Mmmm, Girl Gamer Videogame Wanky Goodness.
So a friend links me to a very nice article: Genderplay: Successes and Failures in Character Designs for Videogames.

The article itself, for the subject matter, is almost completely free of wank. The journalist posts on the bouncy busted girls of DoAXBV or Lara Croft not as being 'bad' or any such thing: She comments that the *marketting* of said games is one that aimed primarially at guys, and this may have robbed them of some players. Never once does she get feminist: She says that most of these games are still fun to play, but because they're aimed mostly at guys, they're not gonna get full audience. Or she says that the inclusion of bizarrely oversexed characters can sometimes ruin the mood they're going for (The jiggly breasts of the barkeep in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance spoiling the horror movie feel, for example, by making the audience laugh).

Cool, I thought. A well thought-out essay on girls in video games that ISN'T scarily feminist. Nice.

And then I scrolled down.

The first few comments (Which I can't link individually, alas) were intelligent or at least agreeable. But soon...

"I'm somewhat tired of people complaining about Phalic objects. Yes a joystick looks like a penis, but would you rather have a controller shaped like a vagina? "

"go play with your dolls. and make me a sandwich!"

"i think many games are for women. for instance, extreme beach volleyball has naked guys in it. so there. "

"YOU WILL ALL BURN IN HELL FOR PLAYING VIDEO GAMES. ALL OF YOU. DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR PATHETIC LITTLE LIVES!!"

Between the guys wanking on how IF it had naked guys she'd be okay, the trolls, and the people trying to dig up details of her personal life to claim she has no right to try to 'desexualize' games (as if that's what she's doing)... I think I need to go wash my face. I can hardly see for all the jism.

EDIT: I meant 'militantly feminist', not 'feminist'. I need more sleep. >_>

Man, if all these people think that was uber-feminist preaching, then they sure as hell wouldn't like this.

I mean... they have a freaking "Marketing Effort Towards Women" category in their review template! Because God knows that I only buy videogames that cater specifically to my needs as an ENLIGHTENED GAMER GRRL.

I must say though, the original article was written in a pretty level-headed manner. I even agreed with many of the points. Too bad they've got a nasty troll infection going on.

Never once does she get feminist

Never once does she regard women as equal to men? Wow. You'd think those posters would've been much more fond of her, in that case.

(Feminist=/=insult. Also =/="crotchety and irrational".)

Sorry, my bad for typing this up after a night with only two hours sleep. I dropped the 'militantly' I'd meant to put before the 'feminist'.

See I wouldn't say a feminist by definition is necessarily looking for equality, per se, or else a masculinist would also be looking for equality. (I think of them as campaigning for women's rights, hence the etymology of the name.)

That said, a majority of feminists today are annoying and I don't want them. A lot refuse to accept things like inherent biological differences in the sexes, and a whole lot of other hoopla.

My mother loves this routine. Interestingly enough, she has not yet drawn the connection between that and my never picking up the phone when she calls. (Hey, it's not my fault she always calls when I'm sleeping or at work.)

My favorite is the one who attempts to lay the smack down on what Tolkien was intending to do with his writing, and misspells "Tolkien" nearly every. damn. time.

Now that's classic.

I liked the article, though. Didn't agree with everything, but as mentioned in the saner comments, it's nice to see a moderate opinion. And now I have to go and listen to some "Metroid" remixes. Rock.

Interesting article. I can say that finding 'strong females,' as she puts it, in what I consider the 'mainly male demographic' area of video games, is uncommon, yes. The developers believe sex sells--as do many other media outlets in society as a whole--and put it that way. Most men (the ones I know, at least) are not afraid of strong women, so it's not some tinhat conspiracy or somesuch, I believe. Just that, yanno, sex sells.

I'm gonna keep this rather short, but, the examples used in this for the example of how females are portrated as sexual objects in video games is a moot point. Take a look at the male models in video games...hate to tell you this but not alot of guys live up to the chiseled hero look either.

This is probably why there are so many pretty boys in games of late, besides the usual 'chiseled hero look.'

Fangirlisms in video games (I'm looking at you, Square) seem to be growing these days. It certainly is in anime--you have 'shounen' anime, series that are drawn for and targeted for boys, suddenly busting out with borderline yaoi and gay S&M stuff (I'm looking at you, Get Backers), and one can only realize that companies are realizing the female demographic in a highly male area. Male eye candy and pretty boy fodder are running a lot more rampant in games than I remember, and we're not even going to talk about Japanese companies jumping on this Rampantly-Running-Wild-Yaoi thing.

Of course, I mainly play console RPGs with the occasional platformer--my last stint with PC gaming was back when Sierra and LucasArts were still making good games--and Square console RPGs are, if nothing else, fangirl fodder.

Back to the point > if you don't like the game, don't buy it, and please don't bitch, because someone else probably likes it.

Uh... I never got the impression she was 'bitching,' really--I found her article to just be an analysis of her views as she played. She wasn't calling every guy who played Tomb Raider a drooling titmonger.

People get defensive at a little bit of criticism, no matter how diplomatically put, don't they?

Actually, from what I'm seeing (and I'm only about a 1/3 down through the comments or so), it seems like the majority of the comments, whether they agree or not, are actually pretty civil--and some have some very interesting points, even if I disagree. I must admit, I'm shocked. My experience with the video game fandom has always made me felt like I ate some very bad cheese.

While it is well thought out one thing women have to think on is you arnt always right even when your hurt by it. .... Personaly I think the real issue is men like to create and look at very interesting LOOKING characters both ugly and not. But women seem to concentrate on the pritties and ignore the uglies and wonder why WE are obsessed with something we arnt.

That just hurts. Please. Stop.

Okay could someone PLEASE give me directions to the TEH GAY in Get Backers? I read up to about volume two with online translations and didn't see one scrap of yaoi. [It didn't help that I found the series rather dull.]

However if this series does have yaoi goodness I want in, or at least a glimpse.

I have some seriously questionable official art from the GB anime that's... uh....... dude. *snickers*

At Anime Expo this year, two of the guests were the director (Kazuhiro Furuhashi) and character designer of Get Backers. I went to their panel (and AX itself, actually ^^;) because Furuhashi-san also directed Hunter x Hunter, but there were several Get Backers questions asked too.

Indeed, the first question at the panel was "Are the Get Backers gay?" There was much amusement on the part of the panelists, and at the end the answer was "Yes! And it's a story about strong male friendship!"

Eh, I watch GB to mock it. ;) It's funny.

To quote er, myself, "But of COURSE their friendships are strong! Strong like chains! And whips! And leather! And whipped cream! And... ooh, whipped cream...."

It's mainly in the anime. The manga isn't quite as blatant as the anime, so if you're really interested in seeing TEH GAY, check out the animation itself (which is actually very nicely done).

Animage even went so far as to post these two pinups in their mag about the GetBackers anime:

First there was this.

Argh, the person who had the second pic took it down, but I managed to find it again, only now it's in two pieces (since it was a full page spread)
left and right.

Then there's Kazuki, the guy who's often mistaken for a woman, and in the second ending of the anime, he's shown in quite the slashy vibe with his 'guardian' Jubei, no, they're not making it obvious, considering there was an episode where the heroes alikened them to a honeymooning couple.

Also in the third 'Mr Devaju' ending, it ends with this little image, which later shifts into a serious look from both of them, as if they just realized that they're this close to kissing, save for Ban's cigarette.

Blahblahblah. I stopped watching the show after a while.

Dude, flashback. I do remember that. I was in my own more wanky phase at the time, though, so my memory is probably warped... The premise didn't bother me, but I remember resenting the insinuation "Wow, now girls have a reason to play games too!"

But then I may not have seen it clearly through all the bile. Wouldn't be the first time. ;)
