For the Spanish-speaking Wankas, the Convention Organizer who dares his "enemies" to work for him
Since just pimping the Fandom Wank in Spanish could be seen as rude, I have to at least bring some of the scarce wank we can compile.

So! To the fun!
Ken Masters (not his real name, but he seems to hate it anyway) is a Venezuelan convention organizer who run Osecon, renamed Shin Osecon since an... unfortunate... installment who went wrong. Ken is well known between Venezuelan otakus for his allegedly greedy ways and his hilarious outbursts, who range from insulting fans of american comics and anyone who doubts his numerous and outrageous claims, to catfighting with the married couple who organize Avalancha (another convention, this one with an trow-all-fandoms-in-it approach but still overloaded with otakus) by three years in row, to defending the most disorganized installments of convention by reclassifing the failures as special features. In FW_es we know the dude very, very well.

So, why I bring the case of an batshit insane man who wanks in a language most of you don't understand?

Because of his latest outburst to date: Daring some of his most outspoken critics to plan some special entretainment for the next installment of his convention, under menace of RL permaban.
That, after comparing his event with the Comiket. In a way that translates "Japanese fans camp from the night before to go into what is basically a stadium filled with small tables of paper vendors and a terrace for the Cosplayers. WHY VENEZUELANS CAN DO THE SAME FOR MY LIL' SHITTY CONVENTION!!!1!11ichi"
Oh, by the way, some of those critics? Ken Himself kicked them out from the latest installment of his convention.
There are short answers to his dare (in the original thread) and some long ones in a couple of blogs (complete with sporking of Ken's OP), but all can be translated in the same statement: "Thanks but no thanks, and by the way, go fuck youlself".
That doesn't forbid Ken from go back to call those refusers "cowards" and some other niceties in all those threads of comments, while doing the butthurt "Nice Guy" number.
This isn't Bit Of Earth, but dear, I never had seen such a kerfurfle around a convention...

The thing was cut short, and is a bit of old by now, but the ones who can read spanish can go and see how Mr Masters lose his temper again, and again, and again, while all the people just laugh at him.

Okay, I am supremely confused by the YouTube link you gave. Why did a rather lame "let's limbo under this police tape!" party game force the con to rename itself?

Not really seeing the funny here...

*joins the confusion* And I can't read the comments to see if they explain any. *is sadly non-lingual outside English and cursing at people.*

I did manage to make out the words "Edward" and "vampiros", but that still doesn't explain things. (And frankly I'm almost afraid to inquire further.)

*squints at comments*
*comments remain inscrutible*

from what I can read, bearing in mind that my Spanish is really rusty, I think the suggestion is that that was the most fun thing to do at the con.

After watching the video and reading the comment here, I think that what happened was that the con was canceled by the cops, and THEN the fans decided to play limbo with the police tape... making it the only memorable thing of the con (Although it would be nice to know why it was canceled by the cops...)

[info]veneotaqueen

To explain: from I was told, the "Police tape" was put to do a physical limit of the area where the con should stay. Unfortunately, since that "con" was little more than a flea market, the space was VERY limited, there was no real activities because the organizers didn't remember they had promised them, and the sound system sucked ass, the only thing people could do to have some amount of fun the was doing the limbo with the Police tape. It was the cherry who topped and big ice cream of Fail.
Summing: that whole installment was a fiasco of such proportions, that the mocking began even before the event ended, and the organizer decided to change the name to imply that the next cons will be all "new and improved". Not that it worked.

Wow. I kind of assumed that was outside the con, not the actual con itself.

I feel a whole new appreciation of that video now. Good grief.

...well, actually, if he dared them to provide entertainment for his event on threat of a permaban, that's blackmail more than a dare per se. >.> Not that it isn't wanky either way...

Translation to Ken Master's OP part 1

2008-10-14 07:38 pm UTC (link)
I spent about an hour and a half translating this and hopefully I got it as accurately as possible. My spanish has rusted over the years but I'm still capable of translating for the most part. My comments are in italicised parenthesis.

--------

A public message to anti-otakus and all fans in general.

I appreciate all the initiatives made in Venezuela...

We've been asking for quite some time now in the osecon team about the flame wars amongst fans, and of apparent ANTI-OTAKUS.

And detractors of the events, ALL included.

Here we put on a video of the most famous event in JAPAN, sip JAPAN. (I have no idea what sip is)

Now is the time to educate fans.

I bought myself a super video from Comiket in August, and I've translated the important parts.

It is 5:30 am and people start running and almost open the subway.
Everything is congested, bus, subway, train, etc.

Everyone goes towards the Big Site Tokyo.

Everyone goes to the comic market = comiket
Here comes more than 12.000 circles of DOUJINSHI (porn, hentai, parody, whatever you call it XD)

Everyone lines up around the small tables and people buy and sell.
To enter you have to make a MAAAAAASSIVE line.

(Interviewed) I come from Hiroshima, I've travelled all night on the bus.

To buy you have to make a MAAAAAAAASSIVE line.

One lady went in to buy a manga that her daughter asked for, and had to look for more than two hours.

On THE BALCONY no less!
The temperature is approximately 40 degrees, and here are people in cosplay putting up with this heat? YES IT GETS VERY HOT. And here are all these people in their cosplay.

You're not going to work today? Asks the armstrong of fma, I didn't ask permission to come.
How much did your cosplay cost?
More than $500 (imagine that.)

At the end, everyone that isn't from Tokyo goes to Akihabara (the market city of Japan XD)

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=CJFwvHXkR9I

At the end of watching the video, we have another

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=wv8FuzRnW4s

What can we see? That the BIGGEST event in Japan are a couple of small tables and cosplays on a balcony.

The people put up with hot and cold weather, they travel or 20 hours just to get there, and make the lines...

And who do we complain to? PEOPLE OPEN YOUR EYES!

Time to thank the initiatives made for the fans in Venezuela,
Here we have major companies that cooperate with us, we don't have any kind of important support on the behalf of the embassy, at most moral support, and we don't have any grand personal qualification.
We only have a group of fans that enjoy making events, having a great time, and we love to see how fans grow.

Translation to Ken Master's OP part 2

From year one to this day, it has become fashionable to criticise these events, overall Osecon. On behalf of 4 to 5 people.
Do the said people in reality support and love the fans?
Are they people who really want this to continue and expand?

Well now is the time to demonstrate it.

An event as heavily criticised as Osecon, gives them the opportunity to demonstrate that you are no more than 4 loudmouthed individuals, if not fans who in reality want for things to change and for that reason you openly criticise.

It gives them the opportunity to organise an activity at Osecon in December, and if we want for things to get better, then lets put up a small arena (I think this is what he meant) for that to occur.

The challenge is to organise an activity that's well programmed, well organised, non-offencive, non-pornographic, not rife with violence, adequate for the entire public, with responsibility in what gets done, with desire, demonstrate what we want to do. The call is on EVERYONE!.
It can be a new activity (100% organised), or one of the already existing ones (collaborated).
To the people who have what is needed to do something apart from insulting people from their computer, we'll give the opportunity to those who don't care about X or Y reason that we'll simply make it clear that they only serve to insult and negatively criticise. Obviously these people will be denied access to future events, and we'll ignore whatever forum on the internet.

Let us demonstrate that we want to move forward in this movement.

Let us learn from the Japanese who go through alot of work just to go to an event made for fans.
Let us come down from the clouds, the events made in Venezuela ultimately have exellent quality compared to whatever other country in the world, including JAPAN.

I say it because I've seen it.

Our events have more activities, we have tabiqueria (I have no idea what this is), we have VARIETY en every stand, we have so many fun activities that you all know.

(Clearly this bloke has never seen a con made in the US. *has met Willow Johnson and almost met Kappei Yamaguchi*)

Let us help grow the fanbase and not destroy it.

Sincerely,
Ken Masters
(Edgardo Palma)

We challenge the following persons.

Starknight (Tulio)
Yagami Raito (Alexander Sousa)
Treize
Nakayima (Deny)
Shigure
Zarafan
Man5on (Rainer)
Christian Krisch (Pirata Cobra)
Toru-kun
Hermes Rivero (Tai kun)

This list is increasing

Lets see if we can realise something that I ridiculed the rest of the activities of the event, or perhaps whoever is left to ridicule...

Thanks, thanks for the translation.
The "Sip" is equivalent to "yup". "Tabiquería"... I don't know the exact term in English, but he refers to those temporary, portable walls used to separate stands in conventions and similar events.

We'd probably call them either 'screens' or 'partitions' in the UK; I assume the USA would, too.

Wow. I might be totally off base here, but I'm guessing anime fandom is completely different in Venezuela than in Japan, due to, you know, cultural differences and all that. If he wants to emulate Japanese cons so much, maybe he ought to just ask Venezuelan "otaku" to just spontaneously become Japanese.

What's with the otaku obsession he has? Last I checked, otaku were creepy basement dwellers who lived with their parents and lacked any sort of social graces whatsoever. Why would anyone want to label themselves something like that?

God, this is like trying to watch Teletubbies sober without a three year old to explain what's going on.

I believe he is one from one generation who genuinely thought "Harmless Anime Fanboy = Otaku", before the negative connotations of the Japanese term were more known in the West.
Although that could explain his IRL attitudes and actions, and why is so proud of claim that there is not "American Shit" in his event. Just thinking.

"Otaku" used to be a regular fandom term for an anime fan. In the U.S., it took on its Japanese connotations fairly recently, probably within the last five years. Maybe South American fandom still uses "otaku" without the negative connotations.

In my case it's less of an ignorance that people used to use otaku positively and more of a "Why do people still insist on being stupid?" thing. Maybe it's because one of my friends was one of the pre-2000 anime webmasters or something, but I always had it drilled into my head that otaku=creepy fuck.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to shake my cane at some kids and tell them to get off of my lawn.

Let's be honest, though - a lot of fans (and not just of anime) are creepy fucks.

(I'm of a similar cane-shaking vintage, so I'm so used to seeing it that I don't even blink. And if PBF had been around in those days, we probably would have called them "weeaboo.")

This is true. I guess I specify because I was warned about otaku right from the get-go since I'd never heard of anime or fandom before. Seriously. Friend went from "This is how you get anime" to "This is yaoi" to "Don't turn into an otaku--this is what they are".

I don't know whether I love my friend for warning me or wonder if she was really paranoid back then. Too bad I haven't seen her in years.

(We totally would.)

I. I am having the oddest sensation right now. You know how people in FW will sometimes know a wanker from RL?

I went to college with this guy for 3 semesters.

AND HE IS THAT MUCH OF A DOUCHEBAG IN REAL LIFE, TOO!

"Why don't you join a gym? I'm in a gym. And I only like really, really, really thin girls."
"...Go away."
"Look at this picture of my current girlfriend. See? THIN."
"GO AWAY."
"IT'S OKAY TO BE JEALOUS."

After he moved to Japan I never thought I'd heard of him again. FW was pretty much the last place I ever imagined I'd learn about how he's doing. This is so surreal. And kind of awesome.
