Opus Ending
Berkeley Breathed's popular comic strip Opus has come to an end. The author had informed the readers through the strip and interviews in Salon, that it will all end with Opus finding his 'final resting place' in November 2. Many speculations were had through those weeks on where the said final resting place will be. (There was even a contest for people to guess it, on BerkeleyBreathed.com. The winner would have $10,000 donated to the animal shelter of their choosing.)

The last page was posted in Salon, the given time. However, the last panel wasn't. The readers were directed to go to www.humanesociety.org/opus in order to view the last panel showing Opus' fate. But they couldn't find it there, either.

People were not pleased

-great, now I want to murder someone at the humane society
I'm guessing Berk's objective was to make people LIKE the humane society, but those guys have really blown it as far as goodwill by failing to put up the final panel. What jerks!

-A shame...
...what ever the ending is to be, he just diminished it.

-Berkeley Breathed Sucks Dick??

Maybe not before, but now he does.

Asshole.

-Ok, enough with the advertising of the Humane Society.

This is the cheapest shot ever-to link to another page to make us wait until whenever you choose to give us the ending.

Ok-that's it. I'm officially done caring.

Opus is gone, long live Opus.

Soon, the panel is up for viewing.

Again, some folks are not pleased:

-I got crap from people who were fans of this limping, soul-crippled series. "How can you? Opus is so cute! He is so wonderful! He's all we've got since Charles Schultz shuffled off this mortal coil! You are a cur!"

And when you guys get a defective link to the final panel...which isn't there...you freak. You go nuts.

I wouldn't spoil the ending of a GOOD comic strip.

Opus ended up as the prisoner in that horrible children's book "Goodnight Moon." The thing you read to terminally ill children just before you kill the respirator.

Now, can we get a GOOD strip in here, please?

-maudlin crap

should have let things end in 1995. have fun writing kids books, berke. your heart's been there for a long, long time.

Berkley later responds in the comments section.

Awww, and I liked Opus!

Fair warning if opening in public place: The link in post was occasionally autoplaying an ad, so might make noise.

I've been waiting for TWENTY TWO MINUTES now

sounds like the x-files movie trailer release fiasco when everyone was counting down til midnight for the trailer to get released and FOX frelled up the official website, because that's what FOX does, and we were all like OMG IT'S 12:13 AND THE TRAILER IS STILL NOT SHOWING I'M GOING TO GO BURN DOWN FOX'S STUDIOS NOW FOR THIS.

It's like these people missed the last 20+ years of Breathed's shenanigans or something.

For some reason, on Saturday's I get both the Saturday paper plus Sunday's section of coupons and the comics. So of course I was quite confused at 9 o'clock Saturday morning wondering why I couldn't view the last panel of Opus. Oh of course, I have to wait until Sunday!

Silly people.

I saw the pastede headline on my RSS feeds that there was wank about the ending before I saw the ending.

Then I saw the Sunday comics and saw that it ended in a website address and thought, "Yup, this is going to be all kinds of wanky, and I don't even know what the ending is."

I still have an Opus plushie (circa 1988 or 1989) and a Opus/Bill "STRESS" coffee mug that's at least 15 years old.

I loved Bloom County. Billy and the Boingers got me through many rough high school days.

(Totally giving away my age here...)

Like the wankers could do a super outrageous perfect ending...yeah. Knock yourselves out.

I think Bloom County was an interesting contrast to Doonesbury... both were highly political cartoons, but as a child, I read and loved BC, and never understood Doonesbury, despite the fact that they were both revolving around subject matter equally over my head.

But talking penguins! What's there to get?

Who/what is Opus?

I mean, I get that it's a webcomic, and maybe the name of its main character as well. But I've never even heard of it until now, yet it seems like this Opus thing/guy is quite famous.

Bwahahahaha! Yeah, that's about it.

I adored Bloom County as a kid, but by the time Breathed started up again with Outland, I couldn't bring myself to get into it. And I had no idea Opus even existed until today. LOL SO LIVING UNDER A ROCK.

Huh! I had no idea that Breathed was still doing his comic strip! I stopped reading the funny pages a few decades ago when comic strips started to suck.

Breathed was actually in my high school art class. I recall that he really admired the work of illustrators Ralph Steadman (the guy who illustrated Hunter S. Thompson's books) and Gerald Scarfe (who created the animated sequences for Pink Floyd's THE WALL, as well as designing the characters for Disney's "Hercules"). Breathed was a funny, talented guy who'd draw goofy caricatures of teachers and made bizarre drawings of crazy pirates. At Christmas, each classroom would decorate the door to their room and one year Breathed drew a large cartoon of the Three Wise Men (one wearing sunglasses) bringing a box of Pampers to baby Jesus. While I've never been a huge fan of his comics, I'm happy that Breathed achieved success in a field he loved.

I thought the Goodnight Moon ending was okay (but a rather vague reference), but I preferred the way that Calvin & Hobbes ended.
