounds like at least one person is lying in that situation, possibly two. On the whole, I feel sad that those who love watching and working on this show now have a void to fill, but for me, it ended at the end of season three. I’ll remember the glory days of Shep, Weir, McKay, Beckett, Teyla, Ronon, Caldwell, Zelenka and yes, even Ford. I’m pretending the disaster that involved Keller and Carter never existed. Oh, and just in case you decide this is a little too scathing to unscreen, at least you’ve seen it and can understand why some people lost interest in the show. Mellow Yellow says: Am I high? Did they just cancel SGA? Why???? A Honshuu says: I cannot believe that you knew this was happening and didn’t tell us. Everyone above keeps saying “oh, I’ll cherish what we got”. Well, I think it sucks. Best season yet as far as ratings goes and SciFi dumps it. How stupid are these people?! I’m going to stop watching SciFi as soon as ATLANTIS ends as they’ll no longer have anything worthwhile anymore. I can catch Doctor Who on BBC America… I feel so sorry for Hewlett and Flanigan and the rest of the cast. Never given the chance to be equal to or greater than the Oh-So-Vaunted SG-1. I’m gonna stop, now, before foul language starts seeping in. I await your “commentary” on the cancellation. And of course what fan reaction to the cancelation of a series would be complete without the 'bring back our show' petition, which can be seen here. And now there's even a LJ community dedicated to bringing back Stargate Atlantis. But Stargate fans don't have too much time to come to terms about SGA's cancellation as it is then announced that a new Stargate series has been green-lit for production, Stargate Universe. In the announcement they mention that this series will be geared towards a younger audience and will have a 'young vibe' to it. Not all Stargate fans take to the announcement in good graces, for example: ashanome says: What's next? You take all the long-time, loyal Stargate fans out behind the barn and "put us out of our misery"? Have we gotten too old for ya? What with the watching of ten years of SG1 and five years of Atlantis and all. Thanks for a real nice kick in the teeth. If you don't want the fan loyalty, just say so. If you're bored with Stargate - turn it over to writers and producers who aren't and then move on. It really feels like the more the fans stick by a show, the less respect we get from the folks creating the show. Yeah, kill off a favorite character or two, kill the show. Whatever. Don't you guys realize that you have to have people who are willing to watch these shows in order for them to be successful? And why should the fans keep coming back when (some of) the producers and writers show a distinct lack of respect to the fans? And, yeah, that sound you'll be hearing is me, changing the channel away from SciFi and not watching the new SGU. Ungrateful worms. Sad Fan says: So basically it'll be "ship" on a ship from day one, with lots of teen angst for the kiddies. I'm going to hurl, seriously. And how can there be guest stars from SG1 and SGA if the ship can't contact Earth? RCC is the one who came up with Sam/Pete vs Sam/Jack. Really great at writing believable relationships, yeah. I won't be watching. Goodbye Stargate! smartestpersonever says: "Younger audience" means dumbed down. "Younger audience" means replacing obscure/funny pop-culture references with "reality-tv this" "mobile phone" that. "Younger audience" means betraying the stargate demographic and killing the franchise. Thanks, MGM. You've just destroyed an entire franchise with one terribly-aimed blow. Vera says: Umm... What happened to the 'more mature' Fans, who've dedicated the last 11 years of tv to the Stargate Franchise? Are we being pensioned off, or something? Do I need to go and collect my free bus pass now that i've reached my mid-thirties and no longer hold any vetted interest for Producers and TV Execs alike? The more I hear about it, the less I wanna know SGU. It's the reason for axing my favourite show and is already alienating an entire Fanbase. Mr Wright talks about the Stargate Franchise... Well, we - THE FANS - made that franchise possible. Now, we've been betrayed, disillusioned and told to sod off and make way for a younger audience. Great. And I thought politics in Government were bad enough. Those Cats hold *nothing* to these guys >.> Wraithfodder says: The news of SGU's greenlight, less than 24 hours after killing off SGA, is like someone taking your pet dog, a little long in years, out in the back yard and shooting it, and then giving you a new puppy and telling you "Oh, you're going to love this one." Sorry, but SciFi's/MGm's tact on how to deal with their fan base is nil, zip, nada. While yes, some fans just want to watch a scifi show, there is also a large number of fans who adore the show, even with faults, and are the oens who attend the cons, BUY the merchandise, etc. I've seen lots of people already say online that once SGA concludes its run, they're dumpnig the SciFi Channel. I would, except it's tied in with a package. Apparently the BBC AMerican channel offers better scifi programming than the SciFi channel now. But as for SGU ... a "younger vibe" ? "young and desperate" explorers? Excuse me, but young and retching is more like it. Way to go, guys, just slap down the audience who's stuck with you through thick and thin. We're just too old. Sorry to say, but it seems the actors are too :( But, thanks to all the folks whose comments here (the wittyily sarcastic ones) made me laugh! :) Post a comment in response: |
